How do you maintain the vigor of an IBL?

My bottom line is I would use whatever and however many plants are available that fit the selection criteria be they male or female.Thats if I wanted to preserve the genes and keep vigour too...but in an ideal world I would use a similar amount of each sex and if possible each phenotype. ;]

yes im good, thanks a lot londinium, :)

i think 1:1 inbreeding is the quickest method to fix traits (after selfing) but im wondering if it could be a good idea to cross each selected female to a group of males showing overall vigor, good structure and maybe some other characteristics in order to not lose much vigor in the future generations...

1:1 increases the ratchet it can be the quickest way to end a line (and I imagine you'd lose vigour pretty sharpish too).......

I´d choose potency over vigour..I don´t want vigorous plants if they are lacking in potency...at least outdoors in my latitude
potency is #1 in my book :)
I like to use the highest number of (selected) males possible. That saves alleles...

Why just males?

In genetics, Muller's ratchet is a hypothesis that explains how functionally important genes may be lost when organism's genes are only transmitted vertically

1:1 matings can bring about deleterious mutation due to lack of genetic material to work with.

Horizontal gene transfer is any process in which an organism transfers genetic material (i.e. DNA) to another cell that is not its offspring. By contrast, vertical transfer occurs when an organism receives genetic material from its ancestor, e.g. its parent or a species from which it evolved.

very interesting read, thankyou.

On the DC vigor i bought a pack of the recent release from tom and didnt find it to be as slow as i was expecting (from research) so perhaps Toms line has more vigor? i think he used a wide selection for that batch. DC stops being happy as soon as the roots hit the edge of the pot, so if you keep potting it on i found it grows plenty fast enough.

excuse me but what is the ratchet ? and does it means you consider 1:1 matings a bad breeding technik ?

Personally I do... what I have been disappointed to learn is a lot of offerings for high $$$ are the result of 1:1 mating.. I prefer to work a line and then have the option of using different specimens to create the seedlot.. how many times to you hear of a line being lost as the result of one parent dying!!!

but what are the options when you want to true bred two lines separately (for example two unrelated lines) in order to cross them later to create a true f1 hybrid ?

by moving each line slowly but surely using the correct Ne and applying selective pressure.
