A perfect cure every time

I used to do 1/2 of a grow with a 7 day water cure and the other 1/2 hung and dried and then both jarred. I have a Nesco Dehydrator from Amazon [about $60] that I used for salmon, meats and the water cured weed. After reading this curing method of using about 60 to 63 Rh for the cure, I used this as the mark to shoot for. With the dehydrator set for 91 degree's the lowest settling I give the water cured about 8 hours drying and the fresh weed about 4 hours, then jar and drop in Rh gauge. After 24 hours I read the Rh gauge and then if its to high, back in the dehydrator for an hour or so, or if its to low leave the top off for awhile. Then when its stabilized at 60-63 Rh, I put a vacuum on the jar and let it cure for at least 6 months in a cold dark place. Seems to work. The vacuum device is called a "food saver" and is used for 1 quart jars, can be bought most anywhere [Amazon.com] for less than $10, needs a hand pump to go along with it, used the vacuum pump that I had bought for my car.

So here is my issue. Something has come up and I have to leave town for a month (it's work related) I had not planed on leaving right around my harvest time but I have no choice now. I wanted my BB to run a little but longer then 8 weeks and I know they won't be completley ready but I'll have to chop them anyways. My plan is the chop on the 14 of January and I have to leave on the 24 of January.

Can I get them dried and put into mason jars and be safe to leave them sealed up all within a 10 day window? I'd assume 4-5 days of hanging and then into jars then however many days for them to stabilize?

Can it safely be done within 10 days so that I can leave for a month and not have to worry about mold when I return?

Well would love to help but need more info. Temps? Relative Humidity? and even with that info things like density of buds play a factor. Is it possible - yes. Except for where I currently live, I've always had to hang dry for a week to 10 days. I'm thinking this might be a safe way for you to go. Better to overdry a bit then jar it than to jar it too wet and get mold. One can always rehydrate if needed. So unless you have really low Relative Humidity, that's probably the way to go. You could also order a couple of Boveda 65% packs and toss them into the jars along with your 10-day hang-dried herb. They will keep the jar's RH% usually between 60-63%. When you come back in a month - things should be pretty nice for you!

I've made myself a curing room where I can control the humidity and the temps. I'm thinking I'll have it set to 50% humidity and 70 degrees temperature. I suppose I could lower the humidity and dry them faster but I don't want flavor and quality to suffer. Maybe I'll have to harvest even a little bit earlier if I want it all to work out.

I have about 10% amber trichs so then have to finish up in the next week or so or there going to get the chop a bit early.

Hello Simon, and everyone else too.

Ordered my Caliber off Ebay, it was like 17.50 with shipping... could use two or three more, but one will have to do for now.

I admit that I did not read the entire thread, but I did get 15 or 20 pages into it, and I was wondering if you mention anywhere your technique for drying before you cure... whole plants vs. individual buds, trim before or after drying, and probably most importantly, the amount of time it actually takes to dry your harvest. Does the dry time matter so much if you have a good cure?

Sorry if this was covered recently....

FK

P.S.- Anyone else feels like responding, that would be great, too!

It appears that there is no moderator for Cannabis Harvesting & Processing forum.
Maybe we need the appeal to the powers to be to place a moderator to this forum so that this thread can become the sticky that it deserves.

Like Finestkind, I too would like to know how Simon dries his bud in detail. How he trims, the Temp, Humidity, and how long he hangs them up. By the way Simon, your the man! I picked up 4 caliber iii's and im gonna try this jaring method on my buds when they finish drying. Theyve been hanging for 4.5 days now. All my caliber iii's read within 1 degree and 1% humidity of eachother which is awesome

so are you all saying that 65% humidity is ideal for curing buds in a jar?

that seems too high to me...almost high enough to be inviting some mold...

i will go back through this thread when i have some time and try to figure this out.

-peace.

edit...i went back to the beginning...

you have got me convinced...

stabilize at 55%-60% for the cure...

hmmm...it just sounds high to me.

the proof is in the pudding. (or cured buds in this case)...

thanks for great info and you sure got a lot of people using this method with just about 100% success it seems.

great thread.

Ive kept a few jars of Sams O.Haze x Skunk stored at 67/68% RH for a week, and had no problems with mold. Now, I wouldn't try this with something that has denser nugs, but for sativas, its no problem.

got my best results so far with, first week in jars @ 65%, second week 62%, third week 60%, BOMB after that. smoked at 58% has been the best burn for me. i did runs where i started around 70% and kept it high for longer periods of time like above 65% and it turned out with hay aromas.

i only have 1 hydrometer so i can't really say if mine's 100% accurate, i should check it outside.

Picked up the Little Havana Hygrometer from the local cigar shop, how long do I have to keep opening the jars for?
