I figured i would move my hydro thread to the micro forum since apparently the people in the hydro forums dont know how to talk or something. posting pics and asking questions, not a single goddamn reply in almost a month.

ill copy and paste the thread over.

Hey sup guys i decided to go hydro DWC for this run. this is my first real time doing it, the last try i didnt get my nutes and have a good setup so i had to cancel and go back to soil. But now i got a cab thats been through a few runs, got the whole system worked out minus a new light i plan to add later. I got a clone in there revegging, and i got 4 seedlings in dirt im gonna transfer to hydro. I read in another thread somewhere that you dont want anything organic in the water right? its gonna breed bacteria? so i was able to wash most of the dirt off the roots but there were some that had tiny clumps of i think maybe peat or some coco lumps on that the roots had grown through. its prolly gonna be stressful enough transplanting from soil to hydro and i didnt wanna add any more by riping roots on a week old seedling. so just how much will the little clumps of stuff on the roots affect it? i cut up a rockwool cube into tiny little pieces and lined the bottom of the netcup with them so that the roots could grown through the spaces between the cubes and down to the res. was this necessary? and also will the little cubes at the bottom being wet effect the roots from growing down into the water? this is my fastest growing biggest seedling and i dont want to lose it so any help and advice is appreciated.

it should be ok but why didnt you just use jiffy pellets or r/w cubes to pop your beans in good luck anyway EASY

i decided to switch to a hydro grow last second, i had already started 3 seeds in soil ,i usually start em in cubes but this time i decided to get old fashioned and just throw em in dirt, survival of the fittest whatever comes up lives. and 2 more in rockwool and 2 clones in rockwool. i usually transplant the rw cube to soil but since i had all these rocks and some netpots and a pump was $15 away i said fuck it ill do the clones and maybe the 2 seeds in rw in a dwc alongside the soil plants. but then one of my clones died when the cube dried out and the 2 seeds didnt make it. on top of that of the 3 seeds i started in soil at first 2 didnt pop the first time around so i planted 2 more and only one of those came up so i popped one more that didnt come up. so then the one that started first grew really stretchy cuz i threw it in the cab which is still on 11/13 with a 90%-100% sativa so i took the dirt from one of the cups that didnt sprout and dumped it on top of the tall one to support the stem. then the other cup that hadnt sprouted finally came up and the same day i noticed that there was a second one in the tall plant cup too. i put em all(4) in soil and the 1 clone left went in the dwc. a small shoebox container or something it had room it looked for 6 3inch cups so i cut out 6 holes and covered 4 and put the at the time 2 clones in the last 2 open holes. but now i see i wont have room for soil plants and a res in my cab so now im gonna transfer the seedlings to the dwc before the roots get too long to remove them from the dirt easily. whew! and thats why i didnt start em in rw.

i thought that was why lol
cheers EASY

i transplanted the rest of my seedlings from the soil to hydro. 1 i cut the bottom of the cup off and left it in the dirt then i put that cup in a netpot lined with rockwool so the dirt cant escape into the res. 2 more i washed the dirt off the roots and put in netcups with little rwcubes i chopped up. the last one i decided to put in the netcup with rocks for support. that one died. i didnt put it in a section of the res with enough water bubbling up to keep the rocks moist. that was my mistake. i will need a better pump or more airstones or some shit. i thought that 2 air-bars? wands? would be enough for a small tub. its like 6 inches tall 14 inches wide and 6 more inches deep. the rest are still alive, i might lose the big one i was afraid of losing. the leaves are showing overwatering and the roots havent grown through the rockwool yet. im gonna move it to the end where the one seedling dried out the moisture in the cubes should keep it going till the roots grow through even if the water isnt splashing high enough to hit the bottom of the cup.

alright things are coming along, i have roots down to the water on 3 of the 4 remaining plants. the 4th one has roots growing out and heading down now. i checked the PH the other day with a liquid dropper kit and it says my ph is like above 8. yowza. either thats wrong or my plants are really tough. they arent dying or anything the only one yellowing is the one with roots that havent reached the water yet. imma take a quick picture so you all can tell me if you notice anything.

