1 week veg for 8 week flower SOG - 1 or 2 gallon pots?

I know I will probably get answers all across the board here but I am curious as to what you guys/gals suggest and why? I am just going to buy bags most likely so price doesn't matter, using half the amount of medium for 1gal compared to 2gal is a bit appealing though. Medium will be Happy Frog + 25% perlite with a small layer of hydroton at the bottom. Fed lightly and flushed in week 2 then fed around 1200-1400ppm until day 45 and harvested day 55-58. Clones start out large, around 8-9" with nice thick 4-5mm stems. Much like 'Al B. Fuct'. I would be going straight to flower but the clones weren't 100% healthy and I would rather play it safe, hence why I question to use 2gals or not. Doing 25 LUI and 25 Sensi Star Ogre pheno in 6x6 with 2kw cooltubes, each strain with their own lamp. Bottom 1/3 will be chopped on day 7 and 21 for the LUI but I don't think the Ogre responds well to that from past SOGs since it has less stretch, we will see.

Thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

THANKS!

id go with 1 gallon pots if your only doing 1 week veg 2 gallons will be a waste i did a grow before in 1 litre pots no veg fitted 100 pots under a 600w and pulled about 7 to 10g a plant decent results but was a pain watering

I have never seen happy frog, is the hydrotron for drainage or just to keep medium leaking out? Leca isn't great for drainage, coarse perlite or even a think layer of rockwool at the bottom of the pots works much better from my experience. If your mix has enough perlite/etc in it however you shouldn't even need that.

I really have no idea on the behavior of your cultivar under those particular feed/temp/medium conditions, if it's really explosive in growth you may want to go with the 2 gallon pots, otherwise I would probably stick with the 1 gallon.

You haven't said how you'll be watering? That would be a big factor for me. If it was hand watering I'd go for the larger size, if I had it set up on an automatic system like blumat I would probably just stick with 1 gallon pots.

always - I guess you had to water daily? I was kind of hoping I would only need to water every other day with maybe every day in the last half of flower. I was considering not adding the extra perlite (it has perlite in it) to increase duration between watering. Pretty good #s though for 600w good job man.

geo - I will be hand watering, the layer of hydroton is just enough to cover the holes, 1/4"? Have done it without the hydroton just fine as well and may skip it again. Currently hand watering 20 3 gals every other day so I don't see 50 1 gals being too much more work but I haven't done it yet so I can't truly say lol.

yeah i had to water daily with that grow halfway through a made a tub out off pond liner so i could bottom feed made it alot easier ive grown 3ft plants in 1 gallon pots and yeilded about 2oz a plant in a semi sog style and they only needed watering every other day

I've done SOG before and the biggest problems were watering and the fact that I started out by throwing them into flower as soon as they were rooted. My clones were also only 4-5 in. A week will make a difference in your height and overall yield. For watering, you could create a wick system and set the girls in a tray that was deep enough where you could water the tray and allow them to soak it up. It's easier to water smaller amounts more often to help keep the humidity from getting to high, mold etc. I would use the 1 gal bags for sure. It will allow you to have a more dense canopy imho. Good luck-CJ

kstampy, even though your clones are tall I would still go with the one gallon pots. If they are only going to veg for a week they will never develop enough of a root system to make a 2 gallon pot worth your while. Even though you are now watering 20 pots, I can assure you upping the number to 50, even with smaller pot sizes, is probably going to be more work than you think. With the extra work you probably want to keep the load of each plant to a minimum.

me and a buddy do 50 1g's under 2x400 hand watered

only do this because of height restrictions, takes about 1 1/2 hours to water/move all 50, both of us working together.

we veg clones for 1-2 weeks until they settled nice, then flip. 10 g's each, give or take depending strain. I think we did like 600 g's last time. 50 plants.

So I would say use 1g's if you dont mind working a little. but they stay small so easy to move.

i would always go for the 2g..

-first because the rootsystem in a 1g is not comparably performant.
-second, watering is a lot more work,
-third, if you use good soil and really veg only 1 week there is plenty nutrition, so you feed less (i hope organic) ferts.

>"If they are only going to veg for a week they will never develop enough of a root system to make a 2 gallon pot worth your while."<

Thats simply not true. within the first two weeks of flower root growth is still massive (almost not strain dependent). the 2 gal will be fully rooted without the ladies being rootbound..

i havent done a comparison, but i bet you get more if you keep them sog style in 2 gal using the same square..

just my opinion :)
good luck

Thanks for your opinions everyone, +rep for all decent input. I will be feeding with Canna A+B and some times cal-mag with PK 13-14 during week 3 and 6. I will try true organic soil for 'water only' when I can do outdoors.
