Wanna Ask The Old Farts A Question?

Can some one please tell me exactly how to store the seeds ?? I read that you must allow fresh seeds to dry out a little then place them in plastic zip lock baggy and put that bag in a old film canister or old vitamin bottle with silca gel in the bottle/cannister then put that in the fridge where butter goes .. is this correct ??

store them in there packaging and put them in a rubbermaid container with rice or crackers to sop up any moisture and store them in your freezer this is how i've stored seeds for years and never had a problem in fact just cracked some beans that i got about 5 years ago and have been stored this way ever since i got them and i got exactally as many plants as i cracked :)

How do trichomes develop? Do their stalks develop with time?

Or will a trichome appearing to be a Capitate-Sessile, always remain that way?

I'm worried I don't appear to have a lot of stalked trichomes, which I'm lead to believe are the trichomes with the highest THC content. I made this observation through a 20X loupe. I really should take a cut and examine at home under my 100X pocket microscope, which I'll do next time I visit my plot (guerrilla, 51 lat, UK)

This is my first time growing anything and everything I know is from what I've read, no experience. Hopefully you guys with experience can help.:thank you:

first off that 20x loupe isnt really powerful enough to really get a good look at your trichs i'd suggest going to radio shack and buying a cheap lil 15 dollar mini microscope or at least a 30x loupe

i dont know anythign about one trichrome being stronger than the other i've always been under the impression thats determined on color of the actual resin cloudy amber clear stuff like this is what determines strength of the thc i might be wrong
and if this is your first time growing whoa pull back on them reigns your not a race horse yet :)
don't spend your time worrying about this nonsense spend your time on grasping the fundamentals the basics my first few as far as i dove into trichs was 20% amber the rest cloudy then its done and dont ever sit around waiting for all amber trichs if it does happen it'll be months after you should have harvested the plant :)
good luck man as a beginner i'd recommend not dwelling to much on high speed stuff like this your only hurting your potential to become a great grower instead of just another grower but to each there own good luck with everything i hope your enjoying growing and hope you become a great grower and not just another grower

Hey guys i've got 3 sogouda in nft 3rd week of veg about 20" high I fed them with house and garden aqua flakes A and B with guanokalong at an E.C of 1.1 PH 5.8 at the last res change, the next day i checked the EC and PH and the result was EC 0.4 and PH 6.8 is this normal? When i top up the res i have been topping up with an EC of 0.7 PH 5.2 (to allow for the ph increase and to lower it slightly) next change i will be changing to flowering feed (house and garden aqua flakes ) what EC would you recommend to start flowering?

Nope that's not normal. Just a few plants can't eat that much in one night. Check your meters, calibrate them make sure they are working right.

another 6 weeks or so and i'll be chopping some myself
i'm trying a lil experiment with humic acid
i'm feeding it to half my plants the other just normal regiment amended soil and carbs and molasses and water
if the humic acid does back flips for growth i'm all over it but i'm not expecting much who knows we;ll see
and Hemp that was a fem seed ehh but that was the one that still threw some nanners you had to cut off right still very nice bud i'm sure fem seeds grow greta bud i just havent had any luck with them and then from what i've read is mostly they dont have the vigor as a regular plant from seed other than this i'm at a blank on fem seed bro other than i'd never crack another again :)

Yeah that's the same strain but let me be clear about the nanners. The bud in the picture was fine, no nanners. It was the cola for one of ten plants. Those plants though I let grow tall and they ended up about 4 to 5 feet tall which meant that when the cola and secondary buds were done the lower growth was mostly a bunch of under developed popcorn buds that I allowed to go two weeks longer after I cut off the buds that were done and then lowered the light. The hermie growth I saw didn't really show up until I was almost ready to harvest those but at that point they were several weeks beyond normal harvest time and had experienced the shock of having the top half of the plants removed.

I also would like to address this term "nanners" What I see when normal male flowers are near ready to drop pollen, looks alot like a bunch of banana's and so I can see calling them "nanners". What I see in hermied plants looks more like horns then nanners so I really prefer to call it hermie growth but sometimes I say nanners as that is what others seem more used to.

We were wondering if anyone's aware of any work that's been done on splitting up the dark period each day (and, if so, how yield and potency were affected)? For example, alternating 6 hour periods of dark and light or some such. We're small scale, domestic, personal cultivators and we're thinking about using lights to provide heat for the home in the morning before work and in the evening afterwards. Cut down on our bills and make use of some of that wasted energy!

Any knowledge you've got to share'd be much appreciated.

