My First Mushie Grow

Pans cyans are more potent but they usually aren't dried.. People eat them fresh usually.. Your moisture content might be off.. That's usually the case when jars take long to colonize and there's no sighn of contams..

yup. i remember 79 commenting before on another post i made about injecting too much solution throwing off your moisture content...the 4 jars i injected with like 2 or 3 cc's each are taking forever and a day to colonize

Yes the proper moisture content is an easy way to mess up your jars.. Always measure your water and use percise amounts...

Hey Abbie!
Great thread! Lots of great info & input!

I've studied BRF teks for a couple of years...on the side...on & off...LOL

I've studied the rr video a while back...still got my notes...
I recognize most of what is going on here! :headbange

But, the monotub is all new to me!

:lurk:

Looking great man!! It's been a pleasure to help... One thing tho... Since you like to open the monotub to take pictures and check progress you are still potentially exposing your substrate to contams... Only after a substrate is fully colonized is it resistant to contamination... A very easy way to remedy this is to place plastic wrap over the top of the tub before you put the lid on... This way you can still take the lid off to take pictures and check it out without exposing the bin to contams... You can now easily see inside and have a barrier to keep things out... Hair is a biggie... Hairs fall out all the time looking over the tub and could potentially get a few mold spores on there and then bam you have Green Mold...

Your bin looks great and very healthy.. Very ropey mycelium.. Can't wait to see your 1st flush pictures... Also I noticed your bins are blue... How are you going to provide light to the monotub when it is time to fruit?? If you need any ideas or just would like another opinion let me know and I can give you a couple simple solutions... Great job! May your 1st harvest be a potent harvest!! Next step after this bin is over will be to isolate the best growing qualities...

Thanks for the interesting thread!!

Thanks for the interesting thread!!

Those would be polyfill stuffed in holes for a little air exchange/filteration.

Hey, many thanks to all who have stopped by to check things out. OK, 79, I'll stop opening my monotubs. As far as lighting goes, after I cased, I was just gonna leave 'em with their lids on with no light. Will I not get any mushrooms? That guy in the monotub tek said his tubs didn't get much light and he had tubs full of shrooms.

Yes they need light.. Yea you could get shrooms without light.. But if your gonna try for it why not do it right?? All you need to do it cut the top out of the lid and replace with plexiglass... You came this far so I wouldn't slack now.. The key factors in fruiting are Fresh Air Exchange, About 12 hours or so of light, slight drop in temperature and High Humidity... Just because one person had good results doesn't necessarily mean you will... Teks are guidelines, not laws set in stone... So add the light, it is important to fruiting...

Another thing... That TEK your using, the guy is using Stack N View style monotubs... They have clear lids... So they did get light... Your tubs don't have clear lids... You should either go buy clear lids that fit, or cut holes in the lids and replace with plexiglass... Also have you thought of fruiting without a casing??? Casings for Cubensis in my opinion don't give much benefit... Plus it will take your tub another 5 days to a week to colonize the casing... This will then delay your harvest for that time... Also when harvest time comes the casing material gets all over the place and it's sometimes a pain to clean off your mushrooms... A casing is good if you have less then perfect growing conditions... The purpose of a casing is to keep the substrate moist and humid... But in a monotub the substrate is already kept moist and humid... But I don't reccomend just casing and then neglecting the bin... You need to mist that casing every day or every other day depending on how much you mist... Things like misting, patching and fanning aren't a complete necessity but they do help increase yeilds... Neglecting a monotub is never the best way to grow...

So in conclusion Figure Out A Way To Get Light Into Those Bins... Then Determine if you are going to case or not... If you do decide to case it's still beneficial to a newer grower who is afraid to directly mist the substrate but don't expect it to add a huge yeild... Also expect the harvest to be delayed by as much as a week... If you don't case be ready to harvest/dry your mushrooms alittle earlier and be ready to pay alittle more attention to the bin making sure to keep the moisture right and the misting right... Also I highly reccomend that you fan the bin a few times a day... I know you have holes with polyfill but fanning is very beneficial...

light is important...without it the poor little mushies will get confused and grow every which way...

halfway through this grow, I had to move my fruiting chambers from one location to another due to security issues. In my new location I found a cabinet to put them in, but the tubs werent recieving indirect sunlight from a window all day like they had been getting before, and my subsequent flushes had fruits that grew in every direction, including a bunch that just grew down into the perlite...

I tried just putting a regular old lamp in the cabinet, and voila! all the fruits grew towards the light. So i guess you don't really NEED the light, but it deff helped and made things much easier/ better looking

Excellent. Your coco seems to be colonizing much faster than mine did. Your harvest is probably going to be plentiful...

OK...79...I think I digested what you've said.

For the light...I don't think cutting on the lids is an option. How's this...I purchase a 1 ft. fluorescent light and glue it to the inside of the lid. Run the cord out one of the holes. Put on timer for 12/12. Sound ok?

For the casing...I'm ready to case, but I don't have to if you think it's not necessary. So...let's say I skip the casing...what do I do with the bulk substrate from this point to harvest? Do I mist it directly? Don't touch it at all?

How often should I mist during fruiting?

How often should I fan?

Temp and humidity...should be at certain levels? I was thinking 73-75F and 90-100%.

Lots of questions, but we want this to be a success.

I'm no expert, but I'll tell you what I'm doing:

My mushies are growing and they're barely getting any light (fluorescents on the other side of the room). If you're actually putting a fluorescent in the tub, maybe only leave it on for an hour or two? I dont think mushies need much light at all...
My room temps are 70-78 (it's in my grow room) and growth is fine. I do keep a humidome over the mushies, and whenever i mist i mist the dome as well.
I mist the coco whenever I start to see it dry out. I've touched the colonized coco, and it's soft and spongy to the touch.
79 says FAE is important. I take the dome off at least twice a day, to check things out, and that seems to be enough. Because your tub is so deep, you might want to actually fan air into it using the lid as a fan.

I think a light tube inside the bin like that will bring the heat up way too much... You can always just remove the lid and replace with plastic wrap... That will keep humidity in and let light get inside... Then when they had enough light just put the lid back on...But you won't be able to stack them without the lid of coarse... For Fresh Air Exchange you can just peel the wrap off and use the lid to fan the substrate... I reccomend doing this about 3-6 times daily... If your substrate is fully colonized and you don't want to case just introduce to fruiting conditions... Start exposing the bin to light and start fanning between 3-6 times a day...

Now misting... If your moisture content is right you won't really need to mist... Your substrate should never dry out... Yours looks fine... But when the mushrooms start developing mist the inside walls of the tub once daily... If it ever starts to look like your substrate is drying out then mist as well... You can directly mist the substrate but do it from a good distance so you don't damage the mycelium...

So your routine should go like this... In the morning remove the lids of the bins and put plastic wrap over the top... Expose to indirect light for about 12 hours and make sure to fan the bin out about 2-4 times during this period... When the 12 hours or so of light is over, put the lids back on the bins and put away until the next morning... During this "dark" time you can open the bins to fan another 1-2 times... Then after you wake up you start the cycle again... Now once mushrooms start forming then you can start misting once or twice a day... Mist them before you fan them... Following this easy schedule you will have mushrooms forming fast... Remember wait until full colonization of the substrate!! If you put into fruiting conditions to early you can get comtams...
