What's new

will these led's replace my 1000w hps?

I have not herd any info on LEDS higher then 1 -2 watts in any grow light fixture. Are these DIY LED kits? No web site on who makes these. There is nother else on the market that I have herd of or to compair them to. I have only one referace to judge with there sre no test grows with these higher poer LEDS? .

Ceramic Metal Halide guys... dunno why people don't consider them much... its either HPS or LED these days... They have an excellent spectrum(the best imho) and barely emit heat. I have mine in a cooltube running 24/7 and at anytime I can touch the cooltube indefinitely. Their only disadvantage is that they come in 400w max and need a magnetic coil ballast instead of digital...but well worth it, and you don't need to pay thousands(bulb+ballast will put you at 100-120$ max, cooltube for 20-30$ depending... still.. quite a difference)...

The abundance of UV output they have is nifty in flowering (uv encourages thc/resin production, scientifically proven). Now my last grow didn't go as planned for me to know its true potential, but even at week 2 of flowering the plants were COVERED with resin, with the little bud sites they have.

I know ur asking about leds, but just throwing this out there as an alternative.
Cheers mate

ps: They (atleast the philips cmh, which are the only ones that one should buy btw) also have 80% luminance retention over their lifetime, quite better than your average HID.

OLDMAC uses the TI brand...
SOTF420 uses LUMIGROW...

Cyber echo,

An entirely different discussion, Ceramics are already widely known and need no introduction, besides they asked for LED references. We already determined HID wins any cost vs performance races.... for now

its not just he heat. the cost is also important to run them. if the hps cost the same as the Ceramic to run you dont gain anything. I have herd he ceramic bulbs are twice the cost as hps bulbs?

Again, bro I would wait for LEDs of any brand to become cheaper.

Talk with SOTF420, he uses multiple Lumigrows.
My 500 watt unit is roughly the same as a 800w HID in regards to output.

Thats very interesting the the TI uses water cooling. does this mean they get that hot?

The 600 watts units use water while the 300 watt are air cooled. Also the 600 watts are 230 volts only.
Actually I have an old TI 300 watt that is not being used in this grow.
Next grow I will use it instead.

Dude, you cut me to the quick!

Of course there will be pics !

BTW I don't know about heat from the 600 watts, never used one. But I suspect form may be a factor as they are bars instead of squares. Don't hold me to that right?

Hammer,, sent u a msg in a rep... didn't wanna continue the cmh discussion here, and sorry again mates, just threw it out as a 3rd option for the guy asking...

once upon a time i was told Wattage = Heat by "Energy Star" CFL Reps...
Reps are salespeople. I have a masters in Electrical Engineering with over 40 years experience.

That is only true in heaters. Heat in lights is the product of inefficient operation. In other words the heat is the energy not used by light production, therefore wasted. BTW there's a lot more heat produced by HID's

Actually... no, he's not a salesperson. He made zero dollars off sales. While you were getting your eletrical engineering stuff i've been doing retail. A rep is much different then a sales person. This was of a piece of material he was handing out to read.

And to a degree... He's right. More watts equals more heat no? Seems just like a generalization made for the public to more easily understand... that was his job after all...

to all that say leds are 2 expensive

surelly your first crop would more than cover the cost of the led units?
then your freerolling with cheaper electric bills for next 40k -50k hours?

am i wrong? is it not really this simple

LEDS suck

LEDS suck

Bought 2 300watt pannels and had mold problems from them not being able to penetrate the canopy or create any heat. Threw 2 600's over them and it was like night and day. Spent 2600 for the two of them, worst money ive ever spent on equipment. DON'T DO IT!

I expected nothing but an argument with no back up from you, and I have not been disappointed.

not so my friend, i've seen 400watt HPS bulbs for more
than $100.00 and ATL sells 400watt CMH bulbs for $52.00
so half the price not twice the price.

actually, a rep is a salesman whether you see him make
a sale or not, if you were to see his pay structure you
would agree. (i was in sales for more'n 30 years, as a
lowly sales 'rep' and as a more advanced 'rep' who earned
a piece of what the lowly sales 'rep's sold)

and to your second point, no he isn't right, or he is right
for the wrong reasons as more watts equals more heat
because of the inefficiency of the watts in question, the
fact is, ALL of that heat is wasted energy.

btw, anyone with a masters in electrical engineering
probably knows what he's talking about so might be
worth listening to.

peace, and stay safe, SOG
