Tyvek pots....

I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts on using tyvek to make grow bags?

I know that tyvek only transfers air and very little moisture particles. I thought if you would take tyvek suits and make square grow bags out of them... this might be a good idea. Anyone have an opinion?

I don't mind the hassel. Grow bags don't breathe.... That's my goal with the tyvek. I want something that has more space then a pop bottle, but takes up no more space then a 3x3x6h area. More or less I want it to be exactly those dimensions.

Grow bags have holes in the bottom of them and the sides, so they most definitely breath. They've been proven to work time and time again.

You plan on building them yourself from a roll of tyvek from Home Depot? Or you're going to use mailers from the post office? Either way, sounds like a waste of time.

Good luck though

My problem is I can find grow bags that conform to my needs. I am after the 3x3x6... The closest I have found is 3x3x3... If you have some direction I am more the open for it. :)

make your own smart pots from landscape fabric...cheaper and easier i dont even stich mine i use a impulse sealer....make em custom size for your space if i was to buy 1.5gal namebrand smart pots or grow bags they would be too wide for me so i make them taller just not as wide.....

Paul-

I think what he wants is the advantages of "air pruning" without the associated cost (right?). Are you familiar with this idea? It's pretty cool, and people swear by 'em :) I bought some cloth Smart Pots, basically like felt, but they were $4 each, which adds up really fast. (I'm sure you can get them cheaper, but even at $2, that's still money.)

Oh, and about your comment on the giant grow bags, they sell ones that are the size of above-ground swimming pools for use outdoors :)

Lol, I am definitely looking for micro 3inx3inx6inH. I am definitely interested in the Air pruin. That's what I am going for here. I love Air Pots, and I am trying to see if they will custom or if I can DIY their idea to my needs.... I just don't see that happening.

So, tyvek? Air pruin? Impulse sealed custom made bags? Input?

Why not just give it a try with a few and see how you like it? :) Look at the material and decide if you think they will get enough air-flow to do the job, you could also run a few next to the smart pots and see how the growth compares (I love a good side-by-side comparison, but that's just me :D). The other concern I would have is weather or not the Tyvek will react to water or nutrient salts (clearly I'm no chemist, just thinking).

Tyvek is made of a ph neutral inert polymer. :) I am looking for the 3x3x6 aspect... that's the issue here. I would own about 50 air pots if they were 3x3 :p
I may have to do a side by side though.

I'm kind of with Aries on this one. I understand you wanting to have a custom size to maximize plants and overall yield, but you don't want to sacrifice your plants health and without a good side by side it might be hard to really compare or make sure your plants are getting enough air.

Just get a couple clones and try a couple different methods and decide which you like most :)

True, I am just trying to find someone who has actually used tyvek in this manner, or in any manner as a grow container for our purposes.

oh yeah another thing is you need holes in tyvek pots tyvek dont let water seep through easiy nor will roots penetrate it so i would scrap that idea...go to walmart/lowes get some landscape fabric (i use the green kind) a roll is about 10$ but you can make about 30 1gallons or more out of the roll and you can either stich the 2 sides together or use a impulse sealer/foodsaver(mine has a seal only button) and works great....and you can make these any size you want tall or wide....and it might help elevating the bags with some pepsi/coke 20oz bottle crates will help air prune more..(these come out round but you can pack them into a area with minimal space loss....
but heres a pic of mine today after installing some pepsi crates to make plants same height as hydro also some pics of my growbags(stitched version much slower at making 5 sided ones anyways as they dont stay square)....stay tuned and ill make a howto on making my version of smart pots
