Foxfarm is the best thing to use in my opinion. Never had any problems. use the ocean forest mixed with equal parts foxfarm potting mix and chunky perlite. foxfarm nutes and additives.

Totally irrelevant to the question asked.....

They don't sell Fox Farm stuff at HD or Lowes. Your name is kind of ironic by the way. You know that most Fox Farm nutes aren't organic right?

I use Fox Farm nutes myself (and like them) but it's a huge pain in the ass (and overpriced) to hunt down the soil locally, so sometimes you just gotta go with what's available, and for many people that means going to a Home Depot or Lowes and using what they have.

I've sometimes used Miracle Gro Organic soil (orange bag) picked up from Home Depot and the plants are green and healthy. Whoever said it feeds for 3 months must be mistaken. It's not time-release, like some other Miracle Gro soils.

Think Organic choice soil w some Perlite would go good with Foxfarm Nutes?

or would a Pro-Mix type be better?

Will a microwave kill the gnat eggs in the soil ? thanks for your time !!

I'm sure it will and any other critters, just a matter of how long in the micro wave?
if you go that route make sure you soil is damp,
the steam helps.

I pasturize my soil in the oven, 160-180 for a few hours.
use a thermometer and make sure you hit those temps in the middle of the soil, then time it.
I set my oven at 200 or less and I have a remote therm. to
check then temps.

I didn't see Lambert's mentioned.... It is reliable and well priced with the PH usually being spot on. Add in some Plant Tone and you have an excellent base to work with.

Lovin' the Burpee's coco bricks. I've been adding it instead of perlite in my mixes for a while with excellent results...usually around 50% peat mix and 25% coco/25% compost.

No more hydrophobic soil...fuck perlite.

Johnny R Thanks for the tip on the Burpee's coco bricks, haven't seen the Lambert's soil yet but I will take another look.

You know...the Wal-Mart "Expert Gardner" soil doesn't look too bad. It's fertilized, but it looks/feels very nice. Peat based, hardly any wood. Some Perlite already there.

Cut it with some extra Perlite and I bet it'll make a good mix.

I say it because everyone has a Wal-Mart.

Years ago, Expert Gardener was a BOG-recommended product. It was an excellent soil mix. Since then, they've changed it twice, AFAIK. The first change was fine, but the second was awful. I still have a bag of that crap in the garage. Things may have changed in the last 2 years, but I'm not touching it again.

Thanks Simon, We posted at the same time. I don't think I will be going with Expert Gardner. You did not wast your time, I appreciate the help.

As you have Home Depot near you, I'd suggest MG Moisture Control. Make sure you get a bag from their indoor area. It works well with added Perlite, and it's consistent. I use it, myself, when in a pinch. Really, Pro-Mix is the better way to go. Good luck.
