Dutch Smuggling Ring Busted With 10 Tons of Flowers

Known for centuries as exporters of flowers, I would have thought to check the boxes from Holland for Cannabis a long time ago. Yet police in Britain recently discovered some folks doing exactly that, mixing more than one kind of flowers in their boxes!

The Dutch flower industry provided the ideal cover for a multi-million pound drug smuggling gang operating between Holland and Britain.

The ring, which has been smashed by police, was responsible for smuggling tonnes of skunk cannabis hidden in lorry loads of flowers from the Netherlands.

The gang based themselves in old buildings at Poplar farm in Wanborough, near Swindon, Wiltshire.

When police struck last year they seized 10 tonnes of skunk with an estimated street value of £30m.

Eight men and a woman were arrested during the investigation, which involved detectives from Wiltshire and their Dutch counterparts.

Perfect conditions

The flower-growing industry of Holland provides the perfect set of conditions and ideal cover for growing cannabis and for exporting the drugs.

Where you can grow tulips, you can grow cannabis - and the dealers took advantage of the flower trade to ship their haul to the UK.

After buying boxes of cut flowers at the giant international flower market at Naaldwijk near The Haig, the gang would then take them to their own warehouses before placing the bags of cannabis beneath the flowers.

Det Sgt Thom Hoekstra of the Dutch police said: "You've got the chrysanthemum, which is a long flower with a long stem.

"The flower itself was cut off by about 10cm from the top and 10cm from the bottom, so as you check the box, you can put your hand in and you feel the flowers, but as you reach more into the box itself, you find the plastic bags with the cannabis."

The couriers drove their lorries to The Hook of Holland and then on to ferries bound for Harwich.

lol too funny! and to think the police never thought about it....

To paraphrase an english gentleman: "Don't underestimate your enemy. It's only really, really stupid people who think the law is stupid."
So don't think for a second they wouldn't know exactly what's going on. It's only not in their interest to make a big fuzz about.

"Skunk" when used by the British press is just another term for sensimilla, they aren't talking about the strain. Although I bet a lot of commercial bud is Skunk #1 or related to it, so in a way they are.

The stuff that can't be sold on the coffeeshop scene because it's not good enough is what comes to England. Having said that, they do send some good stuff over too.

Skunk in the UK is a catch-all word for dank...Just like in the US, it's Kush... Kush mountains and Cali Kush are unrelated, someone not in our world, used this term incorrectly sometime and sadly it stuck, so not everything one will hear about Skunk or Kush, means it's even really related to the origin of the terms. Skunk is a stabilized hybrid cultivar. Skunk also means "good" in the UK. Kush is a mountain range throughout the Afghan region of Eurasia. Kush is also a landrace cannabis cultivar. Cannabis Afghanica, which is a branch of Cannabis Indica, there are documented differences. Kush is also a moniker put on "California" flavored weed. What I mean by that, is usually a lemon fuel funk, usually above average to devastating potentcy. Mostly a marketing ploy to boost a cultivars' appeal on a dispensary menu, but recently has been documented and most version are stable or clone only. Even though the terms are contradictory, it's widely used and accepted and in the US is grown and smoked commonly in the 13 medical exempt states. Also catches higher prices.

I do not think I saw any lumps of "Good" Dutch import weed, in the last decade, it was always lower end cheapest quality that would not sell well in Coffeeshops, but qualified as "Skunk" for the undersupplied, uneducated UK market. The Albanian "Rabbit Bedding" was the worst I ever saw there though, that really did nothing at all, apart from give you a headache...

Now people seem to generally know more about the quality, some will even pay more for really good weed, but the legal clampdown has forced the price up and there is ever more crap quality from what I hear... Plus every 14 year old thinking their little band of hoodies are going to Scarface their way to the top of the pile... Following growers home from growshops is now a real problem.
