5th-Grader Takes Pot to School, Turns in Parents

(Oct. 18) -- An elementary school student in North Carolina took lessons he learned from a drug awareness program to heart last week by turning in his own parents for breaking the law, police say.

The fifth-grader, who attends an elementary school in Matthews, N.C., recently took part in a DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program at his school. The program, which was started in California in 1983, is intended to give children valuable skills for resisting the allure of drugs, gangs and violence.

The Matthews community has its own DARE officer who spreads the organization's message to three of the area's elementary schools, WBTV reported.

Upon attending the DARE presentation, the 11-year-old student, who is not being identified, brought an undisclosed amount of marijuana cigarettes to school. The boy allegedly told a school safety officer that the drugs belonged to his parents.

On Thursday, officers with the Matthews Police Department arrested the child's 40-year-old father and 38-year-old mother and charged them both with misdemeanor counts of marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The child's parents were cited but not jailed, pending their next court appearance. Social services, however, has removed the 11-year-old and a sibling from the family home and placed them with relatives, police say.

The Matthews Police Department did not return calls for comment from AOL News today. On Sunday, Matthews police Officer Stason Tyrrell spoke briefly with WBTV.

"Even if it's happening in their own home with their own parents, they understand that's a dangerous situation because of what we're teaching them," Tyrrell said.

WBTV also spoke with the child's father, who told them he does not give drugs to his children. When asked how his child got the drugs, the father reportedly said it was "no one's business."

Kids shouldn't have access to drugs. But on the other hand, why-in-the-fuck is it OK for parents to keep beer in the fridge?

You want to bite the hand that feeds you?
Time to make the kid a ward of the state, see how the little narc likes being raised in a series of foster homes.

Fvck D.A.R.E., the system, those who support it and other programs like it.
These programs are set up to turn our children into informants before they are old enough to understand the implications of their actions. They
are then left to reap the karma in which they have sown. Peace pot and karma, One Love:ying:

Yeah, why is this any different than leaving a beer in the fridge? Fucking hippocrites only use logic when it suits them.

I actually can't wait to see opposing groups start standing up and demanding that if DARE programs are going to be conducted by police and law enforcement, there should be a similar program teaching the opposite...that drugs are fine in moderation, educate the kids on what the drug is, what it does and that it should be only used by adults, etc.

I would of removed my child from class if I knew DARE classes were taking place.

You really can't blame the kid, he's taught by an authority figure that drugs are bad and what does he do...turn his parents in! Sounds like another child that doesn't truly have a mom and dad at home otherwise he would know that his parents ALWAYS trump law enforcement in every facet and that what goes on at home stays at home. Teach the kid some values and rules rather than letting the establishment do so...as the results aren't welcomed.

Re: 5th-Grader Takes Pot to School, Turns in Parents

That's heartbreaking....
Where did he get the J's though. That's pitifully too frankly. Despite my own beliefs I realize beer is legal to possess while the other not. I will not put my son in a position where he is remotely aware of anything. It ain't right but due to the consequences necessary unfortunately. That kid should not of had the joints period. Imagine if he came to school with a fifth? Only difference is liquor is legal for the parents to have, I would still fault them for allowing their kid to take the liquor. Its just sad for the kids...

The question is, was this 11year old kid affected by his pot smoking parents by any way?

Is it right to break a family apart because of a couple of joints?

Wont the kid be in a worse situation now than he was from the start?

Who are they trying to help?

Maybe the DARE officer should be jailed cause hes actions made the kid rat on his own parents?

What kind of fucking bullshit propaganda about weed was enough to make this kid rat on his own parents?

Dont blame the kid they were probably told you can die from smoking pot, and the kid was probably trying to save his parents life

certainly not the kid, and the parents are grown ups they should be allowed to smoke a joint everynow and then just like the teacher of those kids takes a glass of wine to every dinner.......?

The only problem with this theory, were I live, your child can only miss so many days before the authority's get involved. State officials prosecute parents when their kids don’t show up to school. These programs (D.A.R.E. etc.) sometimes last as much as a month. We have no power over what the public school system teaches our children. My only option, if I want to have a say in what my children are taught is to pay 500-1200 dollars a month per child to go to a private school, which I have done in the past. Even doing so, unless I volunteer on a regular basis, it is once again out of my hands. Whats a parent to do? I am disgusted with the direction my government has taken in almost every way. If I speak out too much I put my family's safety at jeopardy. Watching a KKK documentary on the History channel the other day. a elected official said,"the KKK and the patriot movement were the same thing" it made the show. Just a lil rant, take care and be safe. Karma, One Love:ying:

Child Turns In Parents After a D.A.R.E. Lesson

Child Turns In Parents After a D.A.R.E. Lesson
Cannabis Karri on October 18, 2010

Last week, it happened again. The day after a lesson about marijuana was given to 5th graders at an elementary school in Matthews, North Carolina an eleven year-old-student brought his parents marijuana to school to give to a D.A.R.E. officer and report them. D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education and is an international education program aimed at children.

The program that began in 1983 in California has students sign a pledge not to use drugs or join gangs. The interactive in-school curriculum last ten weeks and is taught by a trained police officer in full uniform. D.A.R.E. has been criticized because follow up studies have proven it to be ineffective at best. Scientific evaluation studies have consistently shown that DARE is ineffective in reducing the use of alcohol and drugs and is sometimes even counterproductive — worse than doing nothing. That’s the conclusion of the U.S. General Accounting Office, the U.S. Surgeon General, the National Academy of Sciences, and the U.S. Department of Education, and others. DARE is being implemented in 80 percent of the United States’ school districts and in more than 43 countries around the world.

In the North Carolina case, a spokesman for the Mathews Police department, Officer Stason Tyrrell said about the incident, “Even if it’s happening in their own home with their own parents, they understand that’s a dangerous situation because of what we’re teaching them, That’s what they’re told to do, to make us aware.” Police arrested the child’s 40 year-old father and 38 year-old mother on Thursday. Both were charged with two misdemeanor counts each of marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

They were both released after the arrests and given a date to appear in court. In response to media reporters waiting for him outside of his house, the father told them point blank,”I don’t give drugs to my kids.” When asked where his child got a hold of the marijuana he replied, “that’s no one’s business”. The eleven year old child that turned in his parents to a DARE office along with a sibling have been removed from the parents home by social services. Police report that they are staying with relatives.

I am totally against any dare narc BS but I have to ask how the hell the 5th grader KNEW they were joints? There is really 2 problems here.

Using school kids as informants.

Why your 5th grader knows where the hell your weed is.

I agree that Weed and Alcohol should be on the same level when it comes to the law. However it ISN'T legal yet and that kid should have had no idea where the parents smoke was.

People you have to talk to your kids and let them know about the evils of DARE, it is what my wife and I did. Sat her down and told her that some people think smoking weed is wrong and it is against the law and that people at school might ask her about it. She is a smart cookie and we never had any issues. We also never hid it from her either, my rational was that if I don't think it is wrong to do then why should I hide it. It helps a lot if actually talk to your kid on a regular basis and they know that they can come to you with any problem. Over the year several of her friend stayed with us for a time because of problems at home and it shocked me that none of these kids felt they could talk to their parents about their problems. WTF parents, you are supposed to be their rock that they can count on. ///END RANT
