OK maybe I was a bit dogmatic...no offense intended, but I stand by the central tenet of that rant.

No worries mate :) Just looking for some tips and a civil discussion. I think this is why we are all here (most of us anyways :hide:). I take the opinions of my fellow growers seriously and I too feel that degrading landraces would be a serious violation of a grower's code of ethics.

On another note, while sativas are really nice to smoke, I still like those knockout indicas that put me to sleep. A little variety is always nice. I just didn't bother to mention it thinking there was no way I could get away with an indica dom here.

I have been to vietnam, cambodia and laos and scored good weed relatively easy. If you are living there then i would think that you would have free time on your hands, there are so many places that you and your wife can visit on day and weekend trips for small change. go for a nice trip up to the northern mountain areas like sapa, ask a tuk tuk driver and you will score for sure, these people are far from scum, they are hard working family men who will get the primo for you!
anything outdoors with indica will rot on you.
Just remember breeders have been using great vietnamese strains like dalat, viet black and so on.
If you do come across some remember to share!
Best of luck

Thanks need4weed, I know when it comes to the countryside that the type of people to deal with will be much different than here in the big city. I'm hoping to take a trip to Laos or Cambodia one day. Kind of sucks that usually when we do travel here in Vietnam it's with the whole extended family, and there would be no tolerance for smoking. They're very anti-any drug, quite old-fashioned and set in their ways. Typical of Asian cultures.

Need4weed - there's a BIG difference between passing through a country and actually living there.

Personally I think it would be plain idiotic for him to go asking around for weed...when he ain't moving on after.

As to dilluting the gene pool! Don't get me started! See a male = cull it. Psychedelic tropical sativa might not be his cup of tea.

Xyz has one pack of c99 up at the bay...wally duck f2's?...it's good, fast, potent and fruity. I've grown it. Seeds are VERY hard shelled...I had to scuff and soak and then chip with a scalpel to get them to germ!

Good luck!

:)

Also please document!

I am growing Goldfinger (do a search)...hopefully I will cross it with something...would be great to see that grown down there ;)

Here some information about Saigon, other cities available too : http://www.webehigh.com/city/detail.php?CITYID=2045

I don't think there are any natural land races growing in this area. Too hot and humid, poor soil or then the VC got rid of it all. If I'm not mistaken the local strains are from the mountains in the middle and North of Vietnam.

Very hot & very humid is not a problem. There sure are strains adapted to the conditions you describe, cannabis is very adaptive plant !

As other said above, introducing foreign genetics is not a good idea, even though your situation doesn't seem to be highly contaminating, but you just never know.
The GN Collection offers a nice selection of South East Asian sativas (Foxtail Sativa, Khmer Gold, Luang Prabang Lao Sativa, Thai Stick Sativa) with not that long flowering time, some actually pretty fast for SEA sativas. https://www.seedboutique.com/store/index.php?manufacturers_id=25
Growing these under their homeland sun must be quite an experience and so must be the result ! yum yum !

With you all the way! If this does end up happening I'm more than happy to document.

Yep surprised no one has mentioned the GN collection yet. Was looking through the strains last night and definitely some interesting ones there. The 3.5 meter sativas are a little scary but still some strains to consider. Hopefully the man himself can stop by and give some insight.

WeBeHigh FTW! Looked through it for the whole area a couple weeks ago :)

You want seeds, Just ask at the farmers market. Theyll probably be at the spice/herb vendors or at bigger markets there will be a seed stall for the farmers, No guarrentees of course , but you sure as hell wont pay 10,000,000,000 dong for ten of them & i bet you the Viet Customs dept arent nice fellas if they find that packet !

Hello ICmaggers!

I have 3 successful HID indoor grows under my belt, but circumstances have changed and I have moved to Vietnam and might be staying here for a few years. Electricity is very expensive here, and the weather is hot, so I'm thinking my only options are:

Expensive: LED lighting with AC and all the other goodies for indoor growing

Not so expensive: CFL's and fluoro's with AC, using the light at night when I'm home and already using AC.

Cheap: grow on my rooftop

I have some seeds already:
OJD SSSDH (10)
Rez Chemdog x Sour Diesel (10)
KillerChem F2 (5)
Mandala Safari Mix (5)

The dilemma I'm facing is that I think I have some good genetics and want to do right by them. I'd almost rather buy some more seeds that would make more sense to run without perfect conditions.

