What's new

ooh no.. portable ac having issues advice appreciated.

Ok let me break it down nice and easy I got a grow bright 1000 watter a couple of box fans and a old dayton squirrel cage fan. All of this in a hot ass desert garage. Ive been having heat issues..who would of thought so I decide to take a trip 2 the store and buy a portable ac the Royal Sovereign Portable 11,000 BTU Air Conditioner.

Ht me for 300+ buy all looks looked great even has a window kit for exhuast/intake. I followed all instructions in the manual and installed everything properly window kit, drain line etc. I set to 76F it starts up fine, appears to running ok I stick around for about 10 mins making sure its in good order everything is cool so I take off.

Only to come back to a hot ass garage. St the ac to 60F it starts back up I sit and chill in there for about a 15-20 mins and Boom its shut off making kind of odd noise so I try turning back on and only turns on for a couple mins blowing air like a fan would no coldness. So I search the web found nothing I really might take this back if I cant get going good thing Isaved the box and receipt any help appreciated :thank you:

probly got a defective unit the compressor probly broke or it froze up and is basicly choking the fans...id return it and try again if same thing happens then report back...

I can't tell you why it happens, but that's what those things do in a hot area.
My brand new out of the box one did the exact same thing.
There's a thread here somewhere with a guy who has two of them doing it.
It's like they won't work if the area your using them in is already hot.
They blow cold air for a short time and then cut out and just blow air, after a while of this they end up raising the temp of the area your trying to use them in to above where it would be if you used nothing.

If it is too hot where the A/c is placed, the compressor has automatic shut off that protects the a/c compressor from overheating and being damaged, thus your compressor is shutting off.

If you feel the A/c you might notice it is hot to the touch where the compresso is.

PORTABLES R PIECES OF SHIT!!!

PORTABLES R PIECES OF SHIT!!!

HI peeps,
I have had NOTHING but poor experiences with portable A/Cs.
they simply r not meant for the types of duty growers place on them, the units are not meant/built for continuous duty and failures should be EXPECTED in due time (short).

the window shaker in a vented box designs actually have much more longevity/better performance than the portables.

if u have the means a mini-split is the perfect long term solution.

sorry to be so negative but............been there, been burned:comfort:

ok, here goes. im a exp ac service tech. 36 years worth. when you installed, was the condensor air blowing out of the grow room? make sure you got all packing out of it? were both fans running? 11000 btu wont cool a garage in vegas! those units were made to do one small room-like a bedroom. if you have not exchanged let me no, glad to help.:comfort:

yep its too hot in there and his compressor is shutting off trying to protect itself from over heating.

I have a brand new 10,000btu lg and works great at cooling a 4x8 tent in a bedroom, 72 with lights on.

A hot ass garage is too big and too hot just for an 11,000btu.

I wouldn't grow in a garage in a hot enviorment because of this very reason, think about you have a 1k and your using more energy just trying to cool the hottest place in your house.

thanks I was thinkin mabye froze up too but there was some water underneath the unit but I believe its the compressor:)

well its not raising the temp ....yet only lowers temp few degrees if any, my problem is for the amount of elec its uses is not worth it cuz it barly makes a difference thnx:)

buy fridgedare, worth it.

I will look into it thnx:)

You know what green lung I think you hit the nail on head thats the only thing that makes sense not unless its a faulty unit, the area is about 14X25 ft and gets 95F+ in there.thnx:)

Yeah appeared to be blowing out and yes all packing out yes both fans run. And I figured 11,000 btu would cover it only 14X25 space but then again im no ac pro thnx:)

Mabye I should just tent everything up kinda expensive and im working on a sick stadium I always wanted to try but 72F sounds nice thnx :)

Well its a 14x25 ft space with 3 box fans 2 'vornado' fans 6 in dayton squrril cage fan for exhaust and this piece of crap ac. And yes you would grow in a garage if you had the oppurtunity but taking from that comment you probaly dont and plenty of people grow in hot/cold garages sucessfully year round I just dont feel like laying down the cash for expensive upgrades quite yet and yeah ur right I dont like the amount of energy used for the amount of degrees lowered but why should I care when someone else is paying elec:headbange

i just got one question....

if your going through the trouble to hook up the portable to the window, why didnt you just buy a window a/c in the first place? would seem more logical if your going to be using the widow to vent the portable anyways .....

Anothor question?What would you do.

Ok so if I do take this ac back which I probaly will after my buddy looks at it Ill have about $350 to play with. So my question is what aircon/inline fans etc should I buy to bring my temps down drastically thanks :)

if your not shy about using water.....you could buy iceboxes from hydro innovations, and by using one icebox per light the air comming out at the end actually cools your room, takes no more electricity than a 6" fan.....but if running drain to waste then you do use alot of water(i dont have water meters), or if you want to get all high tech get a chiller and then you can use a res and pump and recirculate.....

Well Im glad you asked the garage has no windows but has a 4x8 inch externel vent space to the outside has a metel mesh over it. I used that and if you look at the ac I have it has a lil 4 inch duct coming out the back I just rigged it right up to the lil vent port:)

Wish I had the beast of a ac you have lol:jump:

Bad idea... 1) It doesn't seem to be working. 2) You bought an open circuit unit which will suck air from your grow room and exhaust it outside. It will carry smell with it. If you need to buy a portable get the closed system that has 2 hoses for exhaust. The other thing I would do is construct a smaller grow room within the garage itself. You can insulate and seal it better so the A/C doesn't have to work as hard. Also if you build a room within the garage you could easily design it so a window AC unit could sit in the wall. Then you can vent the garage outside so the AC compressor doesnt overheat.
