how many watts can i run in

as long as u g=have good fan u should be able to do 400 to 600w, ill be doing 250-400w my self in a place about the same size

than u should be able to run the 2 400. just make sure u have proper vent to pull the heat XD dont wanna cook the girls....

I don't want to thread jack but I also don't feel this is worthy of it's own thread. OP, you can tell me to delete my post I'd you don't want it in here.

If the cab was ~1.9ft D * 3ft W * 3.5ft H, would a 400w HPS with intake/exhaust ducting and a 240cfm fan be ok? The cabinet will be vented with 80cfm fan and scrubber, fan will be improved if it can't cut the mustard. I estimate about 32in from top of pot to the bottom of the lamp hood. I assume it will be just fine, but I'm curious on what others think.

A good rule of thumb to go by is a minimum of 50w's/sqft. About 100w's/sqft is starting to push the limit, but the more watts you use, the more heat you will have to contend with. Shoot for somewhere around 60-75w's/sqft and you can always go up from there later on, as you choose.

I think you should look at lumen's instead of watts, no? I'm not discouraging the use of 2x400w's at all, you'll be getting about 11,111lumen/sqft, which seems great to me. If I recall correctly the sun is around 10,000lumen/sqft. Sounds good to me, if you can manage the heat. I've been looking at Panasonic's WhisperLine inline duct fans, they seem reasonable and cheapish from Westside Wholesale. But not exactly small.

Anyone want to comment on CFM for a duct fan vs watt of HPS light?

Wow, thanks for that link. I searched a bit and couldn't come up with that. Its saying I really don't need that many CFM.. I hope the exhaust fan I selected can run at a low enough speed. I guess if not, I can send it back and get a smaller unit..

I would cap it at 600w for that space, imo.

EDIT: oh, if 800 gives you 88w/sqft. Its more than I would run without CO2, but its not as bad as 100.

Lumens are for humans. PAR (photosynthetically active radiation) is for plants.

When a bulb advertises how many lumens it has, that is just telling you how bright it will look to you, not your plants.

And I used to cool (x2) 600w HPS bulbs with (x1) 480CFM fan.

look at the size of my space and im using a 400w hps and cooling it with a normal 120mm pc fan, and the temperature is never over 25c :) i had a 150w 3K MH & a 150w CMH and they were harder to cool than the 400w, i just wish i used the 400w from the early days.....