I'd like some help in choosing a strain (preferably from the Boo so I can use CC) that I could run on my rooftop. I know a haze dominant would probably be the best, however I don't want to have to flower for too long. Mold during the rainy season (fall) is also a concern. Potency is not really a big issue and I'm sure anything I try will be better than the schwag they have here.

I've included a weather chart if it helps at all. Thanks to all who reply, anxiously waiting to hear what you have to say!

NOTE: NO males will be grown out so as to PRESERVE local genetics from possible contamination

Id go for the rooftop grow if i were you .. You will find most strains that flower indoors under 70 days will ripen for you proir to the wet season and you can avoid the mould ..
Something like skunk or c99 for instance would take you around 16 weeks from seed to harvest , that would apply for all the year , even the dry season ..

Haha 10 billion dong is like $550K! I don't mind shelling out a couple hundred bucks for 2-4 different strains from proven reliable breeders. I'll probably get a cheaper strain or two then go for something I've really wanted to try (like C99). Fems aren't out of the question either, I'm just a little hesitant to get strains that have a bad rep for hermies.

Might be an idea with the farmers market, but my wife has never seen them or heard of them here. Maybe in the local China town...

And about the Customs, yeah that'll be another problem. They open EVERYTHING that comes into the country. The seeds would be sent to a friend in Europe first to be disguised in a care package. Won't go into details (not sure if that is allowed at this site?)

Good point. The rooftop would probably be the best option. If I go indoors I'd have to do it right (carbon filter, AC, etc.). If this does happen I'll get at least a couple strains to run at different times of the year: sativas for the rainy season and something with more indica for the dry (really want that C99, kinda pissed I didn't get em from Mosca when they were still available ) I think I'm far enough south to grow all year round, even if it's not the killer, it's better than nothing.

:thank you:

deffo get something from ace, i'd try more than just one of their offerings in your case. i would do orient express and something else, maybe maybe nepjam or panama!

good luck, would love to see you growing good genetics under full SE asian sun!

Hey bigtops--have you ever lived in a foreign country before? You sound like you're wound up way too tight for Vietnam or pretty much any other place that ain't the Hamptons or Beverly Hills.

Good luck though--with your elitist, condescending attitude regarding the locals your gonna need all the help you can get...

Orient Express was on my mind also, nice mix of something at least local to the country. But that would be for the dry season methinks.

To be honest , Im really surprised you cant find any good herb. When im in that part of the world working its usually pretty easy ! Im surprised as a westerner (im assuming ) that you havent been approached buy every pseudo rasta in town, tried asking at a local backpackers ?

Obviously i dont know your wife at all, but maybe shes trying to "keep you out of trouble" instead of giving you accurate information about the local scene ,in my experiance Asian women are VERY protective of their men.

And if your worried about the local police, Just bribe em in advance, Bottle of johnny walker and a carton of marlboros a month for the local police chief and you should be all good ! 2 bottles and you can probably be deputised !

Yeah I'm sure it's around but I don't go to the tourist areas and am currently living with family in a district with zero foreigners. Had a really bad experience with a Federali in Mexico already, so that makes me admittedly over cautious, probably even unreasonably so. But, better safe than sorry and the last thing I want is to have any problems here that could sour my relationship with my in-laws. It's very complicated and don't feel like going into it in this thread. And you are right, having an Asian wife is complicated. If she was with me when buying, people would look at her as a hooker (even though she's really a nerd I met back in Europe :)). Losing face is a really big deal here.

Anyways I hope I could bring a little clarity to the situation. Feel free to PM me if you have any other suggestions or just curious about the culture around me.

dude you are a heavy, to move and start growing in Veitnam? I know that in Thailand, its death for trafficking, I hope for your sake it is cannabis friendly?, Not trying to rain on your parade, for a foreiner to be arrested for cultivation, is a big headline maybe a promotion too, carry lots of cash to payoff the cops.

Being in jail in a country were you are a guest gets old fast, trust me........

however I would try to go with some local bagseed , Im sure you will get some beans if u score a sack.

GOOD LUCK . TS
