how much run off for a hempy style bucket?

Hey all,

Thinking about starting a hempy grow next, but was wondering how much water you guys add each time you water the plants. I assume you let some run off out of the drain hole, but how much do you let out?

Thanks!

There really isn't a set amount. When you have run off it's enough. Glad to see you're thinking about running Hempy's. Good luck and grow safe.

i have 11 liter pots. I water every 3 days. I give them a half gallon each and I get run off every time.

I do not allow any run off and have had no problems. I do hempy in straight perlite. What I will try to do, but I don't always, is give a good flush before I put them in flower. I am not exactly sure why a little run off would change anything that is going on inside the bucket. I would think it would be used just to make sure you are filling it up all the way. But this can be accomplished with a little trial and error.

i never check the ph or ec of my run off.. my plants look fine. check out my diary for examples.

also, i rarely check the ph of my nutrient solution. hempy buckets are simple.

Rukind is right on the money. They are real easy and you don't have to do a bunch of testing. I will say that I do test the ph when trying different nutrients or additives, but after it's set, provided the water source stays the same, it's set.

yeah I would always check ph If I try a different nutrient.

I have only used gh 3 part. All I got to do is make sure the ph of my water is 7 (my water is 8, so i add about 1ml of ph down to get it to 7). After that I just follow the directions on the back of the bottle. full strength every watering (about every 3 days). takes about a half gallon of water pet 11 liter pot to get run off for me.

Yep easy as pie and no worries about water temps etc etc...but I still recommend watching your runoff ph and ec this tells you what your internal rez conditions are. I change my nutrient concentration and ph to steer the internal rez to my desired 1.7ish ec and 6.2ish on the ph but you can just "let er buck" and it still works ok... gotta love soiless grows. I spent 10+ years running in soiless medium and never had a meter or a clue about solution ph or ec and still did pretty damn well.

I've seen growers do 20%, 0%, just enough water to see a dribble then stop. I think I also read somewhere that a hempy grower doesn't even put the hole in the bucket.

My advice is to find what works for you but be logical about it. Start out doing a 10-20% runoff so you can ph/tds the effluent. Once you learn your style and what works for you, you probably don't need a runoff.

My hempys on drip irrigation get very little run off daily. But once every 2-3 weeks I will turn on my pump and let the hempys flush out a bit.

You dont need much run off to keep your ppms and ph in check.

i water until just a drop starts coming out. Almost no runoff at all. never ph my water, never even check it. Plants do great! 6/9 head formula with GH in hempy with coco and perlite in the bottom.

I am using a clear cup with holes in the bottom, inside an opaque cup with no holes. This allows me to flush/drain my reservoir whenever I want. If the plants look overwatered/underwatered, I'll just peak at the roots, and adjust the water level in the reservoir. Plus every time I pull the inner cup out, I'm drawing fresh air into the root zone via negative air pressure. I don't know if you would consider this hempy, but I do use 90% perlite.

in hempy buckets, i dont think its possible to over water. maybe if you are using coco? but i dont think its possible if you are using perlite or perlite/verm. depends on how much vermiculite you use maybe.

the rez is pretty small, so a lot of the roots are not sitting in the rez. Also perlite helps by adding oxygen.

I don't think you can overwater but you absolutely can get rootrot if your drain holes are too high and too much of the rootmass sits in water.

I top-up daily all week long and then on Saturday I drain the pots best I can, flush with pHed tap, drain again and fill with nute water.

isn't it bad to let light into the root zone?

i drill a hole 2 inches up a 11 liter pot.. fill it up with perlite/ver mix.. never have root rot or any issue like that.

maybe if your rez is bigger. i can understand that.

but if you follow the simple directions of the hempy bucket, you wont get root rot.

if i was using a smaller cup or a smaller pot, then I would just scale it down.

its also impossible for me to drain my hempy's.. my plants are tied against a screen.

okay i see that the inside cup is an opaque cup. sorry for not reading more carefully.

your not exactly doing a hempy bucket are you?

but with a hempy bucket you dont need to worry about overwatering or underwatering really. unless you cannot water your plant in 4 days or so.. which is rediculous.

so it seems like you are making things more complicated.

but if it works for you, that is great. no reason to change things that work for you.