It's not going to work, the dark period needs to be uninterupted for 12 hours to induce flowering, not just a total of 12 hours. Now during veg you could do that perhaps although I've never heard of anyone doing that and therefore can't predict the results with a great degree of accuracy. The plants should see the 6 hour dark period as something like a spring night and not flower but doing 6 light, 6 dark, 6 light, 6 dark, etc. would likely make them think they've experienced more days then they have. That shouldn't have much effect though, people have been known to keep mother plants for clones, in veg for years.

That will work although the zip lock baggy seems redundent I'd just leave it out and use only the film can. Also you don't have to use silica gel I've also heard of people using uncooked rice grains to serve the same purpose. I also don't think it matters if it goes where the butter goes, I think the main idea is to have it refrigerated and in a place where it won't be immediately seen by anyone opening the refrigerator.

If you plan on using them within a few months to a year you probably don't need to do anything but store them in a cool dry place. The silica, the air tight/light tight container and refrigerating is more for long term storage. I've had seeds fall out of the plant and start growing in the pot right next to the plant they came from, no drying, no zip locks or cannisters, no refrigeration. Generally though you would allow seeded bud to at least dry if no dry and cure, and then clean them out from the bud. Not because it's mandatory but it's just easier. Also some seeds might be almost done but not quite, if so they will often finish off ripenning while the bud is drying

Yeah 20x is a bit weak, a 30 x would be the lowest I'd want for checking out trichomes. I'm not sure about your question though but I can say I've never seen any evidence of one type changing to another type. How far into flowering are you? Capitate-sessile trichomes typically form early on whereas the stalked ones come later, usually around week 4 - 5 on 8 week flowering strains.

Good morning my dearest old farts!:tiphat:
Thank you for finding the time&will to help us, younger twats, in this green adventure:thank you:
Just a couple of questions on the same subject
Wich kind of bio-chemical processes get started when the polinization happens?
What happens within the female plant that starts the seeds formation?
Of course that i know that all starts when the male polen is grabed by the female pistills but what i´m looking to find out about is what happens in the female plant.Does the polinization starts a chemical process or is it a enzymatic,bio-celular or even some other one that i´m not even aware....?:comfort:
What´s the relation between polinization and THC contents?
Is there any bypass procedure that could avoid the seeds formation even if polinization ocurs?
I hope i´ve made sense with my questions:comfort:
Many thanks for all your input:thank you:
Peace&Light to us all:ying:

I've heard that when the pollen makes contact with the hairs there is a chemical reaction that is transmitted from the point of contact, down thru the hair and inside the flower where the seed forms. I didn't hear that from an expert though with the ability to determine if this is exactly what is happening so I can't really say if it's chemical, enzymatic or bio-cellular. To me it doesn't matter though because experience has taught me that when fresh pollen touches the pistils (hairs) of a healthy flower a seed will form in that flower if the plant lives long enough for the seed to do so.

I'm unaware of any direct relationship between pollinization and THC content. There is a relationship in that a pollinated plant will devote more energy and resources to forming seeds then they will to forming resin but THC is just a part of the resin so it's an indirect relationship, less resin means less THC.

As far as I'm aware there is no stopping a seed from being formed once a female plant is pollinated except maybe if you cut of the flowers but then what would be the point of growing the plant then?

i've nevr heard anything about the trich stuff other than what i originally pointed out never got that far into it and what i do know has always been enough info to get me to where i want to be when i harvest but interesting enough if you could post up some links on this info that would be great i'd like to read about it a lil
i just started using humic acids on one half of my garden i'm curious what the hype is about it is it really any better so i got 3 i'm giving humic acid and three not getting it i'm using advanced nutes brand unfortunately it was the fereshest humic acid i was able to get which i know with humic acid this is very important plus it was the strongest besides humboldt roots but theres no way i'm paying 90 bucks for like 12 ounces are you crazy :)
still figured i'd give it a try thougth ya know if anyone knows anythng about this please give me a heads up i've heard of foliar feediong with it but this hgumic acid is alot sronger than the stuff they foliar feed with it's typically a o.1 or o.01 % solution where as to the one i have is a 0.86% 1% is the highest and thats the humboldt roots thats all it is is humic acid period anyways any input on this would be nice its something new for me and my expierences always willing to give somethign a fair shor but i always only do half i wanna see results ya know

Thanks Billy. When I think of something, i've got to research it, however in-depth. It's the curiosity in my nature, which I have trouble controlling. You're right, I should slow down - I just can't.

I got my information from Trichomes 101 - OG FAQ.

