Another Internet Seed Seller Gets a Six Year Sentence

Marc Emery won’t be the only person in a US prison for selling seed over the internet. In Fort Wayne, Indiana a judge has sentenced a man to six years in a federal prison for selling marijuana seeds over the Internet. 30-year-old Jesse Groth sent seeds around the world from his northeastern Indiana home. He used the business name, “Elite Genetics” with the address of his home on Hamilton Lake in Stueben County.

Police found out about Mr. Groth’s operation last year when a woman from another state complained to investigators that her teenage son had stolen hundreds of dollars from her to buy marijuana seeds on line. A search warrant was executed and police found marijuana in the home, scales, growing equipment and over 100 marijuana plants used to make the seeds for his business.

At the time of the search, investigators also found numerous packaged seeds that were ready to ship. A federal grand jury indicted Groth on a charge of manufacturing a controlled substance. He and his partner, 21-year-old Laura Wass shared the home and she was also charged. Groth, as it turns out, was also wanted on an old eBay fraud charge as well. He was accused of bilking money from people for sports cards on the Internet selling site, but then not sending them the goods. There was an outstanding charge of mail fraud from 2006 and federal wire fraud charges stemming from that case.

According to court documents, Jesse Groth is ordered to pay $20,788 in restitution for that crime on top of his manufacturing a controlled substance. For her part in the marijuana seed operation, Laura Wass plead guilty in July and was sentenced to time already served and given no additional jail time for participating in the operation. Groth will also spend an additional four years supervised probation after he completes his 75 month prison sentence.

So it would seem that the sales of seeds were completely ignored by the legal system.

Fuck this guy. Of course I have no issue with him selling seeds online and in fact commend this. But as a retired nerd of a highly valuable trading card game, I'm well aware of how much money this guy could've fucked out of people with zero moral justification- I've sold pieces of cardboard for quite literally more than their weight in gold.

It would've been nice if the fraud alone would have put him on police radar and he'd only end up liable for restitution on that. It also would've been nice if the police cared more about a scam to the tune of twenty grand than selling what is essentially pre-born plants.

Elite Got 6 yrs Federal

FORT WAYNE – A 30-year-old Michigan man was sentenced to more than six years in federal prison for running a large marijuana-growing operation that used the Internet to sell seeds around the world.

A federal grand jury had indicted Jesse S. Groth on a charge of manufacturing a controlled substance.

He and 21-year-old Laura Wass were accused of running a large business that grew marijuana and sold pot seeds online from a Hamilton Lake home.

According to court documents, the two shipped a variety of marijuana seeds throughout the U.S. and to other countries under the business name Elite Genetics. They lived in the home on Hamilton Lake in Steuben County.

The business came to light last year when a woman from another state e-mailed Ashley police, telling them her teenage son stole hundreds of dollars from her and admitted to sending the money to a marijuana-seed operation in Indiana.

When the woman searched her son’s computer, she found e-mails from Elite Genetics directing him to mail payments to Laura Wass on Hamilton Lake, according to court documents.

Around the same time, in a separate investigation, U.S. Postal Service inspectors contacted the Hamilton Police Department regarding Groth. He was a fugitive, having skipped out on a 2006 sentencing on federal wire fraud charges.

Groth had been charged with bilking eBay buyers out of thousands of dollars, not sending them sports cards they had bought. He was sentenced in absentia to two years in prison on two of the counts and ordered to pay $20,788 in restitution, according to court documents.

In July, Wass was sentenced to time already served and given no additional jail time for participating in the operation.

She pleaded guilty this year to a charge of manufacturing more than 100 marijuana plants.

In her sentencing order last week, U.S. District Judge Theresa L. Springmann ordered the 75-month sentence to be served after Groth finishes the time in the eBay case as well as additional time for failing to appear in that case.

Groth will also be required to serve four years of supervised release in addition to the prison sentences and abide by other terms of supervised release.

