Watering ideas ?

Hello, I have some questions :
I've made a kind of smart pot using 6 layers of medical gauze and my idea is to put them in a tray and water them using solely capillarity : flood the tray and let them soak it without having to water every single plant, much like an ebb & flow table but without the flow part... I plan on adding strips of cloth in the pots to add more capillary action.
Now the questions : is this system going to work ? If not, what hassle-free, reliable, and preferably passive system will ?

yes i have used trays and watered from the bottom. worked great

a drip system is very easy to set up. esp if you go waste to drain. lots of ways to drown a plant --lol.

Drip is too complex But I don't think I could drown them, the tray will not be large enough (ie: pots with little or no space between them, I'll just water it up to the 2/3 or 3/4 of the height) to contain enough water to "drown" the pots when it will be crowded.
