Attempting different methods to murder my plants, weekly :-)

Hi!

I was trying to avoid documenting my grow however the with the amount of mistakes ive made and the amount gardening skills i've learnt it seems somewhat unavoidable.

I was orriginally going to keep a written diary however if i were to be busted the thought of a judge reading it wouldn't be a great one.

So here i go ...

My thread is about the different ways i will go about killing my plants in an effort to learn as i go. My grow is a few weeks old and i will go through all of the brown, burnt and droping leaves and how i came to correct them. Please feel free to put any input in if you have had similar situations int he past. Whilst i have tried to study as much information available ont he internet and the various books i have, so much of it seems to be varied. In my opinion there are many things that need to be taken into account that there is no open and shut one stop one size fits all approach to growing.

ok, i have quickly thrown together what my set up looks like



It's a simple waterfarm 2 plant hydroponic system.

Water in the 60Lt res is pumped to the pots, im filling 50lt into res.

The water is kept at 20 deg celcius by the water heater.

PH floats between 6.0-6.5. (5.8 is nice). PH seems to stick around 6.5.

The air pump pumps air into air stones in the water of the res and the bottom pots.

The water recirculates as in the diagram, water is pumped into the top pot. It drenches the roots. Falls through the clay pebbles with help from gravity and makes its way back into the res.

I am running a 600 watt hps light 2 feet above the plant canopy. I also have a 6 inch fan pushing air into the roof.

That basically sums up my set up ...

Also I employ Fred Durst. He packs a chainsaw and everyone hates him so he does a good job at keeping people away from my secret grow. As well as that he doesn't actually steal any of my produce, as he puts it "I don't even smoke. But i love the way it smells."

i dont think theres much point to me rewriting it all but i had some issues and it looks liek the plant is getting better. in a couple of days i will post pics and updates and fill in the nutes/additives & security section i promised.

Oh yeah my system is called "Waterfarm" not bubbleponics, ill amend all of the parts of my posts to reflect this.

and this is fromt he above link ... things ill do differently next grow

- choose a better growing medium, or a diff method of propergation for clay balls. (ill use rockwool/pearlite) or figure out how to get the current one to work before using it.
- use a much more forgiving system (simple flood drain that i can build myself) or figure out how to get the curent waterfarm system working before using it.
- water heaters are to be set to 20 degrees celcius not 30 ;-)
- using full strength solution from like day 5 will pwn your plants. when the roots have popped out of the larger rockwool cubes start with 30% and up it incrementaly each week. dont use full str nutes + seedling food which also contains NPK then stand around going why are my plants burnt to the shit house!? ;-)
- keep under flouros until roots have popped out of large rockwool cube, dont put under 600 watt light after 5 days ;-)

it's been a slow week as i have been both away and sick. So unfortunatly i havnt had much time for the project. but that is the great thing about hydroponics, you just set it up and it grows xD.

im 4 weeks into veg and here are some pics of the two plants they are over a foot tall each. the roots have dropped through the holes in the bottom of the top pot on both plants.

i really like this style of growing (setup) in threory but in practise i dont think its that great for an inexperianced grower such as myself.

as you can see the leaves have a 'claw finger' appearance. they also had 'rams horns' however thankfully that ironed itself out.

my water feeding rotation was 15 mins on 45 mins off, and i had these leaf curling symptoms.

i slowed the rotation down to 1/2hr on 2.5 hrs off and it got waaay worse within a day or two.

i put it back on 15 on 45 off and they improved.

i talked to a mate who used to grow with the pump on 24/7. this seems a bit extreme however i dont see how it cant work. like in theory the reason why you wouldnt have the pump on 24/7 is because you would starve the roots of o2 and they would choke/die and possibly cause root rot.

in my system i have an air pump pumping air to stones in the bottom pots as well in the res. my water pump sits next to the air stone. so i would be pumping o2/water up top.

anyway im giving it a go, i have the rotation as 15 on 15 off.

i have the drip ring set up so it delivers the water away from the rockwool cube (both to the side and below).

the following is a pic of my res witht he pump setup. i have turned the water heater OFF. as you can see there is liek this brown shit on the floor of the res.

i dont think its algae cos the top of the water is clear and the res allows for no light to enter.

i dont think its root rot as the PH does not fluctuate, the water does not smell and there is no 'goop' in the water or on the roots.

my best bet is that it is a mixture of the rhizotonic mixture i use and some dust run off that i couldnt clean from the clay balls. i did my best to clean as much dust as i could from the system however the medium is a pain in the arse!!

I have soaked n rinsed dem li'l buggahs for days.
Every time they touch each other, more "red dust".

Have pre-conditioned them for as long as a week in PH 5.5 water.
They still caused a rise in PH over time.
I don't use 'em anymore.
Switched to coco.

As for the dust, I "sucked " mine out with a siphon hose.
Just start it up and "vacuum" da bottom of da res.

yeah man im over clay balls. such a bad medium, i found pearlite so much easier back in the day.

im actually wondering if the leaf curling & yellowing on the edge of the leaves is caused by the dust in the water. im going to look into it.

Anyway japan dw man, Freds on his way out ... i've heard Chuck Norris does a way better job and doesn't come with the try hard factor

i bought some cannazym and added it to the tank today. its supposed to turn the dead roots into new growth. hopefully it helps the plant out.

if not im going to have to look at something a bit more heavier like pyth-off which has like 0.1% bleach in it o_0

i put some cannazym in the tank and the plants started to improve. then last night i lifted on of the plants top pot up to inspect the roots and the air stone appeared clogged!

i went and grabbed a new toothbrush and scrubbed the air stone and the flow improved. i guess this is to do with the brown crap in the bottom of the tank and the clay ball dust...

im switching to flower tomorrow so im going to get like a clean wet cloth and wipe the crud out the best i can.

thoughts to self for upcomming AK47 grow ...

Piss off waterfarm and make a simple flood and drain set up with pearlite as medium
(waterfarm is awesome, just that if im growing with some awesome genetics over my bag weed i want to grow as safe and stable as i can)

Im not sure my medium sized pots are capable of holding the roots for my 6 foot tall sativa with 3 weeks left for flowering.

Dont use any clear pipes this time, they get dirty on the inside. i think this is cos of the light somehow.

Dont allow dead leaves to fall ontot he medium and rot. The plants dont like it.

Do not use water heater when not in winter.

Put the panda film up on the walls allready you lazy bastard.

Might be best if only growing one plant to switch from 600 watt light to 400 watt light.

Use cannas rhizotonic and cannazym before problems arise over after they arise.
