Does anyone grow in an apartment?

I have a grow with a 250 mh and a 150 hps that's going in my closet in my apartment. Is that too risky or am I just trippin? This is my first apartment lol.

you are just trippin,chill man.
i assume the closet is big enough to walk into?
if so 400w will be no bother.

Few key factors besides the 1st rule of growing... don;t tell anyone.. :) :joint:

Smell, noise, stealthiness are huge in apt complex's from my exp.. Also, you will have to assume that the manager MAY need to come into your apt, and how would you hide the grow? Remember and depends on which state country but in usa most places give a 24hour notice or we are coming in because of fire/flood/other emergency. etc...

In my past apt I grew in cabs...4 ladies ususally... 400w (switchable ballast) and vented into the attic with a carbon filter. No worries.. Did this multiple times in diff apt and townhouses. :)

Being on the 2nd floor of an apt is better too. Makes it tougher for prying eyes! :)

Happy growing, good luck! :joint::canabis:

depends on your situation. if a pipe bursts in the floor above you... crews of people will come in regardless of if you're home or not. keep that in mind. apartment growing is always a risk against the highly unlikely yet totally possible.

What's the best way to cover smell? I always have inscents burning lol. But I do live on the second floor! I have 4 also but they aren't in cabs.

I've been running 5K watts going in a basement studio of a 4 unit building for almost 6 years. Let me tell you, it's a pain in the ass dealing with smell, noise, & stealthiness as kp^ mentioned. I've got 2 carbon filters but I've still got smell issues when trimming. I also have noise issues with one of my fan/filters blowing out onto the back patio. My yard used to be overgrown with bushes but they recently cleaned it up and put a patio in, so now the noise echoes off the cement and my yard is being used more by the tenants. So now I use a speed controller on my fan/filter to adjust the noise level outside as needed. And luckily I'm related to the person upstairs so the noise they hear up there isn't an issue, but it would be a serious issue if I wasn't so close with the tenant.. Also, I grow in an illegal in-law unit, which actually helps me. My landlord pretends that no one is living down here. Luckily I live in CA and have all my legal paperwork in order. So, when he insisted on coming into my apt to check on a water leak, I had to come clean with what was going on (I had previously told him I had a dark room for photography). He said, "That's cool, you're legal and your electrical is professionally done. If anyone asks me I will say I know nothing about anyone living or doing anything down there." So now I give him a fat sack every now and then ;)

So, after this experience, when I move it will be into a detached unit!

CHANGE YOUR LOCK!!!

I've lived in complexes where the maintainance people would come in and snoop around your apartment if they thought you were gone without any kind of warning or notice. I caught two of them once because I was sleeping in, and they just let themselves right in like they owned the place after I didn't answer their knock.

Basically, it's cheap insurance.

The noise thing may be an issue too, even just oscillating fans create enough noise for your neighbors to hear 'something'. They may not know there's a grow, but if you share (paper thin) walls with people, they're going to know 'something' is up, and they'll be watching trying to figure out what it is. If you smoke a joint outside they'll put 2 and 2 together pretty easily. If you're going to do hydro, that'll be even louder. I'd say, if possible, do a fat grow there, and then use the money to move to a house with a better area for growing.

That's how I did it ;)

Damn well here's how my setup is. It's not in a cab or anything its just out in the open. Its in the closet in the bathroom thats in my room. So hopefully no one walks in. Our neighbors know we smoke and shit they smoke too. And the people who work in the front office love us and said we have zero complaints and I don't think they would come in our room. At least I hope.

It's not ideal, but hey, I did it for years...

Like others said, always change the locks, or at least have the grow itself locked up. I'd rather have my landlord bugging me for locks than for plants...

Word of real wisdom here. I'm 51 yrs old and have had my share of troubles with the law. In every single case, it was not anything I did directly that got me in trouble. Namely, you can't control circumstances most of the time. Odds are you WILL eventually get caught growing if you live in an apartment. It will happen. By law the folks that manage the property have access to ALL units, at any time. You are asking to be busted. No one is that slick...not even the, I been doing it for years guys...you will get busted. Don't risk your future on such a risky venture. You would do better to opt for a guerilla grow, and even that has substantial risk. Buy yourself a home and then you have a greater measure of security. If you can't manage either of those two options, then wait till you grow up some. I would never tell anyone that it is ok to do that. Unless it was someone I didn't like.

Do you think that this is still true for people with a MMJ card? I'm in an apt, I only run half my legal plants and a small 400 watt in an enclosed tent with a nice carbon filter which leaves me with no smell. Do I still have anything to worry about? Not being sarcastic, genuinely interested, thanks!

look at your lease. I am not sure what state you are in but all my leases in California were 24 hour minimum warning before entry. Unless of course there was a fire or a flood.

If you have a MMJ recommendation you will stand a much better chance against the law. I am not 100% about your landlord. I don't think they can kick you out for it if you are leasing. Month to month is another story.

I'm leasing, there are no provisions in my lease except that no illegal activities can occur, pretty common. I guess since it is still technically federally illegal they could have qualms. They do have to give notice except in an emergency. Its vented below the house and in a walkin closet I can have totally closed, and can't be heard. I always pay my rent on time and am usually ahead a couple hundred bucks, also I've never had a noise complaint etc.

I live in colorado, pretty MJ friendly here. I've got all my paperwork in order, hopefully if something does happen and they protest they'll give me a chance to close up shop. I really enjoy the process of growing and MMJ really is a replacement for other medicines with harsh side effects for me, so I don't want to give it up, but its not worth problems with the law at least for me.

i did 2-600's in a 2 bedroom flat, for 9 months...watch your odor, and consider the carpet that might grow mold, or the pest it may harbor. Humidity can ruin drywall, heat can build up, and make hot summers unbearable. Keep organized, stay clean, conservative, and stealthy.

Don't listen to bad advice!

Don't listen to bad advice!

I have seen so many posts on this thread, mostly by growers with a "grow cheap" mentality. When I was researching apt. growing (something I can't believe you didn't do before you started your grow), I see posts in all the forums, saying that they used cheap methods to mask pot smell, rather than spending more.

If you do get busted, and unfortunately when I see the stupidity to not even research this subject, it will happen. How much will it cost you to lawyer up, etc.? Much more than the few thousand to do a proper and safe grow!

I spent alot of time researching similar apt. grows. Noise will get you, so insulated ducting really helps with that (along with my fans speed controller.). The grow tent has waterproof, double layered floors, and saved me a few times with spills, intially. I am on the 2nd floor of a duplex, and have grown here for 7 yrs. They don't do yearly inspections.

When I first set up my closet, I tried to not use a quality carbon filter, and it almost got me busted. I work from my home, so luckily I was here to stop the maintenance man from entering to the top of my steps (my downstairs neighbor had water leaking, and he thought I was the one who called.). But the tent had c/filter, that was worthless!

Remember that being around your plants 24/7, you tend to lose your sesnsitivty to the pot smell! Don't lsiten to morons with a few grows under their belts, who advise badly, based on lack of $! You might end up as cell mates, IMO! potluvr1
