Seeds in post led to hydroponics pot bust
ROANNE JOHNSON
July 7th, 2010
A CASTLE Hill man has been busted importing marijuana seeds from the UK to create his own home-grown hydroponics operation in a unit owned by his mother.
Australian Customs and Border Protection Service intercepted a package on August 16 last year.
It was headed to a local unit complex from Ireland addressed to a "Terry White".
Officers at a New South Wales port became suspicious after checks on the local residence revealed no one who lived at the address went by that name.
Upon further inspection of the package it was revealed to contain three packets with ten cannabis seeds each. The packets are sold legally overseas from a cannabis seeds supply company, under the brand names "Dutch Passion", "White Label" and "Flying Dutchman".
Brett James Dickson pleaded guilty yesterday in the Townsville Magistrates Court to several drug-related offences, including unlawfully producing, supplying and possessing a dangerous drug.
Police prosecutor Senior Sergeant Greg Mobbs said the 36-year-old man was arrested when police attended a Castle Hill address. Officers went to the Mills St unit, owned by the defendant's mother, on June 12 this year.
Dickson admitted to police when they arrived that the seeds were his and then gave them a tour of his in-house hydroponics set-up.
"He revealed he was growing cannabis," Sen-Sgt Mobbs said.
"He showed police eight plants located in the bathroom off the main bedroom."
The prosecutor said the marijuana plants were being grown under a sophisticated hydroponics system. "They were under several lights, being ventilated by fans, using a power converter and an amount of fertiliser," he said.
While in the main bedroom 26g of cannabis were found in a bowl and more hydroponics lights located in the cupboard.
The defendant admitted buying the equipment from an online hydro store. In total 105g of cannabis was found in the unit.
A mobile phone was also seized with a text message revealing Dickson had supplied the drug to a friend in April, 2010.
However, he claimed to police he did not sell cannabis and that drug deal was "a one-off thing".
Defence lawyer Ali Lyons said Dickson, who is currently unemployed but once worked in real estate, turned to cannabis to address some health problems.
"He had two heart attacks two weeks apart in 2009 and suffers from anxiety,' Ms Lyons said.
"He took up smoking it when a friend offered it to him and he started growing it after that for personal use."
Magistrate Peter Smid did not record a conviction for the defendant who had a clean record.
Dickson was ordered to do 60 hours of unpaid community service.

Similar thing but even more devious happened to my friend in Finland. His seeds came through Customs, package opened but delivered anyways. Cops show up 2 months later with a drug dog expecting to bust his grow. Never got it up and running though :)

2 heart attacks by age 36? Yowza. I think getting busted would be the least of my worries.

I was just thinking the same thing. He may not have done much jail time for that bust in the states, but his record would be all f***** up when they were done with him.

Many of you may not think that having an arrest record is a big deal, but in the information age it's amazing who can and will search for info like that and use it against you whether they tell you about it, whether it's legal or whether it's ethical. Employers, banks, loan officers, landlords, credit card companies etc.

I have open positions in my department I'm trying to fill and 6 of the last 12 candidates that I liked were rejected by HR: 1 failed their drug test and 5 failed the background check. A little poking around lead me to find that the 5 that failed background checks all had misdemeanor arrests that they either did not disclose on the application or that HR found distasteful. No matter the legality, our HR department flushes anybody with an arrest for any drugs faster than Lindsay Lohan can hoover a line.

Life is much easier with a clean record and a little common sense about what you're doing goes a long way toward keeping your record clean. Don't take the easy way out and don't trust anybody you don't know well enough to donate an internal organ to :)

This was in Australia. In the US they send you a letter that says we found what we think are beans and if you want them come get them at the customs office. No need to worry about this kinda shit in the US even in non med states.

Why use a fake name to your address if your just going to admit to it anyways? If he just would of kept his mouth shut, they wouldn't have had any proof.
I know that i would never use a fake name for seeds. Out of all the risks associated w/ growing cannabis, i think ordering seeds is the last thing i would worry about.

Why were they trying to match a name with address unless they were suspicious to start with? It's plausible someone is visiting that address and having something mailed to them. They must search a lot of packages by that standard? I think they probably opened it then checked the name/address.

That's just what I want to read about the day after I just ordered "three packets with ten cannabis seeds each." For once, I'm glad I don't live down under

26 grams he was caught with?

That is almost embarassing to the police force there 26 Grams? They would find that under the cushions of my couch, with about 4 dollars in change

Maybe they could report that as proceeds of a crime

That is despicable to bust a guy like this..

Bro you have no idea how fucked the state of Queensland can be towards pot, this guy actually did alright with the 60hrs community service outcome, much better than going to the Stewart's Creek bighouse.
Australia has a long way to go unfortunately, in regards to cannabis tolerence and use. I do remain hopeful though that I may see some positive changes towards cannabis here in Aust in my lifetime.

Very fair, and understanding. I mean he broke there laws, but was handed an appropriate sentence for what he was doing. I think the "system" should always judge people by there history.
