Tom Hill's PTK, Open Pollenation...Lil' help

Hope this is in the correct forum.

Recently I came across some of Tom's PTK (20) and figured the best thing to do was an open pollenation seed run.

What I really need is some input/ideas on a couple of items, for instance, how long should I veg for? Will/should I supplement with any particular nutes? What size containers would be best? At what point do I harvest?

Obviously the answers to some of those questions will be in flux as the process moves forward (I will do a thread for on-going input/advice)I'm just looking for some advice on the 'basics' at this point

I run in LC's mix, and up-pot to a 3-gal for flower.I have a wide variety of sizes (containers) to choose from.More than likely I will be purchasing a tent, an additional 600 and a fan/filter set-up.

I'm really hoping someone who's run her, or can just offer up advice on seed runs will chime in.

All advice/questions welcomed.

TIA :tiphat:

Who the hell just comes across 20 PTK? You must have friends in HIGH places, who also have good friends in high places!

great minds think alike SSM! i have 5 getting their veg on now. they are slower to veg than most and the fans are HUGE. i wanted to get some decent size out of them before i flip. they are at 4 weeks now and i will probably let them go another week or 2. they are vegging in half gallon containers and will have to get up potted sooner if they start to show defs.

i have another 30 or so beans in the pack still and will pop more asap. if i can assist your project in any way just give me a shout. cant wait for my christmas bud! hahaha

i would hit them with the pollen about 3 weeks in, maybe 4. if they are done in 8 weeks i would let them go 9 to allow seeds to ripen. mine will be flowered in 3 gallon pots.

best of luck man! :respect:

Did someone say PTK???
I'm blowing some now, I keep it in the line up in my grow.
PTK does not take light leaks well, so be careful of that. It really shines in out-crosses I've found.
I recently ran the last of my Tom Hill PTK. Ended up with 2 boys and 2 girls.I made more PTK to add to my other stock and a few new hybrids.

If they where my seeds, I'd grow them out and only keep the best females to breed with. Keep the males or clones of the males in veg and hit clones of the best females with all of the males. I say this because in my Tom Hill originals and the seeds I made, I've seen a good bit of variation. Some smoke way better than others.
Good luck with your project!! I'll be lurking

I`ve allways been interested in the PTK.
Wish you luck with your project :artist::tiphat:

Thank you, brother.Appreciate the words.

Haven't you heard?

My thought process is make as many beans, beans, beans as possible, then go through my normal gyrations with the selection process from there.

Again, awsome input LG and it's really appreciated.

Please do stop again to check in

Open pollenation or selective breeding? Always a tough choice, but I think with only 20 or so seeds to start with, it's better to do as you had planned with an open pollenation and then be able to move on to selective breeding when you have a gobful of seeds to work with.
I think that veg time and container size are more of a personal choice, but I would tend to agree with Phillthy because of their slower veg growth (not that I have grown any) that they get a bit more time before being flipped, but planning on being able to fit all of your containers in your breeding tent. 3 gallon may be too large to fit all 20 in there but I don't know what size tent you have?

Do you plan on doing a grow thread for these or will this be the thread? I would sure love to lurk around and watch.

I want to explain myself better
I understand you want a lot of seed. And If you put a little selective pressure on them now in your first run, I believe it could save you a lot of time down the road. I'm speaking from experience here, there are some bullshit phenos to be found. The males are hard to judge, but with the female, the traits we want are obvious. By using all the males you keep plenty of variation. And by removing the undesirable gals, you hopefully keep yourself from making several hundred mediocre seeds.
Besides, a 18 inch single cola plant will very easily give you 300 seeds. As long as you veg them up large enough, you'll have no shortage of seeds, no matter how many females you use. That, I'm sure of.

I planned on doing a largish PTK run this year, but planted a bunch of Deep Congo F2 instead. In 3 weeks I could start a batch of PTK. How about I plant 20 of them and we can compare notes??:tiphat:

And what is desirable ? What you may want and what another grower may want are two completely different things perhaps. Such as 18 inch colas :smoke: I don't like 'em they tend to get mold in the middle in my grow room. I wouldn't even care about yield really with the PTK, but that's my thing.
I say keep them all in and sort them out in the F2's :2cents: Whats to say you pick the best looking ones but they are the shittiest ones to smoke, not gonna know cause you won't be smoking them all till you make the seeds right.

BTW 10 of them beans are from HTC not TH. Your seeds, your choice, have fun mang and keep us updated :smoweed:

What's up, MM

I was thinking along those lines aswell, make beans and then have fun.

Appreciate the clarification on lineage

Hell, what do I know :D

If it were me, I wouldn't worry too much about selective pressure on the 1st filial generation. Best just to use the males you find, and perhaps do a bit of selection with the fems. Only in the 2nd filial generation are you going to really start effecting the subsequent populations with selective pressures.

Just my 2pfennigs, but you could run your progeny 12/12 from seed to weed out stinkers. Although when the pressure is getting close to stabilizing, full grows will be required. Including side grows to discern the worth of the males.
Working with an IBL, my biggest concern would be to weed out stinkers (if there are any), as the strain should be fairly stable to begin with.

I know what is desirable to me.... SSM will have to make his own decisions about what is desirable. How will he know which ones are the shittiest?? You grow them and smoke them. I like to take cuttings of plants so that I can grow them again in the future.
18 inch cola is just a reference for how many seeds I know can can be produced with this strain.

That's what I said.

PTK is not an "IBL" I think Tom called it a "relatively unworked Pakistani landrace"
Selection is necessary.

If it that is the case, it is probably best to use everything in the pack in the population, don't you think? I tend to look at females the same as males from the F1, and you really don't see much of what will be with them. If we don't want to miss anything in the F2, we need to have the largest Ne numbers possible I think. Most especially with a diverse landrace variety. In fact, if I were to find something special in a landrace, I would be thinking far more numbers than a pack or two of seeds. (shrug)

Sorry, I didn't really mean to repeat what you had provided. Perhaps I should have just said I concur?

SSM I would stick to your original plan and do an open pollenation i wouldn't worry bout selection until you have enough beans to sort through m8, that's what i did and i got over 500 PTK beans to play with maybe more,,,I am very interested in seeing how this turns out...

So whats the difference between HTC beans and TH beans?

A generation or 2 of breeding, HTC received PTK Beans from TH (Tom Hill) and made their own selections...
