Question About Horizontal Root Growth

Hello everyone,

so i have 18 white widdow, skunk #1, and lemon skunk lassies in 5 gal buckets, in blaze1's soil mix, and using his nute tea. They have been under 3200w 24hr light veg for 2.5+ months. they are bIIIg. humongo bushes, 3ft tall just the plant, cant even get close to wrapping your arms around them.

we just flipped the lights to 12/12 a week ago, and are adding an additional 2400w and HPS bulbs this week, bringing it up to 5600w. We have been battling root binding all along, had to make several transplants into larger containers. we want to transplant into 20 gal wheelable bins, they are only a few inches taller than a 5 gal bucket, but obviously much wider.

so my question is will the roots immediately start growing horizontally without any problem? considering they have basically been forced to grow in a vertical manner in all previous containers. i know that plants prefer to spread their roots horizontally, im just not sure if this change will induce stress or result in not being worth the money spent on soil mix and time. i just feel like at 3ft tall going into flower, they will be big big girls. they have been in the 5 gals for probably a month now, and up to this point we have been transplanting about every month b/c it gets root bound.

thoughts?

Shouldn't be doing a 24 hr lights on veg. Read what Spurr posted, it's in his signature.....

roots tend to grow out and then down, i doubt you will stress your plants with the repot but it would have been better to make it a week before you flipped them as root growth slows down during flower - exactly when is strain dependent.
if you are going to repot you should do it sooner rather than later. make sure you water correctly - you have a risk of there being areas of rootless soil which could stay a bit wet.

try and get as much depth of new soil under the root ball as you can.

hey thanks, ya we are popping them into 12 gallon rolling buckets asap. i assume that during the stretch the roots will grow a bit, but after they must slow down as you were saying. i've never had ladies this big, so they just look like they'll never stop spreading their roots haha, which is why we were nervous about binding up in the 5 gallons before they finish.
