My nephew is one of the biggest stoners at school

It is hard writing this post without feeling somewhat hypocritical.

Recently my brother and his wife found out that their soon to be 18 y/o son (senior year in school) is a big stoner.

Apparently hes been buying large quantities of pot and selling it to friends, and also smokes on a daily basis and drives around with it.

The kicker is the kid is really intelligent. He is taking advanced physics, math and biology classes and maintains almost a straight A average. He is also on track to getting into M.I.T.

Obviously his parents are not down with the buying, selling, or smoking.

I agree 100% with them on them with supplying it to his friends. If he gets caught there goes college, no loans, no scholarships, etc. As smart as he is this is one thing my nephew doesnt get.

Any advice that I can pass on to my brother and his wife, or nephew in how to deal with this? Im fairly successful, and smoke, and used that to point out that smoking once in awhile isn't an issue, but the other stuff clearly is.

tell him what you just said man. ask the kid if he really wants to jeopardize the things he has working in his favor for some extra smoke and pocket money. im all for getting stoned, but theres plenty of time for it once you get your foot in the door so to speak.

yeah bro! try explain it to him, like you just tried to explain us, if he really is a smart youth, he will understand. just try to explain him why it's a bad idea, and if he gets caught, he might loose a lot of opportunities, he will be missing out on later. if he ain't listening, slap the shit out of him, or show him some videos of marc emery, or such ;) *joke mode off*

that was me 30 yrs ago...straight A student, smoked daily, dealt on the side...but things were so different back then. Someone needs to set him straight on the dealing part...but I remember how cool it was back then to have cash and pot....so I hear ya on the hypocrite part.

make sure he carries a weapon on him if hes going to sell, i know a kid who got stabbed 20 to 30 times in high school for a mere ounce of pot... the kid who stabbed him got 5 years in YA and probably some BS after that but imo he got off easy

just tell him to stay safe

It's going to be extremely difficult to convince someone in that age to do the rational thing, even if it's in their self interest. Also, even if you think you convinced them, you probably didn't and they just listened to you and are just silently hating you for it. This is coming from someone who has been on both sides of the issue.

Casually selling pot to smoke for free and make a little on the side is too hard to pass up...especially at that age in addition to the social percs that coincide with selling. Not to mention the areas in the brain responsible for judgement calls isn't fully developed so that doesn't help. You seriously might want to consider compromising because the odds of getting him to completely quit selling and maintain positive relations are low. If you are in a medical state, look into cards. If not, try and get him to limit his customer base to his close long time friends, have him practice smart selling and give him the shpeel about not running his mouth and telling his friend(s) not to run theirs...Doesn't sound like a great option, I know. I just think that the total denial approach isn't very successful....

its been years but just thinking about this shit again makes me feel things i cant describe. i hope that POS got what he deserved at YA...

"In 1996, one inmate murdered a prison guard at the California Youth Authority. The inmate had repeatedly beaten, stabbed and strangled the guard then placed her body in a trash bin then carried it past prison guards before dumping her body in a trash dumpster. The dead body was found in a Pomona Landfill two days later."

"In December 2003, one juvenile suffered multiple puncture wounds to his lower leg when a California Youth Authority guard allowed his dog to attack a juvenile inmate who was following orders and lying on the floor. In an effort to clean up its bad image, the California Youth Authority decided to ask Prosecutors to file criminal assault charges against that officer."

i dont mean to offend here, but this is possibly the worst advice in this instance. you want the kid to stop selling, not catch more charges.

think about it. "oh! you sell weed? make sure you invest in a pistol!"

i understand what you are trying to say, but there are better ways of going about it than arming this kid. remember that IF something were to go down things would be exponentially worse if this kid was caught with both bud and a weapon. you're talking felonies here. the OP wants this guy to get into college, not the pen.

EDIT: when i say felonies i mean multiple. if hes holding any kind of weight, theres one. distribution is another, and the weapon while in the commission of a crime is a third.

Agreed.

teach him to grow so the quantities he's rolling with are much bigger and street dealing is no longer cost effective, it'll take him a year to learn to grow so by then he'll be 18 and can supply Massachusetts coops with their herb once he goes to MIT...

hope he gets a "A" in game. i guess since they know they'd better get pro active. teach him to stack and then invest he can then QUIT. you can always go back to a hustle (aging whores are the exception), can't always get back to the streets after a thief or a cop..... dos lincolnes

The OPs nephew reminds me alot of myself back in the day.

My father told me how HE used to do the same thing when he was my age and how stupid he was for doing it, and that I should stop. He didnt have a problem with me smoking, just selling and being a complete stoner when I should have been focusing on school.

Being 18 at the time i didn't give two shits about what my old man said, and a month after that talk I was arrested. Going through court, spending thousands on a lawyer (I was charged with a felony), going to (court ordered) rehab, loosing ALL the trust I had between my parents and I, fines, and getting my mug shot in the local newspaper was what it took to straighten me up.

Only now do I realize how wise my father was.

So when you talk to him, remind him that at the very least what hes doing is illegal, and if he gets arrested it will have profound implications on his future. perhaps you should also mention harm (arrest) reduction strategies such as never breaking more that one law at a time (no speeding, trespassing, DUI, etc.) and to be careful what you carry and how you stash contraband (no scales in car, no extra baggies in car, never more than a OZ (or whatever laws are in your state), etc.).

But usually it will take a nothing less than serious fuck up to get a teenagers head on straight :\

You are just asking for problems if you start sticking your nose in other peoples business, family or not.

I'd recommend the harm reduction plan mentioned by Shine, I don't think he will consider anything else.

I do remember what it was like, I was doing the same shit. The hard line attitude of stop doing everything would have gotten a quick F U, but someone saying, hey man nothing wrong with the herb, but you might out to take a little more precaution, etc...

If the folks bought the car...Take the Keys!...Treat like 15, Drive him to school or make take Bus!..

Give an eye opening quick surprise lesson...Pac his shit!.. Place it in garage with sleeping bag, and tell him he's on his own!

...Somehow convey to him....At 18, he has the same rights and claims to the space he is presently occupying, as the person standing on the corner with a sign in hand wanting help while living under a bridge in a Box!.......He's just a temporary guest there!.....So...

Stop the allowance!!, No more computer, gameboy, music, clothes. And Take back the credit cards!!! :D

Have him get a part time job!....or...Check him into an after school Volunteer program, (hang around some Old Folks)....WORK HIS ASS OFF cleaning, painting, repairing, and anything thinkable around the house, (Grab all the free labor they can, while they can!) :D saying it's time for new life lesson!.....paying Room & Board!....and Not getting another Dime from Ma & Pa....:whip:

Put him on Probation...Now until 18th birthday...

After that...It's their way!!.....or.....a Felt Marker, piece a cardboard, full tank of fuel, and whatever he can carry in the new CarHome...

.........We can only hope!.. it's not a Prius!

I agree thats how I was when I was a kid too , you can try to school the kid on the game , but most of the time people got to learn for themselves....
If this kid is sooo smart maybe talk to him about setting up a network of workers to TCB
while he is insulated from charges by not ever touching the packages himself?, If he gonna sell , he gotta use all that brain power , to try not to be caught , remind him he will have to "toss the salad" in the lock up ?, maybe that will inspire him to change up a bit?,
