Thrips in organic garden?

Dear ICMag.

My seedlings have just turned two weeks (from soil contact), and I have some problems. They have suffered from underwatering very early (after being planted in a wet soil). I have two problems, very likely to be related.

1. Small white spots have been spotted, on the plants’ leaves; mostly their first true leaves, and less on the second set. The spots glimmer in bright light, such as when using an LED microscope close. 5 out of 9 plants are affected, one is very stunted. Included for identification are two pictures:

2. I have several times found a small golden bug about 1mm long, crawling on leaves. They are pretty small, and only managed to catch a small glimpse under a microscope. They have dark eyes, and they do not fly from my encounters. They are shining, almost as if it is a shell. I have found 4 in all.

I’m pretty sure it is thrips thanks to grandmesajoker from the chat. I would like that confirmed, and as a followup question: I have a hard time finding spinosad containing organic products, and I was wondering if anyone knew if Bio Protect from GHE would kill them easily? I am European, and cannot find any products containing spinosad within range it seems.

Thanks for reading, and any assistance you may be able to lend!

Best Regards
GHUA

Seriously? Nobody can confirm Thrips?

Anyone know an OMRI organic cure I can actually get in Europe?

look for a product thats made of spinosad 100% organic i just used it on my plants for thrips with 1/4 of the dose & they're all gone this stuff is amazing!!! depending on how bad infestation is they will be gone anywere a few hours to a few days. Common names that spinosad is marketed under are “Monteray Garden Insect Spray”, “Bulls-eye”, “Entrust”, and more.

Spinosad (pronounced "spin-OH-sid") is derived through the fermentation of a naturally occurring organism. Spinosad is derived from a naturally occurring soil dwelling bacterium called Saccharopolyspora spinosa, a rare microorganism reportedly collected from soil in an abandoned rum distillery on a Caribbean Island in 1982 by a vacationing scientist. It has not been found in nature since that time, and was subsequently described as a new species.

Spinosad works by contact and by ingestion. Contact occurs either by direct application to the insect or by movement of the insect onto a treated surface. Ingestion occurs as insects feed on treated substrate (such as foliage). While control via contact is highly effective, control via ingestion is 5 - 10 times more effective.

Spinosad has a unique mode of action that is different from all other known insect control products. Spinosad causes excitation of the insect nervous system, leading to involuntary muscle contractions, prostration with tremors, and finally paralysis.
Spinosad has several attractive features when compared to most other insect pest control products:
- It is derived through the fermentation of a naturally occurring organism;
- It is highly active at low use rates;
- It is active by ingestion and contact exposure;
- It has less impact on certain predatory beneficial insects; and
- It is active by a mechanism unique among known insect pest control compounds.
- It has quicker speed of control;
- It has no special handling or use restrictions.

Spinosad, with its unique characteristics, does indeed fit a class of its own, and offers fantastic results for the hobby gardener. No other naturally sourced material has its' combination of excellent contact and residual efficacy on target pests and safety to beneficials, aquatic organisms, and mammals.
Spinosad-based products have been registered in more than 30 countries for control of termites, ants, thrips and much more. Common names that spinosad is marketed under are “Monteray Garden Insect Spray”, “Bulls-eye”, “Entrust”, and more. There are retailers that sell these products online or through mail order…you can have this product shipped to anywhere in the country…or world.

I will third(?), fourth(?) spinosad for organic pest control, especially for thrips.

Its an active ingredient found in many products including Captain Jacks Dead Bug Brew, and Monterey Garden spray as mentioned above.

One application usually does it for me, but one time I needed two, several days apart.

Monterey Garden insect spray for the win. Easy to order from Amazon too.

Unfortunatly I cannot seem to find it in the european amazon, or indeed any european shop. It puzzles me, and leaves me pretty screwed since Im organic. I suppose I have to turn to predator insects then.

Thanks for your help all of you!

If anyone knows where I could buy this product in europe, please post, or PM :tiphat:
