Last Summer's Tobacco Grow

N. gluaca contains no nicotine but a very similar chemical sometimes in trace amts in other Nicotiana sp. too (e.g. N. tabacum) which is anabasine. it is very similar to nicotine, but a longer duration and some diff effects, some find is rather unpleasant compared to nicotine, its effects can be aborted easily by smoking some regular tobacco because nicotine will outcompete anabasine for acetylcholine receptors and then the anabasine will be metabolized out of the system

myself, i lately have been enjoying the sun cure, and also harvesting brown up leaves which are still relatively clean from the growin plants. but i dont smoke much tobacco at all, but i do love it and love to grow it. the N. sylvestris when full size and in full bloom are prob one of the nicest Nicotianas, and at night, the smell of jasmine is so intense, they are lovely.

Your pictures are so clear that I saw some little creatures on them.
I've never grow my weed outdoor, so I'm wondering whether outdoor growing has more insect troubles than indoor growing?

This seems to be an interesting plant to grow. I don't smoke tobacco, but I would do a seed run, and grow it for ornimental value. Also, it may be great for barter one day.

I've found I have a HUGE amount of barter power with this. I can trade some seeds *of which I have tons* for a few bags of compost from my neighbor's garden, a bag of loose tobacco for a couple rides to work, and my favorite, the classic "I provide the organic tobacco, you provide the ganj" spliff. Also, what a great way to make friends... bring a grocery bag full of tobacco to a party and give everybody limitless cigarettes. To be honest, I don't smoke too much tobacco either, but I'm loving the opportunity to be generous with it.

Cool thread. I've got Sirley, Havana, Mammoth and Perique going now. I don't smoke tobacco either, but so many of my friends do and I'm concerned about them smoking non-organic crap. It's amazing how easy it is to grow. Plants are pretty too. Some people say that both tobacco and cannabis can concentrate radioactivity from rock phosphate sources of P. Not sure whether this is true, but I use bone meal for both anyway. Sherrif Bart those are some nice pictures. Isn't N. Glauca also called 'Don Juan' or 'Tree Tobacco'? I see it growing around here wild in SoCal. For anyone who doesn't know, J.L. Hudson is a great resource for books and seeds. He's like the Doctor Bronner of gardening wisdom.

You can also get seeds for free or shipping costs from many seedbanks in the US. They were started to preserve genetic lines of crops in case a disease wiped out modern strains and for genetic testing. I've received certain heirloom tomatoes as well as other vegetable crops but they do have seeds from tobacco as well. Just thought I'd share as my Hort teacher really liked for his students to request seeds.
