So I have 8 3gallon smart pots full of royal gold coco, they have been sorta full on vegging for 2 weeks or so now because I had some problems with contamed coco had to flush it 2 times.

Anyway I was wonderin how big can they get in smartpots of coco? What would be overkill?

And what size pot should I have for 5 foot trees?

They all are around a foot now and I'm sure the coco is engulfed in roots but I'm seeing minimal roots poking out of the pots so I'm wondering if I can let em go another few weeks in there?

ask poopyteabags I have seen him grow monsters in small coco pots. I am not experienced but from what I have seen I would say 3gallons you can go VERY large, don't think it would be a concern.

comfortably 5 foot tree, go with 5 gallons. Less watering, less worrying, more of a stable foundation etc..

u can prob grow a 5 foot tree in a 3 gallon easy. people get 5 foot out of soil in a 3 gallon.

my iced grapefruit stretched more than expected to about 3ft in a two gallon sp and is super happy with a dripper. ninja pointed out a small prob with the foundation... they can get a bit top heavy :) 3 gal with good veg/transplanting would be perfect IMO with a bit of support

Thanks for the instant reply PK,that's really good to know and makes me breath a little easier now.

So I have 4 lvpk in rdwc and they still need bout 5-6 weeks of veg you think the smartpots will be ok vegging for that much longer without transplanting?

I heart ICMAG!!

so I'll maybe wanna grab some 5 galon smartpots and burry the 3 gallon half way in the 5 gallon for stability?

I would transplant anything medium based for 4-6 weeks veg, but let me tell you 4 weeks max for RDWC veg for even the slowest strains

Lol I want trees!!! Possibly scrogged at the top.

you might be better off doing vertical bulbs around the trees and scrog the sides. an HPS/MH can only penetrate so far down...
from my own experience... even the 5 gallon pots will topple down in late flower. you will need support (such as a scrog). you can grow 8 ounce trees in 5 gallon smart pots with not too many problems.

Oh yah man I've flowered 1/2 lb trees in 3 gallon pots. Now I use 5 and 7 gallon to flower and wow it really made a big difference.

So what are you getting yield wise with the 5-7gallon SP?

I think I'm still fuckin up cuz its been almost 2 months and theyr barely a foot tall but the coco is packed with roots, maybe my watering is still off, should I be seeing run off? If so how much run off should I be seeing?

Yes every watering you should see run off (organic nutrients or watering with low strength nutes I have seen people who don't but never impressed with the progress). I go 10 to 25% run off per amount watered. But that is totally eye balling it. I like to go around water everything thing quickly, come back water some more until I see water coming out of the bottom then add a tiny bit more. Never have EC problems or build up of nutrients. Things I see people do that really slows down growth is ya watering is off either over or under watering. Usually in coco it is underwatering. Second is environment.

You should always have runoff. Next feeding check the ppm of your runoff. Flush it if it's to high.

I like a foot of height per gallon of soil, anything more and you will see diminshed results. Put another way, yes you can grow a 5-footer in a 3 gallon, but a 5-footer in a 5 gallon will almost certainly yield more. I've done side by side grows to confirm this as well.

hmm. i was just wondering if i should upgrade from 3.5gal to 5, since i see them pretty rootbound by finish. ..

oh, and your answer to salt buildup is dripclean. It bonds to the salts so you no longer need to have run off every water. I still water to runoff at least 1x during veg and 1x during bloom.

I try to get 1/2lb plants any thing else is bonus. Thats in a 5-7 gallon pot. If the pots are any larger then that I like to reach a full 1lb thats like a 10-15 gallon pot. That requires atleast 2-3 month veg then flower a giant tree!

Im still undecided on pot size. I running 4fters in 3g smart pots now. Im about to drop down to 2g.

I use blumats with drip clean and dont water to run off. This has been the best system for me over everything else Ive tried.

Check your feed PPM compare it to your runoff,if you have been feeding without runoff I'm guessing you will peg your meter
