What exactly happens if you are unemployed and don't pay taxes?

Okay so with unemployment being sky high (myself included in that stat currently) I see thru google searches that you must make $8,950 (correct me if I'm wrong) to HAVE to file Federal income taxes.

I can't seem to find anything regarding City or School taxes, though. Let's say you don't own or rent a home, that you just "live with someone" and don't have a job but for the past 5 years you've paid both Federal, State and City/School taxes, what are the laws regarding State and City/School taxes if you don't have a job or make under $8,950 the whole year?

I don't see how the state or the city can force you to pay tax if you have no income...but then again, we do live in a pretty fucked up society so I wouldn't doubt it.

I imagine that lots of people are in the same boat, so it's not as unusual as it normally would be. however, since the fed govt is desperate for money, too, who knows how closely the irs is going to be looking to find out if people are cheating. . . . It's really hard to say. My best friend is an accountant, so I'll ask her what she thinks the next time I talk to her. In the meantime, if you know anyone who is an accountant, you should ask them.

If you don't file, you won't get your payday. Making the minimum amount usually nets that taxpayer a check. Yeah, they will get more money than they put in. It comes from the rest of us who actually do put in. So really, taxpayer is a bit of a misnomer. Tax consumer, perhaps?
And, if a stimulus check gets doled out, you will miss it too, as they use the returns of the previous year for the dole out.
But heck, just hang on and we can start to riot when the money runs out for these state sponsored giveaways, fortifying of the state, and dole outs of others money, ala Greece.

Good thing in the US is, we have lots of rich people that we can keep taking from. They won't miss it. Hell, maybe we could just put it into one big pot and all dip from it as we will? None of us would have to do much at all in the way of taxes at that point...except for the rich bloke. We will need him to keep raking it in for us. And I'm sure he will keep obliging, especially when he sees all the people that he actually is helping to subsist.
But if he doesn't, then we will have to increase his rate of pay. We sure can't have people on the lower rungs doing anything to help.
The bottom tier folks were placed there, yes? We can't force them to do something that they were simply chosen not to do, right? No opportunities ever existed or ever will for most all of us, correct?

It's called "income tax" because it's paid on income. If you have no income you don't pay. You still need to file a return though. State and local taxes are different depending on the laws where you live but still if you have no income how can you pay?
Wait until tax time then figure it out and see. Most places have someplace where you can get free help filling out your forms if you need it. You're in the same boat as a lot of people so hang in there bro.

I'm laughing my ASS off...you're all just beating around the bush...too afraid to name names...

Isn't society grand! How we so willingly allow ourselves to be constrained. How passive aggressive we've become.

Most of the revenue local governments get come in the form of property taxes which aren't based on income but rather the value of the property. Given the state of the housing market and declining property values there's a good chance you'll be paying less this year then the previous years when you were working, of course if that happens then the following year they'll change to rate on property taxes to recapture what they lost from declining value.

Go to new jersey, you might just feel like you took a wrong turn to india.

Don't know if it still applies or not but Unemployment benefits used to be taxed at the end of the year on Federal Tax returns. Might want to check in on that.

This absolutely true. Unemployments benefits are considered taxable income. They give it and they take it......................

Someone should email the IRS and say "i rob liquor stores to make money, is this to be treated as income?" The reply would have us in stitches!

All these guesses aren't going to do you much good. You need to visit www dot irs dot gov. Unlike in the past, these days the site is a lot more user-friendly and the average person is much more likely to find an answer you can understand.

One thing I recall from the site re unemployment is: they can't put a lien on your bank account to collect unpaid taxes as long as your only income is from unemployment compensation.

Of course, now that I'm typing that, that sounds really naive... as in, "that's how it's supposed to work", and as a bureaucratic machine, they could easily attach your bank acct anyway, "oops!", and it would be on you to find (and pay for) a way to fight it in court. So proceed with caution!

My main concern was with state, city and school taxes.

And yes, in my state (PA) you pay city and school taxes regardless if you own a home or not. I even have the little piece of paper from the city telling them i owed them $50 some dollars from 2008...

I'm fighting unemployment currently, drafting my appellate brief to the commonwealth court. Left voluntarily due to the job causing serious various medical conditions...

Jobs causing serious various medical conditions would be a workmens compensation issue.
It will be much harder to make any claims, or headway, since you have quit before you got the WC ball rolling. Also, unless the employer agrees to you qualifying for unemployment benefits, it will be hard to get them.
I'd be having my lawyer draft the brief. You will need him.
