here are the 7 that i made...

i drilled holes in the blue rubber piece that comes off...

only use roottech rooting hormone (cloning gel), and coco...

i think the secret with rooting hormone and coco is making sure the coco is packed in nice and tight... not sure if anyone said that in this thread, but thats whats working for me!

the cuts that are first to root are transplanted into red party cup and stuck underneath the 4ftT5 that i use as a shelf for the cuts as they bake underneath the double t-8 fluoros...

Good cloner!

Heat is vital. The best way to accomplish the ideal temps, imho, is with a product called "Flexwatt" It is used to provide reptiles with a "hotspot" in their cages. It's also used for incubators. Very cheap too!

You can buy it by the foot. It's very thin, so you can put it under things.. cloners!
A foot of the 11" Flexwatt is a few bucks and the clips that you need to hook it up are even less. All you need is a cheap extension cord and a rheostat (dimmer switch). With the dimmer, you can just dial in the temp you want. This stuff lasts for a looong time too. I've had some around for 15 years that still works great.

A lot of people don't realize that perlite doesn't absorb water...just the spaces in the expanded rock hold water. Vermiculite actually swells up like a sponge when whetted out and slowly releases the water. When the Vermiculite is watered it tends to hold the clone stems tight because it expands in size as it absorbs water, ensuring good stem contact.
I've built many many cloners, and have had good luck with the rapid rooter plugs. My only complaint besides having to drive 30 miles to buy them is that if you don't plant deep enough the stems wiggle in the foam like plugs, rather than flexing and getting stronger.
I like your idea and will get a couple soon.

my "heating pad" is the t5 that the clones sit on! that baby gets decently hot! hot enough for them to like it...

I'm in. I ordered two units from is it REI? Amazon is out and states they don't know when it will be available.
I am going to watch the wallmart as well.

I too wander around looking at things to use. LOL I thought I was the only one checking the odds and ends out for useful stuff.

I had been leaving the LED panel on 24/7 but I will take it down to 18.

I feel Vermiculite and water are honourable organic mediums. I do love soil blocks and will start seeds in them.
This looks like it will take the stress off. I don't clone that often but I am now interested in breeding and clones are a necessary part of a breeding program.

I'll update in a month or two. I have a batch in mini-pots and my soil mix at the moment.

And REI was fast! LOL Speak of the Devil

At $5 each and shipping the prompt priority mail delivery was sweet! If this saves me worries it's money well spent.

I'll get to work on the new grow-toy! I'll do the A - ? and 1 to 9 numbering. That seems easier to keep track of in a way.

Edit All done.. I went with rows A1, A2, A3, B1 ..... and a reference side to know the depth of row such as A1-1 B2-3 and so on.. It's my way of thinking.

But I want to share my Durofix screwdriver/drill Simply the best small drill I have ever known. Holds a charge and has a lot of torque. Amazon says the Durofix 4V is out of stock but there are others so I would buy another Durofix any time.
Most handy.. Light weight easier to use than big drills and cordless.

Now I need some vermiculite and room in the clone station.

I had never cloned before and wasn't looking forward to it till I saw this thread and then I couldn't wait. This method works great. My moms looked so bad that when I was cutting bottom branches of plants just starting flower I looked at what I was throwing away and said shit , these are clones. So now I just took clones of the clones I made with this ice tray. So now I just ordered my first non Nirvana strain. Bog bubble at $100 for ten seeds. It will be well worth it if I can get a good pheno for a mom. Thanks Burnt Rope.

over time the nay-sayers have been proven wrong....

I had problems with the blue caps not staying flat and allowing some vermiculite coming out. Didn't seem to effect anything that much. Also using a heat mat with temp sensor. Only problem with that is temp fluctuation in room causes the heat mat to run cooler at night. Best bet for stable water temps is the aquarium heater.
Found these clear frozen treat trays, for those not needing alot of clones. These need modification but should work well. Order online from BB & Beyond........4.99ea.

high man, don't worry about a little vermiculite spilling
into the res, won't bother anything.

...and yeah, those popsicle trays will work fine althoug
if you don't need many clones you can just cut one of the
ice-tube-trays in half, well, almost in half as one will have
13 cells and one will have 14 but you get the idea.

The verm coming out the bottom is no big deal really, just need to top off the tube. The trouble I see is just taking the clone tray out of the res. tray without dropping the blue caps and dumping the verm out the bottom. I'm on day 7 now and will check results next Sat.

I'm cloning some Sativas and this was my last hope of rooted cuts before I need to get things going into flower.

yeah man, this shouldn't be possible if you have the
blue piece on right as they fit tight, it's actually a
pain to take it off if it's on properly.

also, if your clones are well rooted, the roots will hold the vermiculite in any case.

This is such a great idea.

Thanks for the idea Burnt Rope. My biggest weakness in growing is cloning.

I have used E-Z Cloners, Rapid Rooters, and rockwool with less than spectacular results. The last time I used Rapid Rooters and got 20%.

I was able to find the tray at the 2nd Wal-Mart I went to. I might go back tomorrow and buy a few more.

Looking forward to trying it out tomorrow on some Green Crack and Skunk #1 cuttings.

I followed the directions up to the point where you said to gently push down on the vermiculite.
I had read it as: pack it as hard as you can.

This morning my cuttings were wilted, bad.

I re-read the original post, discovered my mistake, repacked/replanted, and they are perking up after 4 hrs.

If this works for me I will be so grateful to you Burnt Rope.

Let me clarify the vermiculite....

If you pack the vermiculite too loose then water cant wick properly all the way to the surface....

I dont pack loosely but use firm pressure....

When I first load the cloner with vermiculite then add water....


I always wait until the surface is moist before adding the clones.... about 15 minutes or so....

Your clones should not wilt......so clearly you had an issue.... perhaps you did pack them too tight....but remember the goldielocks thing....


not too loose....and not too tight..... but just right.....

With one shoplight and 5 cloners you can do 135 clones for 32 watts......
