Activated Carbon for filters

Stores (Aquarium, pet, wal-mart) sell it at $5-$10 a pound. Ebay is closer to $2 a lb

petco, petsmart, or any other large pet store will carry active carbon. its in the fish section

water treatment carbon IS NOT the right carbon for your filters. People always post this & it is irritating. Yes, it works but no where near as good as vapor phase activated carbon. Don't buy the shit at walmart or any aquarium or pet store. Odor control is a very serious matter...so I'd suggest getting the correct carbon from the get go. Your carbon is one of those 'things' that must be done right.

I was kinda iffy about that. Thanks for clearing that up. Do you know of any good suppliers? I know horticulturesource.com has it, but it's like a $100 bucks + shipping on like 35 or 40 pounds.

Actually, for that link it would be about $40 for shipping, for me anyways. I'll keep looking cause I need a good source also.

I don't recall what pellet size I have bought before. I think 3mm.
I know it was slightly smaller then what comes by default in a Can filter.

Aquarium charcoal works great.
Vapor phase charcoal is pellet shaped. Pellets decrease surface area and increase airflow. Both of which decrease adsorption.
Aquarium or granulated charcoal has a much greater surface area, slowing airflow. Both of which increase adsorption.

I use a mixture of kitty litter crystals and aquarium carbon. I started using them after changing my carbon in my filter. It seemed saturated with moisture from the grow and was not absorbing odor anymore. I did research and found kitty crystal (silica) absorbs moisture (and odor)very well to keep the carbon dry. almost a year and not even a whiff of odor. I have to run a humidifier now.

I have granulated vapor phase carbon in a phresh filter...as was my last filter before...it was granulated. Vapor Phase does not mean pelletized.

Well I have learned something new already today from that wiki link. And I'm not even finished my first cup of coffee.
Does activated carbon lose its effectiness in time if no air is ventilated though it?
I growed about 5 years ago and i have the same filter left. At that time i used it only for like 2 months and then i sealed it to plasticbag. I have the same filter installed now but idont know is it working anymore. I think the size of my filter is about 50cm long and about 25cm diameter.

From my experience I believe so.. I have let a sealed filter (plastic wrap a Can filter comes in) sit for up to 1.5 years and have not noticed a decrease in its length of usage.
I believe to increase the likely hood that the filter will be as effective is to keep it in an area with as low of a humidity as possible. I believe any plastic wrap or bag is still letting air in slowly over time.
