90W LED?

I do a little organic micro grow in my closet, just for myself. I use a 150 HPS to flower with CFLs to veg and supplement. I use a 4" inline Vortex to vent. But it's been just too friggin' hot lately to run that stuff. I have central air but those lights just get that closet cooking.

So I was thinking of trying an LED. But the vendors here want way too much. $275 for a little 90W puke? No way.

I'm willing to go $150. Ebay has some for that. But the terminology just confuses me. Plus in such a new technology there's a good chance of getting ripped off. I think a UFO light means it's round. But spectrums are all over the place 7:1:1 means what? Are 6W bulbs that much better than 2W when that weak? Do I want tri-spectrum, quad spectrum, or something else. Full spectrum maybe? The nanometers spectrums are really confusing. I sort of figured out Kelvin spectums that are good for CFLs, but these are different.

I'd just as soon not get ripped off. Maybe I'll just wait till Oct. or Nov. when it starts cooling off. But those LEDs sure are tempting. Can any kind hearted soul help me out a little here? I firmly believe in that KISS principle, but that don't seem to work here. Would those Ebay deals work alright for a little grow? Or maybe I should just wait it out here in dry-land. Grew 2 boys then killed a girl I was just ready to flower out in my last 2 runs over the winter. "Gloom, despair, and agony on me. If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all. Gloom, despair, and agony on me. "

Cjeck out pinstripe's DIY LED I think it was 22 watts of dissipation. You could probably build one up to ~40watts of dissipation using just one driver at ~450mA for a reasonable price.

I did a small micro with a htg 90w ufo. The problem is that they do kick out some heat and you can't put a cool tube on it. A cool tubed 70w hps in the same box ran cooler. As far as how good they work, I don't know , I have moved on to 600w hps for medicine . The UFO is going to go over Basil.

Can you cool tube that 150? get a oil lamp glass chimney from a craft store for less than 10 bucks and make one. There is a DIY thread some where on I.C. about it. My 90 watt UFO will probably yield about the same as a 150 hps. A non cooled 150 hps will be hotter than a UFO for sure.

I am on my third UFO 90 grow. And I am glad I purchased from a reputable US dealer (Sunshine Systems). Twice one of the ballasts blew, and they replaced at no charge. I believe they now install heavier duty ballasts. You won't get that from E-Bay deep discount sellers. Inferior ballasts might also be the reason why off-shore LEDs do not meet output specs.

Tyrone 420: I have investigated similar lighting. Plants havemuch different light spectrum requirements than humans.

If you are going to use LEDs keep the lights much closer- no more than 12" above and enclose with reflective mylar or windshield protector to concentrate the light. Since CFLs are cheap consider supplementing with small ones below the canopy.

The biggest issue is bulb life/replacement. Unlike most lighting, they are not field replaceable, and I am unaware of any manufacturers offering such service.
