is there a better one over the other?
seems like the roots grow more evenly in the round pots and have to fill into the corners on the square one??

I like the idea of square so they be packed together
nice and evenly.

opinions?

for starting plants out, how long would you want leave a plant veg in a 4-1/2" pot before upsizing?
is that too big to start a seeding in?
I was going to start them off in those little seeding paks that
are about 1-1/2"X1-1/2"X3"
then move them into the 4-5" pots but those are about the same depth as the starter squares?

anyone got a good suppler outlet for small and larger pots.
they seem to want arms and legs at the usual hydro/grow website or
I have to order a case of 400-500 then its dirt cheeep

take a look at these before you decide, i am awaiting delivery
of some myself so i haven't used them yet so i can't speak
from personal experience.

here, go look for yourself and you decide.

smart pots, a discussion

yo mr bozo,

Ive read up on the smart and air pots and I like them alot.
probably get into them later on but right now I'm just starting up on my 1st grow @2000w and after ballast-lites-fans-seeds-soil etc etc and everything else they are just too pricey.
figure I'll be needing 36-50 for flowering in 3-5 gallon containers.

I just found a great place, greenhouse mega store and i can get the nursery grade 5gal pots for just under buck a a piece.

and for smaller pots, 3-4"ers I can get me for between 19-21cents each at aplace where Ive order landscaping stuff wholesale, farm tek.
you guys should check em out. they have controllers, ph-tds hid light and bulbs

all this was way cheeper than what I was looking at from places like plantlighting hydro, .99 for 5x5" pots

My problem with square pots is that it's hard to pick them up without deforming the side and possibly slumping the soilmix if it's freshly repotted. Gripping them at the corner helps, but I prefer round pots for anything 1g or larger. Little square ones are OK.

why not use 16oz styrofoam or plastic cups to start them. It will give them a nice developed root system before planting in bigger pots, and I get 32 of them for $1.55

no doubt they are a bit pricey. personally, i'm only a
micro-grower so i don't need as many pots as you
but if the yields are improved even half what is claimed,
then they will be worth every penny.

also, if you've researched smart-pots you already
know they are made of fabric. i have seen people
who are making their own fabric 'pots' using the
same stuff landscapers use to limit weeds and you
can get a roll of that stuff for about $10.00 with
enough fabric to make many, many pots.

on a side note, and i don't know if this is true, i've been
told that weed-fabric is designed to allow water and oxy
to flow better in one direction than in the other, so
when using it on the ground you'd want that side up
to allow water to flow better into the ground.

i mention this because, if true, you'd want to make sure
you put that side to the out side of the 'pot', that way
they will hold the water better.

here is another thread on the topic and i'm pretty sure it
was in this thread where i say someone making their own
'smart-pots'.

I use both square and round pots to flower - all 2gal. No difference in growth pattern, yield, etc.

firstly square cuz you can fit more plants evenly and also round pots cause mj's roots to grow around the bottem of the pot and root bound while square makes the roots stop at the abrupt edge

and i trans plant as soon as i see roots sticking out the bottem of my pot
and about your pots a buck a piece for 50 pots is not that much seing as how much weed each can grow im broke and i could afford that:wave:

square pots are good in a limited space, so you can butt them up together

round pots give ME MORE (no flames) per pot, but i cant get as many in there

so its all about your space.

Square pots look like the thing if you are going to bonzai or refresh a mother plant. Pop it out of the pot and saw off a layer of roots on each side.
There is a tutorial posted somewhere.

I'll be going with Smart Pots myself. I was concerned about transplanting, thinking it might rip the roots, but someone has posted just how easy it is: just peel down the sides of the old Smart Pot.

i prefer square as i can fit more in my limited amount of space

with seed i will start off using these small peat coco square pots, i think they're 1-1/2" square, maybe 2":
Coco_Coir_Peat.jpg

i transplant when i see roots coming trying to come out the bottom of the pot, i don't transplant really though, i just get a bigger pot and place the whole peat pot into the soil, so i'm not tampering with any of the roots directly, i don't show any signs of stress when i do it this way

the last round i had these 99cent store 1.75 gallon square pots, i think they are 8" square, these things weregreat for utilizing my tiny amount of space:
%5BUNSET%5D.jpg

currently though, i am using only 1 of the above pots for my largest, all others are in those handy 16oz. party cups...16oz. party cups and a drill make for awesome small pots, i also use the 16oz. cups for cloning, love 'em!

i like square pots just because it is easier to fit them into my space. do a somewhat sog, so its a lot easier to fit more square pots into my space than the round ones.