from left to right back row.
first one i transplanted from soil., the middle one is the one i left in the soil and just let the roots grow down instead, i got the idea from a houseplant i took outside last summer and was in a regular pot and another ceramic pot under it with no drainage. the soil pot was bone dry and i was surprised that the plant was still alive. i took the top pot out of the ceramic pot and the roots had grown down out of the soil into the ceramic pot which was filled with water and keeping the plant alive. next on the far right back row is the clone that lived. throwing single pladed leaves that are covered in trichomes and still making buds under 24/7 light. like my last clones, i think it has to do with when you took the clones. this one is from a flowering plant. the last one foreground mid is the surprise seed that popped up in the cup with the other one.

oh man that soil container experiment paid off in spades. fuckin ridiculous the roots have EXPLODED literally overnight. when i posted 2 days ago i had 1 little tiny root end poking out of the rockwool. 2 days later there are like 15-20 branches sticking out and reaching a foot in length. and the leaves have doubled in size. im gonna need to redesign my lighting tonight but i cant figure out how im going to mount my lights. any suggestions?
picture.php

anyone got any ideas how i can support this against a plastic rubbermaid lid? i salvaged these sockets from old lamps.

-01-18-2011-
roots are exploding, i fixed the ph to a lower number this time around with the res change. before it was in the high numbers over 7. that was about 2 days ago, havent noticed any explosive growth yet. im gonna finally finish adding lights no one replied when i asked how to mount those sockets the other day, i think maybe i can use zipties in a creative fashion.

i chopped my sativa down so its flower time. i recovered from last week, i guess my ph was too high, i fixed it and the plants have bounced back in the 5 days since i changed the res.

How come everyone is always going on about how fast everything goes in hydro? it doesnt really appear to be much faster than growing in soil. the plants get bigger from the unrestricted root zone. but faster? not so much. took like a week for the deficiencies to come on and like 3-4 days to show signs of improvement once i fixed the conditions. hardly "could come on in hours" as everyone always claims when they are trying to warn us n00bs about growing in hydro vs soil. shit i was thinking i would have to check the plants every couple hours to make sure everything was good.
my pH was around 7-8 for the first week and a half before i noticed anything was wrong and decided to pH the water because apparently GH doesnt come back to 6.4 when you have hard water like we do here in the winter time lol.
anyway things finally back on track took 3 days to see any improvement after i fixed the pH, i also see 6 holes and 6 netpots was a bit ambitious that one Misha is stretching all over the other plants and its just 3 weeks old.

this is the beginning of the 5th week from seed.

everything is coming along finely, ive flipped to 12/12 today they were on 16/8 for close to a week to acclimate to the change from cfl to hps and to make sure they didn't stretch out of control.
nothing much to report on, the big one in the middle is like 3x larger than everything else, i dont know what it is, i dont know for sure what any of em are except the clone which was a bagseed i brought back from my last trip to florida and its mostly 100% sativa, just finished up a run in soil and got a lot of budsites, but was plagued with mites during the first month of flower. hope it does better this time. the other 3 are mishaxkush should be. the big one certainly looks like it.

beginning of week 6, tomorrow, snowed in so why not update my log/thread.
everything is humming along, i prolly shoulda flipped flower sooner the clone has started to grow out 3 now 5 and 7 fingered leaves meaning its gonna have to go back to flower again meaning streeeeetch. i know how this one stretches so im gonna start topping if it gets out of control. so far its still fairly short.

i have a BIG problem, that plant in the middle. looks like its prolly the MF3xKush gotten out of control on me, it has gone from worrying me that it wouldnt make it to taking over the whole box in just 3 weeks. i tuck the leaves for now, but its so big and the fanleaves are so large im gonna have to eventually cut it way back or get rid of 1 or 2 of the other plants. like seriously the fanleaves are the size of a dvd and the stems are long enough that it shades everything else.

