coco vs hydroton

hi guys

Last 3 years i grow sog stile in hydroton.Last couple of grows i have some root rot problems when i put new clones in to pots.I think beacuse hydroton was not cleaned enough between rounds.

I was thinking to try coco now.
Are in coco any advantages, disadvantages?
Are plants in coco grow faster or slower?
how about yield?

Different. Hard to compare, but I'll try.....

advantages disadvantages of using Coco or other soiless mixture
1. Water less - Depending on container size once a day to once a week
2. Coco and other soiless mixtures hold nutrients more. Therefore fertilize less and water inbetween fertilizing. Common mistake is to over fertilize and over water when plants are young.
3. Soiless mixtures give you a more latitude / flexibility when trying to dial in your PH

I'm sure there's more. I'm currently using hydroton after growing with a soiless mixture and wish I would have switched long time ago.

ive used both and i like coco because it holds moisture longer without becoming waterlogged and can be used with drippers, flood tables, or hand watering.

I vote give coco with bigger plants a try, IF you can find good coco that you don't need to flush. I hate having to flush that shit. And a SOG would require a ton of drip lines if you have a few kw or more.

Hard to beat coco + blumat + smart pot.

Wonder if you can clarify for me, what pot sizes from clone do you jump from in Smart Pots?

Could you tell me what the actual sizes of those pots would be in inches as I am going to make my own.

Thanks guys in advance!

ive used pebbles first coco second, the pebbles nice and clean
coco-gnats,deficences loads of probs for me so i think if i try coco
again i will do one by the side to see if i can get a hold on it
im back on to pebbles again and i dont need my fly swater again.

Coco is like soil, with all the good things from hydro world :) When growing with hydroton, you have to keep eye on watertemps more than with coco.

I have grown in soil, hydroton among few other styles and coco is best so far.

what about yield? Is better or not?

yield with coco is equal or better than hydroton, and some say the final product is more flavorful too.

do your SOG, feed 2x per day once rooted,

icmag user dongle69 pulled 14lbs off a 6kw coco SOG last year...

Gnats are an easy fix. Grind up Miskito dunks. Add 1/2 tsp per gallon of coco. Mix it up nicely. Or, if you drip, put 1/4 tsp of the grind under the dipper.

If you expect to scatter or compost your waste coco, don't use perlite, you can spot it a mile away. If you are going to trash your waste coco then a little perlite won't hurt anything.

Agreed ! Simple, and you can grow trees with very little maintenance required.

Or use coco-croutons, they blend right in. Or mix hydro-ton in there. :)
