Weed block cloth for gnat control

I have had gnat problems with my coco. Many of them most likely came from outside when we laid new sod late summer.
Anyways, I was thinking about trying some weed block fabric which is used in landscaping to help keep gnats out of the coco/buckets.

Has anyone tried this before?

I figured I would cut pieces the size of the tops of my buckets and lay it on top of the coco and maybe add some perlite to the tops to keep it in place.

I am doing hempy buckets and water daily, so the coco stays moist, which in turn attracts the gnats. Tired of adding chemicals to the coco and having sticky traps hanging around.

Just looking for any feedback on the fabric if anyone has tried it. If not, I will report back with my findings after this next run.

i ain't never tried no fabric!

But I also had a gnat problem in coco. I fixed it by putting a 1-2" layer of sand above the coco in my pots. I also began to bottom feed instead of top feed, but sand dries quickly enough to hinder the gnat's lifecycle. Though if you're hand watering, do it very lightly as the sand can and does easily mix with the coco.

Putting a tub (gnats like yellow) of water near the coco pots and you'll wake up to find dead gnats in it everyday.

i had terrible problems with gnats, and tried everything..sand on the surface, neem oil, mosquito dunks, etc. They all helped a little. FINALLY i found something that REALLY works in only 2 applications: AZAMAX. I will never use anything else it got rid of them permanently.

I recommend against the fabric, as i had gnats coming out of the bottom of my pots, and top coverage did nothing for me. Use azamax a few times and forget about the problem for good!

azamax worked really well for me as well. it did make my the smoke taste weird and burn bad. try to discontinue use 3 weeks before harvest.
i now mix some crushed up mosquito dunks into the coco when transplanting. if i see gnats flying around... i water with gognats in the beginning. i also place yellow sticky traps around. prevention is key.

Yeah, I am trying every preventative I can. Great white, hygrozyme, even Bayer/spectracide early in veg. Seems like nothing works for long term. I have tried different tea mixes, i.e.(SM90, Azamax, organocide) neem etc. Makes the air smell good and pisses the gnats off for a while, but doesn't seem to get rid of them. I have re-applied after a few days to kill the new borns, yet no luck. Some spider mites on a few clones were easier to rid than these damn gnats.

The gnats are not super bad, but still enough to be annoying and get stuck to buds.

nothing works better then bayer complete... I've tried it all... even putting the whole pot in a platic bag an tie-n it shut... fkn laughable... masquito dunks DO work, but its a slow process... bayer works over night... make up a solution at 10mil/gal and water... do it three times in one week and no more bugs!

May I ask if any of you have any experience with Diazinon 60% ?

And if so, what is the adequate dose for Cannabis? I live outside USA so at the moment it is still used around here.

Thanks folks!

Fookin gnats man.. I use coco and air pots. They love those things because the can fly straight to the bottom of the pot. I put a mosquito dunk in my rez with a panty hose over it (doesn't clog lines). Yellos sticky traps, crush up mosquito dunks and top dress pots. I still see a few here and their but their controlled for the most part. Never used Azamax, Azatrol or any heavy chemicals just worried about how it may effect the smoke. GL w/ them lil bastards.

???

??? I know they eat the white hairs on the roots and can cause less yielding and possibly deficient plants if theirs an outbreak but whats the health hazard? Your not smoking them unless they get caught in the triches but you can catch those at trim. Am i missing something? thanks!

Your thinkin about it wrong.... when i say health hazard im not referring to your plants roots...

Im referring to you or any human smoking the buds off a plant that has been suckng in all the chemicals given off from the sticky trap....

When i was growing in coco last, i used to put a 2inch layer of pea gravel on top of the pots that seemed to stop them.

There are a few easy fixes for gnats.... A. put a 2" layer of play sand(mentioned above) or perilite on the top of the pot will keep the gnats from breeding in the wet soil on the top of the pot... B. water your plants from the bottom... put your nute mix in a pan then set your plants in the liquid and allow them to suck the water up thru the drain holes...

IF you treat all the pots with everything mention above and keep the room clean you will get rid of them.

When you have extra coco, dirt or whatever laying around and uncovered it is just breeding grounds for the gnats.

So you kill the gnats in the plants. Then they look for new breeding grounds.

Ahh I see. I use drippers w/ a dtw setup. But I can def see a problem if your handwatering. I assume they dont give off chemicals sitting flat sticky side up on an air pot?