Groth is asking for the court to return some of his property, including computers, printers and his extensive sports card collection, which he said contains more than 100 rare cards, according to court documents

after, he does his time he'll have more connections. in a weird kind of way this will be one of the better things that happens to him. if dude isn't a little bitch or tattle tell he'll be just fine. if i were him i'd come home and i'd become a legend with all the connections. i know alot of people here don't fuck with him but, jail isn't something you wish or your worst enemy, death is.

A crime doesn't have to be violent to have a victim. For example, folks who bilk or extort money from other folks should face possible jail time, imo. I don't have much time or respect for thieves.

Elite had good genetics? Did I miss something here?

If I remember correctly, he had a bunch of fancy names with a bunch of "clone only" plants that were never truly confirmed...

And if I remember correctly, there were all kinds of people that sent him money and NEVER received their seeds...

Same scam artist...same scam...different industry. Now he gets to consume 150k a year worth of tax money while he wastes away in a federal pen.

Sucks for his story to end up like this. I'd never want or wish such a result on anyone, especially not for spreading the seed and growing...but when you do enough things against the law, it builds up. But it is odd how they don't mention the charges issued for the seed sales and what not...

I'm not disagreeing with ya Frank, how hard would of it been for elite to get those genetics? I could round up the majority of cuts he had as I'm sure you could too.The Lemon Larry looks more than legit to me. Jail solves nothing PERIOD. Those talking bad about a fallen brother might just need to see the inside of a jail cell themselves, so they might understand what its like to be jailed over another disagreeing with your lifestyle. Unfortunately its a brave new world. If ya get scammed, its no different from what our own government does to all of us every day, they make the laws though. Elite spread some great genetics that weren't readily available in seed form at the time, for that I commend him. Maybe I missed some of his bad deeds, it doesn't change anything Ive said. I do however believe ya get what ya put out there. The worst part is this all happened because a young kid charged seeds on his moms credit card. Ya don't run a seed company from your grow opp./home. Be safe out there people. Peace pot and karma, One Love:ying:

Well there is the tough question isn't it? How much does it cost the state of XX to keep non-violent con man in the can per year?

How much did the con man steal?

Bernie Madoff is the biggest example we have, he stole billions. Other clowns steal and shoplift for pennies. It is really a tough line to draw, but in truth I don't want to pay to imprison non-violent offenders.

Tattoo their forehead, cut off their hand. I'll pay for the ink or cleaver, but for christs sakes throwing good money after bad isn't got to reform them. You want your pound of flesh I'm all for it, but please lets not spend thousands housing these clowns and paying for Jr. Pig Prison Guard Unions!

Fuck jail time for non-violent offenders.. how does time that we all pay for help the victim? If there is no victim, then whats the crime?

Why not put them to "work" and give the proceeds to the people that were actually ripped off?

Time for crime is a new idea (quakers), and it sux unless you are the one getting paid to do the locking up.

A scammer is a scammer....we KNOW he's bilked the "friends and families" of others through ebay...thereby demeaning trust among serious collectors of trading cards towards ebay safety...

...additionally it was mentioned by someone earlier in the thread how many people sent him money for seeds in his new "venture" yet got nothing...I've heard the same from others myself.....

....and stealing power for your plants is not just another way to increase your presence and perhaps your sentence when you're caught, but the added negative criminal stigma created by people like him makes it all the more difficult to legitimize the value of cannabis among the non-smoking/growing population of our countries....

...I don't like seeing any non-violent MARIJUANA growers (seeds or bud) put in jail...but this guy smears our cannabis community with disloyalty and dishonor...to steal from another smoker/grower/medical patient...whether you beat them to death with a bat or do a mail order get 'n jet makes no difference...they're brothers/sisters at arms (or arms length depending on what you smoke...lol)...you don't have to be an activist to be active...but if you can't trust your brother for seeds that's a sadder day than locking him up for being the money/trust stealing douche that he is....

peace

He might have had some good genetics but he set himself up to fail. Im surprised it lasted that long. Not the smartest thing to do in my book.

Another way to look at it is if he knew he would be caught and tried to make as much cash as he could before that happened. How many of you would do 6 years for a million bucks? thats assuming he had that kind of client base.
