harvesting RAIN in colorado is illegal.

It goes to show that, it is actually worse than we think. AND THEY ARE OUT TO GET US. FUCK! WHAT TO DO NOW???? ARRRRRRGHHHHH!!!!!!!
What about pissing in the creek. Aint that rain? Nothing like a golden shower. If thats what you prefer.

As a UK'er, i read this and my reaction was "only in america"

The legal system, and the way it is manipulated is a joke, and some of the stupidest things I have ever heard have come from US legal "authority"

I don't mean that to be insulting, just thought i'd give an outsider's viewpoint. In the UK we are being ENCOURAGED regularly to collect and use rainwater for such purposes.

The UK has its own fair share of stupidity too, we all do. In this and many issues it is time for real americans, people with the tough common sense that won a continent and turned it into the most powerful nation on earth to stand up and be counted(and people from and in other countries with such stupidity). Trouble is, if the situation is anything like it is here, everyone is scared to stick their neck out lest it be chopped by "authority" who want to turn us into obedient, scared, automaton tax farms for them to bleed dry so they can waste more money on pointless shit and people who do not deserve it.

I know it's an old thread but maybe I can piss some new people off. Bumpity Bump. Anyway, the part I don't get is how she's "stealing" the water from the aquifer or stream or whatever if she was going to put in in her garden. Know what I mean?

If I "collect" 55 gallons of water instead of letting it just fall to the ground, but then I dump that 55 gallons in my garden, am I not "giving the water back" to the river, aquifer, etc.??? What a bunch of shit. My Environmental Bio teacher always told us to "stay the hell out of Colorado, there's no water there." I always thought he was being goofy but I guess he was right.

Unless the snow capped mountains have been removed along with the Colorado river, I have to say he is full of shit.
Colorado's water is the only reason southern California can survive.

I believe he was just referring to the fact that it is the start of the North American Rain Shadow and that they, as shown in this thread, certainly do have problems with a lack of water in that state. As the population of that great state continues to climb this will only become a bigger and bigger issue.

this is bad.
goofy! when i put out a 55gal. drum at the beginning of december and at new years have half a barrel of rain collected in it, i fail to comprehend colorados' law.
when i lived in vegas they were trying to wrangle water from surrounding counties, there wasn't even enough of an allottment from the water the colorado river provided to support that town. Charleston aquifer depleted, Lincoln and White Pine counties getting swindled...

fast forward to today, PNW. there is so much rain here that there are springs popping up around the yard, i want to collect it but why?

When i read the opening post i though it was a wind up , then i began to realise that there really are a heck of a lot of fuckwits in charge with their heads so far up their arses the ears have turned brown .
What next ? make claims of ownership of the sun because somebody was first to put in solar panels , or maybe the wind coz someone has already erected a wind turbine , & if the wind is claimed will they accept a good fart from anywhere belongs to them ?
If i lived in Colorado they could go kiss my hairy arse .

Colorado should embrace rainwater harvesting. The legal fiction that all rain is tributary to a stream should be abandoned. Others should not be allowed to own the rain that falls on your roof before you can use it for reasonable domestic uses.
A lot of good common sense here , pity those in charge are so far behind in the brain cell quota .

I noticed that there was no time line for when the law took effect. In the wast the huge majority of water rights laws and actions were done in the 1860's to the early 1900's. So there were no facists or nazis or what ever,it was mainly done by the big cattle companies many of which were owned by absentee landlords that were European so lets get a few facts and the correct historical perspective on the name calling.

If everyone starts collecting all the rain water they can it will impact stream levels and wildlife. I could see needing a regulation if the majority of the people in the state were doing it especially in an arid land already.

^^^ whaaat i bet u the area of peoples roofs compared to land is less than .01%, think it would really matter?

How far do you think rain water from a roof would travel before it was totally absorbed by arid ground & evaporation ?
I doubt it would get much further than a couple of 100yds therefore if your out in the sticks far from any creeks/river or possible water tables (do they exist there?) your collection of rainwater will not harm any water courses . It`s simple science & common sense .

No... why would you collect more than you need for watering? Most people will not have more than a few barrels for their gardens.

This law is for water rights and drainages etc to be divided up but is based of a faulty premise... that everywhere is a drainage that flows to the sea which is not the case. Restricted basins exist on a geological scale and have throughout earth history and simple puddles in bare rock are an example of a restricted basin on a small scale which would never reach the sea.

Also a significant portion will not infiltrate to become groundwater, you cant sue for infringement of water rights for planting trees etc.

Sorry everyone, I'm really not surprised at all.

The direction humanity is headed toward is just disgusting. I don't think anything will truly change until the meteors come raining down.

Wherever there is power to be had, there is a greedy fuck smirking in the shadows just waiting to exploit us.

Wish I could go live self sufficiently on my own land, but my health is fucked, and I'll be broke, miserable and in pain until I die. It's too bad the one medicine/plant that actually helps me is ILLEGAL.

Oh well, what can you do...
