where are the laid back hippies living these days?

I have heard that transplants and, errr, less-than-hippy people have overtaken Humboldt County. Heard it's all guns and trucks with guys going huge. No offense if you live there I don't speak authoritatively bout' any of this, just what I heard. Very few hippies left.

Some say Boulder but I spend a ton of time in Boulder, and that ain't so. Being born with 7-10 figures in your account and not working ain't hippy, hehe.

Shit man even Bisbee isn't hippy anymore. Went there a few weeks ago inspired by Doug Stanhope...meh.

Where the hippies at?

Hippies are everywhere. It al comes down to what you call a hippie. I find that most generaly true hippies dont congregate but are spreed out. You can really find them everywhere.

For the record I'm nothing close to being a hippie, I just like the vibe. I guess it depends on how you use the term.

For example I find Nederland Co to be full of hippie-ish types that I love. Everyone in that whole damn town seems happy, or they fake it well and find it important to be extremely nice and friendly.

Growing up in the Midwest around a lot of angry people, I enjoy the contact buzz of happy, friendly neighbors, is all..

You can still find plenty of laid back hippies in beach towns all down the coast of CA. That wouldn't be a bad move anyway right?

Theres a reason you dont see em in this area.. we chase em out.

we dont need more stinky panhandlers and their dogs funking up the front of the grocery store.
New hippies are just a different take on old bums.

"Real" Old-school hippies are low key and in the woods doing their thing being successful productive members of society. I know many old school hippies, they dont like the new generation either.

For example: "Mr.T" just retired from a high position in his company, took a sliver of his savings bought a old motorhome, fixed it up and lives for Burning Man, he's got plenty of cash in the bank, and still sits around bangin the drums, smoking huge bomber joints and playing with the hackey sack..shit his nickname is the doobie fairy (he dresses up like a fairy and gives out doobs at the shows he goes to).even his underwear is tiedye.

Thats hippy to me.

Hippie'ville in these parts is Paia town on the island of Maui. It seems the hippie herd continually migrates westward, and many, without the aid of a Trust Fund, end up getting stranded in Paia or on the Big Island.

Many of the hippies these days are just rich kids seeing the world before they have to start real life, but these are the true Plastic Hippies, as they carry at least one credit card.

It does all depend on the definition of hippie. The old school hippies of the boom generation are getting older, so a new generation of "hippies" start to sprout up. Har Har. See what I did Thar.

I have just recently realized how hippie I actually am. Which is weird, because I am a young guy, and where I live there aren't many hippies in my age range. I am a politically active, long haired (Thanks to heavy metal), environmentally aware Canadian. I grow, and make as much of the food that we eat from the freshest raw materials I can find, and try to recycle as much of it as I can. Reading(Life long avid reader), Art, and Gardening have supplemented my prior hobbies of Music and gaming.

Oh yeah, and I smoke copious amounts of pot. And shower daily, but I do collect rain water.

When people point to bums, and dirtbags and use the term hippie, it isn't accurate.

Hippies generally go against the grain of the establishment, especially when the establishment is taking an oppressive/destructive path doing so. They are generally environmentally aware, politically as well, and seem to be pretty peaceful people.

So if you think we need less peaceful, socially aware, environmentally aware, friendly people about, I think you need to smoke a joint and think about that for a while.

There are always some people who can make the rest look bad. You'd see hippies spitting on soldiers back from Nam, I don't like that. I don't advocate war, but a lot of these soldiers were kids who were screwed into joining up, lied to, you could see it in most of their eyes, the look of someone lied to by their country.

There are hippies every where. Alot of them have just changed. I'd say I have a good 5-10 friends off the top of my head, who don't dress like traditional hippies(Nor do I), who have short hair, and dress in Khakis and polos who by every other aspect of hippiness are just as much a hippie as anyone. They may not call themselves hippies, but they are.

A funny story about a few of them actually, 3 good friends of mine are trying to start up a semi community green house company, for a few bucks(They have to charge a small fee to keep the place open, and the bank wouldn't finance otherwise) you can rent and tend to a plot of soil in a large green house like place(Alot of city dwellers here with no where to garden), for a couple bucks more, they'll grow that plot for you if you are busy, but you still get to choose what you plant and get to keep what grows. They are all former Account managers, and so when going to pitch their plan to the bank were all dressed to the nines in power suits. After the pitch they had a small gathering to celebrate. When I arrived, I saw three grown men, in suits, lying in the patch of dirt in one's back yard looking up at the bottom of a heirloom tomato plant they were breeding, talking excitedly, while passing one of the tomatoes around to eat.

It was just such a bizarre display of assumed opposites, in such a positive way.
