I made a 10 gallon copper reflux still in college. I was one of the last that BATF issued experimental permits for.

I make some brandy every few years.

You can get 99.9% Ultra Pure Lab Grade Isopropyl alcohol from eBay mate. I always use these guys they are top quality

I wouldn't risk the hazards of doing it yourself in your kitchen

Yeah man listen to this guy, distilling your own liquor is really really unsafe if you're not familiar with the process. In addition to the risk of explosions theres also the risk that if you don't filter your distillate properly you could end up making poison that will make you blind or kill your if you ingest it. Start off brewing beer if you want to make alcohol and once you get a hang of that process then consider the distilling route. Last thing to mention is the Feds really don't play around with illegal distillers so if you get caught doing that you can expect some harsh retributions ie huge ass fine and possibly jail time. Be safe!

well if you want to do it yourself, you can get "distiller's yeast" to mix with sugar water, it'll ferment to about 20%. then distill off 20% of your volume and you should come in somewhere around 90% +

that Ebay stuff is fairly inexpensive, personally I wouldn't soak my flowers in anything manufactured by Shell, but that's just me

good luck
blessings

EDIT: Re:Noobian, if he's making ISO he won't be ingesting it anyways. Distilling outdoors seems safe enough to me if you've got a functional still and know how it operates. I don't think any of us want to play around with Feds regardless, but good tip. Be safe.

peace

Heh yeah I just saw that he said he wants to make ISO floral, mah bad lol! Since that's the case then he should 100% not try distilling, the risks far outweigh the potential benefits IMO. Iso is cheap and readily available on the web so OP should go that route...but then again maybe he is a thrill seeker hehe

Fires are from the old days when moonshiners used firewood for heat. New ops don't use wood. Imagine sending up smoke signals beside yer grow.

But booze still burns and some explodes if it's strong enough. Be careful

Poison comes from lead. Lead solder is typically present in copper coils. Old school shiners sometimes used car radiators for distillation coils, they wore out just like car radiators. Many times they were repaired with lead solder.

Others fashioned the infamous homemade copper coil you see in IRS pics. Basically, if lead solder is used to sweat copper, it's poison in alcohol. Just like a do-it-yourself er exchanging the water heater. Lead solder = poison. The hardware store gave me silver solder for the hot water heater. This stuff might be good on copper distillation coils. :bigeye:

My buddy has a stainless steel still. The coil is made from glass. (no copper, no solder)

Easy to distill ethanol. I do it routinely to recycle the alcohol from my process.

It is also easy to make from corn sugar, yeast, and water, but I have eschewed that because it is illegal locally without a distillers license and paying the taxes.

Attached is a picture of the unit that I built using a modified asparagus cooker for the still and copper tubing in a bowl of ice for the condenser.

Recovery is close top 100%, with ice cold ethanol exiting the coils into the collection bottle.

If you are going to do a second distillation to up the alcohol percentage, you will need to monitor temperature closely.l

Here is also a picture of my glass rig that I use to do that under vacuum:

Check with the Aussies mate, because they offer counter top stills. I intended to include a picture of one of their counter top unit, but couldn't find it in my library.

I build my own equipment, because that is what I do, but as you note, it is readily available off the shelf.

Hee, hee, hee, have fun!

Sorry, I misunderstood and thought you wanted to concentrate the vodka first.

After infusion reduction is a different issue, which includes how will you track the progress of your reduction and clean it out of your still once finished.
