Trying to keep it simple

On my first grow ever and thought I would try and keep the method simple.

I started two seeds in plain ProMix BX with nothing added and watered (plain RO) every 2-3 days (when soil was dry). When the two where appropriatly big enough I started to add nutes to the water. I only use Botanicare Pureblend Pro, Grow - Vegetative and supplement with Cal-Mag.

Now right from the beginning the seedlings have not been doing too well.

At first I thought I started nutes too early so I laid of nutes and water (RO) only for another 2 weeks. Saw some improvement but not much.

Then I thought it may be too much water so I ensured that I was only giving enough that the plant would not leak out the bottom but looked moist. And would wait until the soil very dry before watering again. Still no improvement.

I reintroduced nutrients and cal-mag and made sure PH is 5.8-6, no significant improvement.

This is what I see happening to my plants.

The Hawiian Snow, growing taller with new leaves forming all the time but when they start to get a little to big (around 1-2") they start to dry out curl either up or down with no specific coloration.

Utopia Haze: Leaves grow around 2-3" and then start to show blotches of brown/yellow with curling down.

I am stuck, I have tried to address all the symptoms based the very complete and informative "sick plant guide" from this forum.

I read somewhere that organic nutes are not taken up by the plant but that the nutes are broken down by the bacteria in the medium/soil, the bacteria waste is taken up by the plant. So I am now thinking because I am using only Promix that there is no bacteria and as such am not getting good growth (I am reaching for straws).

The plants are almost 40 days old and is between 8-10" tall. Under a 200w CFL 24/7, temp 78F-80F, humid 38-40%

I am thinking I am gonna transplant into soil but am reluctant cause everything I read on my nutes is that it is great and people have great results.

you should post some pictures. yea theres been quite a few debates of whether pureblend stuff is really organic or not, but i have used that in just straight promix, and it has worked fine. you might have had some nute burn, but its kind of hard without seeing anything. try getting some pictures up, someone here will definitely help you.

Some Pics

Here are some picture of the two babies, as you can see they are pretty tiny for a 40 day old. Forgot to mention that I want these as mother plants.

I also thought it was nute burn, transplanted to new ProMix and then only RO for about 2 weeks, the plant did not improve. New leaves would form and then a few days later would start showwing signs of dying leaf. The last picture in my post is what happens.

hmm.. thats kind of strange, dont know what it really is, but what are the temps, and everything like where your growing? how close is the light to the plant?

Plant on the right of picture 1 def got nute burn and has low pH IMHO...

Plant on the left looks pretty good other than some heat stress... Also looks a little pale and may need some N.

Hope it works out.
sit it out man they will probably be fine...

A few of my plants (in the greenhouse) looks like that too. I'm not sure what it is, but it's not nute burn., as the other plants (in the greenhouse) are just fine (growing under the same conditions). Can't rule out heat, as some plants (same strain) might be more susceptible to heat than others. My plants, that look the same, have all later developed fine top colas. They don't produce as much as the others, but it'll still be a shame to remove them, if you don't have any plants to replace them with.

What nutes were you using? what amount did you use?did you wait until the cotyledon leaves started to yellow?

If you are looking to go organic, you may want to head over to that forum. The organics for beginners thread should help. Once you see the recipes on page 1 you will realize that you may want to add more to your mix. 60% promix %20 perlite %20 earth worm castings is a pretty standard mix. If you follow the recipes over there EXACTLY, you will have a very successful base mix, that you can tweak later on.

If you really want to 'keep it simple', you'll want to add powdered dolomite lime, azomite, soft rock phosphate, humic acid, kelp, etc.. so that you can give it 'water only' it's whole life, and not worry about your cal/mags, bottled nutes, etc.. You will then not have to worry about ph, trace minerals, and most of the drama that comes with standard soil/hydro growing.

You MUST build a proper base though if you want to grow in that style, otherwise you would be better served to grow with chems or in hydro.

Hey Zendo, your advice is spot on. I went to the forum you suggest this weekend and have mixed the base soilmix. I have transplanted yesterday to that base. I will keep them in there till I can take some clones and then turn 2 clones (Cloning, another adventure in the making...whoohooo) into mothers planted in the dry nute mix recipe and will likely flower these two.

Currently I am using Botanicare PureBlend Pro Grow Veg. and no I did not wait for the cotyledon leaves to start yellowing, I found out about that advice after I messed things up.

Really appreciate the guidance!

Do you think a clone from these would react in the same way?
