The Official Hempy Bucket Thread

If you are really struggling to find a suitable container, look no further than your refrigerator. You're bound to find something suitable in there.

1/2-1 gallon milk cartons are great. Being square is also nice for maximizing root space. Jugs will work as well.

Simply orange (or other brand) juice containers.

The tall, round 1 gallon ice cream containers (like edy's) work well.

The clear lids to 100 or 200 cd-r/dvd-r spindles.

Cheap plastic bathroom trashcans. You might be able to find one on freecycle or craigslist for next to nothing.

Check your local grocery store for disposable tupper ware containers. They don't always have larger sizes in stock, but you never know. Plus you'll be in the food storage aisle at this point. You're bound to run across something there.

Blynx uses big goldfish cartons. Some are watertight and some aren't, though. IIRC the larger cartons are not, while the smaller ones are, but i'm not 100%. Might want to bag the inside either way to be safe.

Hell, you could use a free standing ziploc freezer bag if you wanted to. :)

There are tons of unconventional, and virtually free, options out there. Just gotta stretch the imagination a bit.

Great information Confidential! I use a medium perlite. My ratio with vermiculite is around 25%. I do believe I'll have some residual salts left on the hydroton after a grow, but not as much as I had with the ebb & flow I used originally. Our containers range in size from 2gal to 5gal. Short vegged plants get the smaller container. We have a perpetual system running 500w T5 in veg and 1kw hps vertical in bloom. Also, we germinate directly in the cups (only moving the seedling ~3 weeks from planting with great results. I will post information on the side by side (100%, 75/25 mix, perlite/hydroton mix) after.
Hey dubwise ,

Thanks for the info. Sounds like a nice setup. I can't wait to hear/see your results!

Good luck highlight, please post some results when you get 'em up. I'd like to see how the rr's & vermiculite do. You shouldn't have to water but once every four or five days I would think.

Ahhh yes, the power of hempy's ... rock on everyone :D

Very nice, SG. What size bucket did you grow in?
I am currently doing hempy as well in 3 gallon buckets. I am curious as to what your roots look like when you pull it. I would like to drop down a bucket size next run to 2 gallon buckets to save space and add more plants.
My plants are currently about 24" and I would like to grow them out to about 3' this next run, but I am worried that 2 gallons may be a little restricting.

Anyone have any pictures of their roots after a run? Please post your bucket size and height of plant(s) if possible.
Thanks.

check out my hempy grow https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=195051

I am using a perlite/verm mix. 3:1

Until the last 20 days of flowering or so, I can wait up to 5 days to water. That is great if you are going on a vaction or something like that. That is the advantage of vermiculite. Perlite alone would be easier than mixing them together, though.

Next, I want to use perlite without mixing vermiculite to do a comparison.

Wow only 3days and here I am at the end of this amazing thread... I would like to thank everyone for there opinions and thoughts on this kiss hydro setup... You guys have made me decide to dump my aero setup with all of it's complexities for a simple lil bucket that's what I'm talking about. You all rock. I transplanted six testers into two gallon hempys yesterday morning to give it a whirl. Again thanks to everyone out on ic mag.

hello everyone in my sigs grow log you can see my new hempy's.
I am using somewhat tall and thin containers cause i found some usefull info
in this thread . Do you think that i must raise my run off hole at 2,5 - 3 inches
so my res can hold the same amound of water ??

Bucket is only 1.2 gallons. Works like a charm. I have 4 that just came down last night so I will snap a pic of those roots tonight and throw them up here.

With hempys it's a lot like Hydro in that you don't end up wasting much space with medium. I will admit that perhaps I could use a bit more root room, but thus far, these work perfect for anything that runs ~10 weeks.

Plants are supercropped / topped due to height restrictions. but end up at about 3ft.

I think you would be pleased with the 2 gallon buckt. IMHO, that is the ideal size for hempy ... give it a go, nothing to lose, right ?

peace,
sg

I use 2gal & 5 gal, and even when vegging a plant for over two months, there was plenty of room for roots. We've done a few in 15 gal containers vegged for six months and still no root bound issues. I agree with SG....2 gal seems perfect for most applications.
I've got a few coming down Thursday and will try to get some pics of the roots.

Cool. Thanks, everyone. I will also get a picture when I harvest in a month. First time doing hempy, so not too sure what to expect. Really anxious to see what my roots have been doing in the 3g buckets.

just a heads up, wally world (at least in my area) has 3Gal sterilite white bathroom trashcans for 2.50$

Here is the root ball as promised ...

Just a week later, my bad.

I've had much thicker roots before but those got vegged out for a month+ or so. Still, didn't get rootbound issues. This one was a 3 week veg I think ?

The guy he is talking about, Docbud is a cool guy, I took place in the Hempy thread with him at that site and good info was being shared. Unfortunately the site has a few well known growers and if you debate any grow info that goes against their word the get their little friends to cause trouble for ya, which is really sad because you end up with a site that thinks if you put your aero cloner on a timer it will kill the clones and silly stuff like that.

I'm a long time member of that site and in my opinion it's top notch. Every site has it's idiots. Peace.

sorry for the double post, but I was unable to load both root pics. These are from the same plant, the first is before cleaning out the medium. This plant had a three to four week veg time under 500w and bloomed under 1kw.
