Why is weed measured in grams & then ounces???

Still buying eighths (3.5g - £20/25) and quarters in the uk, it's pretty rare to come across a dealer selling grams, apart from kids maybe. We use both systems though generally.

It's a actually quite funny that we would weigh out an 1/8 as 3.5g on a scale then give it to them as an eighth rather than just 3.5g

we get "25's" and "50's" which correspond approx to 1/16th's and 1/8th's but use the old imperial system for quarters halves ounces and pounds...even though we use the metric system for everything else...(mostly) down here in OZ.

For me the Metric system is far superior.
Everything makes sense.

1000 litres = 1 cubic metre ≈ 1 tonne of water
1 litre = 1 cubic decimetre ≈ 1 kilogram of water
1 millilitre = 1 cubic centimetre ≈ 1 gram of water

10mm=1cm
10cm=1dm
10dm=1m

1000grams=1kg
1000kgs=1t

Also temperature.
Water boils at 100°C freezes at 0°C.

When in America

Water boils at 212°F freezes at 32°F

Yeh i'm with Dr_Tre. Wen i started smoking in high school the most you could ever buy at one time was 3 grams. Unless the dealer knew you really well you might get a half bag (1/2 ounce). Grams was the only measurement i ever dealt with until i started growing my own. Now it's an ounce or no dice haha.

I think JacuzziSplot might be on the money. I guess grams was the only way to measure small amounts on a scale back in the day. Now we have digital scales that measure things to the hundredth of a gram! Crazy.

PS. Classic sources, g0vnaa. Made me chuckle :)

I am always confused with these ounces and lbs(?), which are used in this forum quite much. Need to use google or something else to translate them to understandable form. :D

Yeh memphis man was right on the money with wat i meant to say. It just always confused me why we use grams up until the first ounce when everyone could just be using the metric system exclusively.

Anyone know who decided this way of measuring?

US imperial units are actually slightly different from the original British imperial system they're derived from (which started in 1842), just to confuse things abit more.

I think the main difference is liquid measurements. Do you buy pints of beer at a bar? A pint in the US is 473ml, but a UK pint is 568ml... :dunno:

Metric works for everything but liquids imo.

Barkeep I'll have sixty three centiliters of beer please!

What ?!?!?! Liters work fine.
A bottle of beer is half a liter in my country and I think it quite nice as a measurement.

the real fun in the UK started back when the switch was made at distro level from pounds to kilos but no one bothered to tell the poor sods buying half pounds/9 bars... suddenly they were getting short changed 7g (or a qtr oz) on every 9 bar because all of a sudden they were buying qtr K's not half pounds...lol *(theres a thread about it in the uk section somewhere I think)

people were going nuts over it for a good while... that was a long time ago now, but in the UK it's still split from distro (metric) to street (imperial)... unless you buy "skunk" as it's so damned expensive that many people can only afford a gram or 2 ;)

edit - somone was asking about the smallest denomination in this system ... ounces used to be cut into as many as 16 peices... or "teenths" .. and probably still are for that matter ;)

"Hey man, what you need?

"Uh, I will get 2.8 decagrams of weed please?"

"What?"

"An ounce, just give me and ounce...."

That is why. Most people who were raised on the metric system don't even know all the units of measure. Average Joe doesn't realize a hectogram is 100 grams, a decagram is 10grams etc...

I can't remember ever buying just a gram... :moon:

Even as a wee one... I was a cheap ass and knew about the economies of scale ;)