one of the plants that i thought was deficient must be the offspring from the misha i ran 2 grows ago and crossed with a strange male i called blu since it was displaying the characteristic blueberry mutations and smelled of fruity berries. it started off purple and has continued being purple on all the leaf stems and the main stem up to the top node or 2 where it starts out green. the leaves on the lower half of the plant are all deformed and swollen like leaves of cabbage, but as it gets mature the leaves look like typical growth.

the last plant is looking stereotypical of the F1 misha and is coming along slowly, this one is most likely a girl, the girl misha are usually always slow and the big fast ones usually turn out male :( too bad that big one looks great.

see ya next week. hopefully i will have figured out how to add thumbnails by then and not just full sized.

I know nothing about hydro setups, but I'll be glad to follow along. I gather that in a DWC type setup the plant is top fed until the roots hit the solution in the bottom, is that correct?

Your babies do look to need something but I am definitely not the one to try and tell you what. Hopefully someone else will look in and give you a hand. If the problem persists you might try the infirmary section. All the best to you with your grow.

....oops just realized you hadnt finished putting up pictures when I began to type. It looks like you have it under control.

you should have more roots. seems like you have some EC or PH problems. The water color should be pink with the common hydro nutes, what are you using and how much?

Welcome brotha.
The one in the middle is a beast. You better find a new home for it, or give it a serious haircut.

It's all in the pH, EC and water quality.

Try dragging your thumbnails to the post instead of clicking. Clicking links to the big pic, dragging doesn't.

EDIT - I just read your post again, sorry I didn't read well enough. It may depend on your IC settings.

Good job DB. I thought of the same thing and came back to find you nailed it.
What's the pH and EC in that tub?

hey guys thanks for stopping in, 1 hour and already more replies than 3 weeks in the hydro forum.

Ive just been using tapwater and lucas formula adjusted a bit to 3/4 :1 instead of 8/16 im using 6/12. i mised the nutes up the first time and i didnt ph it because the water in the city is always right around 7 and when i add the gh it goes to 6.5 dead even like it says on the bottle. but most of my grows are in the summer and i didnt know water gets harder in wintertime lol. so i start noticing slow growth and def then i ph the res and its like 8+ i ph the tap water and it was over 8.5-9. yikes. anyway i fixed that and the ph was like mid 5 - mid 6 (using the drops) and for the last 2-3 weeks its been about that till the other day when i checked again, it had risen to about 7 so i dropped it back to like 5. i need to add another gallon of water today and i figured since this will be the total volume of the res added back with this gallon i would mix in some nutes. im gonna go to 4/16 cuz i have a sativa in there that wont ever finish with too much nitrogen plus the misha's dont use much N.

as for ec i have no fucking clue, i cant afford that right now, im just going by what the plants tell me. i know it would have been easier to go from clone, but this was a last second decision to go hydro and i gotta deal. 3 plants left and 1 res to balance them all. i read a lot of stuff since i started doing the hydro, and from what i can gather (from freezerboy mostly and others) the ph should go down if they are taking more water and leaving the salts behind which sounds logical and means they are taking up more water than food. if the opposite happens, ph goes up, it means they are eating up the foods and leaving behind the water, or at least leaving behind the bigger solids (i dont know the correct term) calciums and magnesium and the other minerals that make the water hard.

so i figured i could get by with just ph'ing the water and watching the plants. so far its working ok. could be better no doubt.

*edit* looks like its a chrome thing. works fine in firefox.

it was a male :( i chopped it back a lot gonna let it live there a few more days till its close to dropping some pollen then imma chop it and collect the sperm. sounds so cold and cruel doesnt it.

how you all can see the pics cuz all it shows is the links for me.

this is a little of whats left of the sativa from last grow. small under developed buds, very airy and wispy. lots of leaf, i didnt even bother manicuring. but the high is craaazy. first you feel a chill thats how you know you are high, every single time. not really much cough goes on, but always the shiver brrr. after that you dont really feel that high, its a creeper comes on strong after like 10 minutes, the first 10 minutes you realize you're high but its all head and very mellow. after that 10 minute mark its like all of a sudden you realize, now im high, before i was high but now im High. the next 2-3 hours are a blur i found myself sitting and staring at the screen for an hour yesterday just lost in thought, i looked at the clock 1:30 amd, im all like lol i got fuckin class in a few hours. i took another hit and decide its time to go to bed. 3:30 amd lol why am i still awake?

its great daytime smoke, im glad i cloned it, im gonna grow it out proper this time. less N and more dark 14 - 16 hours dark and hopefully it wont take longer. this that you see is the result of 23 weeks of 12/12, took 5 weeks and dropping the light to 11/13 to even start the flowering.

this shits like drinking a pot of coffee or being on adderall. very very very up. fuckin made my eyes red like i hadnt slept in days. like seriously, when i havent had a good nights sleep theres a line of red horizontal across my eyeballs like i slept with my eyes open, thats how i looked when i looked at myself after i had smoked some of this.

high only lasts like an hour and a half or so at full intensity, you can feel the mild highness of it for several hours, but to get that peak you need to smoke more. and it doesnt make you sleepy right away, you can smoke a bunch at night at once and it will make you sleep, but if you smoke during the day it wont make you tired, it does the opposite. but it will eventually catch up and you will be comatose once you do go to sleep. took a bong hit the other morning when i woke up and didnt have anything to do, i lay back down and dozed off. woke up and it was 9pm...wtf...

Try to keep the pH between 5.5 to 6.2. The wild swings in pH can't be good. I find my pH will rise within the first few hours of bubbling before it becomes steady.
You can get by without an EC meter running lucas if you replace your res every week. Topping off using nutes without knowing your nute concentration is a recipe for disaster.

i was just gonna add more nutes after i add back the original volume of nutes with plain water. surely they used some nutes in all that time. but i can just mix up fresh nutes its only 3 gallons. but i thought the plants would only take what they needed in hydro and the danger all comes from the ph?

You're plants might not absorb the same combination of nutes available in the res. Adding back (may) cause an imbalance. It doesn't mean you can't top off but you'll gain experience from what works vs what doesn't.

Yeh ph is your main issue I think and the water quality of your tap. Those are huge rocks for a medium, which is probably letting in alot of air to the immmediate roots and drying them out a little which is causing all the "roperoots"..I'd kinda backfill some of the gaps with smaller rocks or hydroton if you have it, and put a cover over the top too to keep in humidity which will help to grow the finer roots due to the higher humidity ( I learned this from aerohead) .

your formula seems right ..running the 6/12 or adjusting slightly for lower N. The PH is key though 5.5-6.2 is ok but I run mine at 5.9.

..and on the larger plant with the fans, it's up to you if you want to defoliate a little and let the smaller plants get more light. Or you can just let the big one continue to dominate.

might want to foiltape the rez lid too if you have some..try to keep as much light as possible out.

with 3 gallon rez I think you'd be fine to top off for a week, then just switch out for a new mix.

You're doing great for your first time in hydro and the major lack of advice for so long. Just dial it in and you'll see why people say it's so much faster ;)

well i took the big misha, and the blu out cuz they were both male, i should prolly collect pollen from them but im too sad, got 1 long flowering sativa left and the other misha which is primarily sativa also but i crossed em to finish in like 50-60 days. but still i wanted at least 3-4 in the cab and its too late to start more seeds in order to be done by the end of april. i suppose i could clone the 2 in there and just let em root straight into 12/12.

gonna change the res out so i can wash the tub and get rid of those bits of root that came off when i took the big plant out. been gettin a lot of males lately smh. used to be i would have 75%+ females. last 2 grows ive had 1-2 girls out of 6 seeds planted each time. thats 3/12 and im not even sure this last one will be a girl. im thinking if i do pop more seeds im gonna do some sasha.
