Why is weed measured in grams & then ounces???

Hey fellow growers,

So i was reading a demotivational poster today that said "WEED - helping Americans learn the metric system". I'm from Australia so i laughed pretty hard wen i read it but it got me thinking, who came up with the idea to measure weed in grams? I'm not too familiar with the imperial system but is it true that there isnt a smaller unit of measurement in this system other than ounces?

My assumption was always that using grams came about because cannabis weighs so little & grams was the smallest unit for an accurate measurement. Then it goes to ounces & back to the imperial system again.

Let me know what you guys think,

An oz is actually 28.3495231 grams, but it's usually considered to be 28. So each time a person buys a quarter oz they should get 7.1 grams, but they usually only get 7. Think of all the tons that people have been ripped off for over the decades!

he is asking why do we as americans that go by one scale of measure such as ounces, pounds, tons revert to using the metric system of grams till we get to ounces instead of just using the metric system all together.
penguin i have also wondered this myself and i have used that saying many times before. the thing that gets me is in america everything is inches and feet and yards. but now if you ever speak to someone in the military they talk in terms of meters which is metric. its just another one of those we as americans choose to be different from the rest of the world.

Canada went metric years ago but apparently it was because metric is easily converted from say mm to cm etc...
Its easier to divide add and multiply.

The only thing most canadians knew at the time was the 28 grams per ounce.

All the rest we hated learning also.

Yeh memphis man was right on the money with wat i meant to say. It just always confused me why we use grams up until the first ounce when everyone could just be using the metric system exclusively.

Anyone know who decided this way of measuring?

Haha yeh exactly right, Mezz Mezzrow. So many 'misplaced' 0.1's of a gram haha.

Ounces was the way to go when it was reasonably priced and the smallest bag you would consider buying was a 1/2 Oz.

A few decades pass, the war on drugs is well under way, cartels control distribution, scumbag dealers milk the market.

End result; inflated prices, mediocre product being sold in smaller quantities for top dollar.

What's a douchebag going to market for $20?

A gram or a 1/28 of an Oz.?

The term gram rolls off his tongue slicker than balls off his chin.

It's only marketing because who weighs at that micro level?

Better to overgrow and give away 1/4's and 1/2's than to bloody your hands and sell your soul, whoring grams.

Most of this came about because its how the dispensaries and compassion clubs dish it out so everyone else cashed in to.

Remember the days when you could get nickels, dimebags, 1/2 ounces or ounces? $20 ounces only all the mexican weed got sprayed, then we got a better selection like columbian gold but it then jumped up to $50 or $60 a bag. But SO much better quality
Gone are those days.

also just to put another spin on it we as americans have helped the mexicans learn the imperial system you used to get kilos of weed now you get pounds. hardly any bricks that hit this part of the country are a kilo anymore lol. if you find some one who is getting kilos of weed in he is dealing with a newbie in mexico lol.

Back in the day I guess you just bought "lids." There was no unit of weight, it was just a bag maybe four fingers high. Like $15- $20 for a lid or something.

Lid, zip, 4 finger

All slang for an ounce basically. My teacher and parents have talked about this. You bought for $5 a finger, 4 finger's was a ounce for $20. Or (in my dads case) you could pay $50 for a ziplock bag full (about 2.25-2.5oz)... aka a "Zip" that soon got changed because that was sold with leaf and all intact... so it wasnt great. Then you started buying just nug, and it got priceyer cause of more work but then my dad stopped smoking.

Or thats how it went around here. lol. if theres ever Kilo's its all coke ha. That stuff will get ya real technical with the measuring... Was watchin a show where some dealer was pushing gram's at .8. What a prick!

Yeh kilos dont seem to be that common around here either even though i live in a metric system society. This is probably due to the fact that only ppl in organised crime would ever buy a kilo of weed haha. It's just a fuckload. The most ive ever bought is HALF a pound over here.

Glad to see some Americans understand grams though. It's a step towards the yanks learning the right system haha :)