Trichomes 101 - OG FAQ said:
Cannabinoids are most abundant in the capitate-stalked gland which consists of a tier of secretory disc cells subtending a large non-cellular secretory cavity. During flowering the capitate glands that appear on the newly formed plant parts take on a third form. Some of the glands are raised to a height of 150 to 500 micron when their stalks elongate.

Looks like I've answered my own question. I've made bold the words significant to my question. I mustn't have digested all that info first time round.

Luckily I have a 60-100X pocket microscope that works wonders for $5. I just didn't have it with me and didn't consider taking a cutting of a leaf near a bud to take home with me for examination. I'll be doing this on my next visit.

I have a feeling I'll have to harvest before amber, just be satisfied with cloudy. The weather is turning poor where I am, with 90%+ RH, a lot of rain and 40MPH gusts, all to expect over the coming week.

I'd say they were over half way through flowering. How many weeks i'm not certain would be a good indication to their progress, they've developed at a slower rate due to the low light levels I've been getting in the UK.

The two that are furthest ahead were put into flower in doors and put outside beginning of August. Since they've had they're PK13/15 & Cannaboost, they've really filled out. I still want to give them as much time as possible, but it's a fine line between getting premature bud, perfect bud (for the environment they've been grown in) and moldy bud.

LoL, Panoramical it'll settle down or start to once you've harvested a time or two after not growing for almost 5 months I kinda got the jitters as well. More over the fuzz than anything. :)
Deffinatelly take this time to concern yourself with more of the basics and fundementals. This is why i chosde to start out by using a amended soil not to much to worry about other than wateringh and i could focus more attention onn understanding how the soil works and how the plant it self grows and what not. I'm sure you understand this. You seem like an intelligent enough guy to pick this up.
For surely you need at least a 30x loupe though thats bare minimums. The radio shack mini microscope starts at like 60x to 100x and myself have found it to be better than any loupe I've ever bought. I bought a spendy jewelers loupe had three different lenses I could change out from 10x to 30x and really only thing I found it useful for. Was finding sexing signs 3 days before I would be able to just see them with my eye so not real handy. The radio shack mini microscope click on the light and your good to go.

However, some people on this thread don't like the cheap microscop either I found it to be great.

Well it sounds like you're still in the early stages of resin development which is why I was asking. The kind of trichomes you've been seeing is normal for the early stages. As you've discovered in what you read and made bold, later on these will elongate more into the kind of trichome you were expecting to see more of. I usually don't even bother with looking at trichomes until a week or so from what should be harvest based on the plant's flowering time. As for color actually if you're wanting the most THC then you want the trichomes to be mostly cloudy. That's when the THC content is at it's peak. Amber is a sign of degradation and occurs when the THC breaks down into lesser cannabinoids. Those cannabinoids have effects though and is why people strive to have some amber.

I'm one of those people. I bought one from radio shack a few years ago and then turned around and gave it away to a friend a few months later. They work good but they do their best job when you can remove a piece of the plant and check it out. I like loupes better because I can read the triches on the plant without cutting anything off much better with a loupe then with the microscope. Also I got big fingers which made working with the adjustment dials a pain. Really though now a days I don't use a loupe or a microscope. I use my digital camera. I can see things much more clearly, look at and evaluate a much bigger area and I can examine it at my leisure on a nice computer screen.

I have a Radio shack mini microscope, a couple loups, and a true chemists microscope. But, I also find that what is easiest for me is to take Macros of the bud and look at the Trichomes on my plasma. Dont even have to take a sample or disturb the plant

Nice Pic by the way HempKat

ya but not everyone can afford a 2000 dollar get up to photo trichs :) after camera body ring flash and macro lense your looking about that if i'm not mistaken the lil macro feature on pint n shoot cams don't work or it dont work on my point n shoot
I don't even bother looking at trichs anymore till its harvested and dried ready to smoke 60 days and timber period time to roll in the next :)

A camera 3X better then what I used in that picture can be had for under $400 maybe even under $300 on ebay. I'm talking one that is point and shoot too, no special lenses or attachments although I do use a hand held mini led flashlight to help with up close lighting but you can get those for under $20 at the hardware store.

I have a decent point n shoot cannon power shot A480 AiAf 10.0 megapixel and my macro function works like total crap i should take a pic with it and post it
it just looks like a fuzzy pic ya know just one thats just a minute amount out of focus i'm willing to bet thats because i'm not using in on stationary objects or on a tripod maybe i dunno
we paid about 200 online for the camera or something like that maybe a lil less
but man my brother makes me mad bastard gots all the fixings ring flash macro camera body i just wanna well nm
