Marijuana 'grow houses' an increasing menace

Oh noes!!! Grow house menace!!!!!!

"When Mikey and Zeina Kostelny found their first home in the suburbs of Altadena, Calif., it appeared to be a buyer's dream, complete with fresh paint, carpet and fixtures.
But that dream quickly dissolved into nightmare after the sale closed in late 2008 as the couple began to discover problems hidden behind its glossy finishes — from mold to gas leaks to bad wiring — all stemming, they believe, from its undisclosed past as a marijuana grow house.
"After we moved in, we smelled fresh paint and then another smell," Zeina Kostelny says. An inspection later revealed dangerous Stachybotrys mold throughout much of the house, forcing them to move and foot the tab for more than $42,000 in remediation and repair. Months later, an electrical fire pushed them into an apartment again.
The tsunami of vacant, bank-owned properties in many parts of the country has helped fuel a surge in indoor marijuana production, turning once-empty homes like the Kostelnys' into high-dollar and high-risk pot farms that spell trouble for prospective buyers and neighbors.

"In the last several years, we've seen a dramatic increase in the number of grow houses," says Covina, Calif., Police Chief Kim Raney, who has overseen several busts. "It's almost a perfect environment, because you have had a housing market that's upside down, people losing their houses to foreclosure and people trying to find ways to make their mortgage," he says."

It's a big article, here's a link to the whole thing.

Meh, I fucked up a townhouse bad one time, so I can't comment.

It's growers like me who ruin it for the rest of us.

I've cut my share of holes, but I haven't ruined a home completely by any means.

LOL, they mean to say:

A blank check for people ripping off insurance companies with scare tactics...$42 grand...40 grand of it probably went to eradicating naturally occurring mold that can't be eradicated due to the fuckin nature of it...

Watch out for the mold people! You know that shit everywhere all around you that you can't see. Wonder what they would do in a rainforest...Can hear them now...

"Well looks like we need a couple billion in federal aid there is mold and bacteria all throughout this national park we will need a lot of diesel fuel for this one Mr. President."

"No problem I will always support your union. Here's 50 billion in tax dollars that we don't have. Don't worry we will take from those that are 5 years old now when they mature enough to work as slaves for the government. Just don't light any fires until we are out of office."

Mold...the new medicare heh.

Moral of the story is PAY FOR A FLIPPIN' HOME INSPECTION. Any inspector worth a damn would have caught most of what these idiots are complaining about. Sloppy pot grows f*ck up houses. So do unmaintained roofs, pipes, heating systems, earthquakes, foundation subsidence, etc. Check the history of the place, do a public records search. For most people this purchase is going to be a big % of your total expenditures. If you don't bother to check into where you're dumping several hundred thousand you are a DUMBASS. Sure you're a "victim" but you're self made.

Pot house 101
A total of 4,666 marijuana grow houses were busted in the U.S. in 2009, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration — just a tiny fraction of the number in operation, experts say.

That sure is a totally amzingly tiny fraction of the total if true , there's prolly that many grow houses in just one county in California now . <gg

What they forget to mention is how many people, just in Calif , prolly have saved their houses from foreclosure with a bit of extra income coming in . Of course there's clean up at the end of any grow which the house prolly needed anyways .

RE: Move over meth: marijuana "grow" houses an increasing menace

Thanks for bringing this new fascist menace from "housing sharks" to my attention -- what a bunch of reactionary sheiss-koffs. Reefer madness paranoia strikes deep, 70+ years later. Perpetuating the propagandist bullshit for a new generation ... there's no way we could have seen That coming ...

Yea you just have to run it away from plants and buds =X I am always scared I will zap my buds with ozn-1 only have it for emergencies. Definitely kills all the mold though...

A family member of mine used to sell ozone machines for houses and businesses when they first hit the scene and I guarantee all the reconstruction and contractor work they bilked the couple/insurance company for could have been avoided and a simple ozone machine on for a couple of days would have worked.

Almost worst than going to a doctor these days...referral mill's are just a fact of life now unfortunately...Almost got oral surgery on my molars if it wasn't for the picture in Webster's dictionary of impacted molars, I would have...4 years later and no problems. Glad I looked at the x-ray and threw away the surgery referral the doctor gave me.

Place a family member worked at had someone die undergoing a routine cath of the heart...turns out they did not even need it and it was the normal medicare rip-off BS and of course the inept government never did anything about it even with the nurses rolling over to the feds...

Careful what anyone tries to sell you...Snake oil is still around in many forms lol.

What got me most about the story was the picture of cops having to wear gas masks to bring the plants out. I mean come on, how can they effectively enforce the laws of the land when clearly they haven't a clue about how the thing they deemed illegal even works?

Another thing I didn't care for was the laundry list of things to watch out for as signs of a grow house. I mean there are so many legitimate things that could create the same signs. Plus it essentially encourages neighbors to start snooping in their neighbors trash and other stupid shit that could ultimately get them killed if it is a gang run operation.

See folks you can't even get a damn grave these days:

CBS Chicago News News: Bodies Stacked 8 Deep At Cemetery

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2011/02/17/disturbing-cemetery-burial-practices-uncovered/

(Remember folks every senior gets called from age 45 on for life insurance sales and the cost of burials/funerals covered by life insurance is so expensive you must convince your grandmother/father to purchase before you foot the bill!) Hey are those coffins mold proof?

LOL mold eradication...meth labs...marijuana grows, raids, oh my! See, your 65k+ a pop (with pension and health care as well) federal government swat team (chief bureaucrat) member, is worth your money! There could have been new born babies exposed!

http://www.simplyhired.com/a/salary/search/q-s.w.a.t.

Gotta love the spin with even associating MJ to meth. This is like an add for swat (more police funding to hire more people/sway public opinion as well) disguised as a news story...

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Do_you_need_a_college_degree_to_become_SWAT

Hmmm...lol. Not saying there is anything wrong with not having a college degree at all (think economics), but with the astronomical amount of money involved with benefits alone, that is a hell of a deal for not even requiring a collegiate degree....

Don't worry they will pay for it if you don't have it and decide you want a degree! After all you are a hero! Saving babies from mold caused by marijuana grows that are = to meth labs.

There is probably an entirely different FAFSA for them...

Sorry I am on a roll...

^it's a drug war, and we are on the losing side Damn, already this year there are over 100,00 cannabis arrest here in the USA.
the term grow house is ammunition for Them, only problem is Jurors know about our sacred buds. Get your degree!

What is fueling a surge in indoor marijuana production is the people's demand for marijuana

and huge profits because of risk factor

I could also add, indoor marijuana, less risk of getting found/stolen (if you follow rules)
better quality also

Actually this story is very similar to what I heard was being put out in Canadian newspapers a few years back filling the public with fear so as to recruit them to help spy on their neighbors for free. All the same threats, mold, electrical fires, chemical hazards from the fertalizers, etc. Even gave the same kind of "signs of a grow house". I don't know about anyone else but as far as I'm concerned nobody that's a serious grower does any of the things they suggest. People coming by a grow? No fucking way. Obviously unusual containers in the trash? Give me a break, I hear growers talk about all sorts of elaborate ways they secretly dispose of trash. Newspaper covering all the windows? Even amateurs know better then to be that obvious about how you're blocking light.

A telling thing in the story was that most grow houses go undetected and/or unreported out of fear of retaliation. So the cops put something like this out there to scare people into helping. Of course home owners are going to do everything in their power to protect their property values.
