Whatever end it may be I believe some simple ideas keep me hopeful:

1. Their is no prevention or stopping the end whatever it may be your best interest is to survive it.

2. The tighter the grip the consumer life style has on you the more of a hard time you will have when it comes time to let go. Something I look forward to is the psychological breakdown amongst ourselves and others we will face.

3. Their is no real substantial definitive evidence of what way we go down but knowing that down is more sooner than later and to enjoy what spoils we do have now.

As for how it all goes down, all of it sounds good but I'm down for a zombie apocalypse.

Also this goes under Gaia as well but water resources running out may cause hysteria. just my opinion.

1 + 4 most likely but gotta go with #1.
Look at history. Wars and a crazy leader here and there are inevitable. Add to that the nuke proliferation we've seen in 65 years and what the future will likely hold....

We've got North Korea for starters, Pakistan next door to India each with the bomb, leftover U.S.S.R. material floating around out there and I'm sure other countries that wouldn't mind getting in the game....and that's just now.

Most of those other options might happen every million or billion of years. One full out world war or one crazy fucker with a kickass nuclear arsenal....I guess i'm a pessimist doomsdayer but I don't see civilization seeing the year 3000.

Why does there have to be an end? If the collective human thought says there's an end then there will be an end. I only believe there will be a beginning with no end in site.

So much trouble in sight.

Glad I'm too old to care and too medicated to feel it.

while the US may collapse, it wont wipe out humanity, sure it would probably lead to the loss of a huge chunk of the human population since the system we have no wouldnt be able to support itself and famine in areas dependent on import of food woulld be widespread, but nonetheless that would not be the end of human life as we know it

i think space and/or earth doing something would be the most logical answer. we dont know shit really about whats in space, and we have a rather large asteroid headed our way which, in the large scope of things, has a high chance of hitting the earth and that fucker would really do some damage. that and theres still plenty big boys out in space and we have a very hard time seeing them until they are already on their way here.........plus that phenomena has occured countless times in earths past, along with potentially mass extinction causing volcanoes and other events

Now, to point this out again, we're talking about the end of the world as we know it. I've pointed this out a couple of times already, but folks seem be over-looking that in their responses. You know who you are :D

I even made a point of putting a positive out there to reinforce it.

One can hope such a horror would polarize the world into a new era of peace. Which would certainly be the end of the world we currently know.

The end of the world, as in completely obliterated, is on a scale that we have no real effect on.

But the world as we know it, as it exists right now, can certainly disappear in the blink of an eye. Maybe the phrase "Civilization as we know it ends" would be more palatable to some?

Because, let's face it, as far as that is concerned, we're barely civilized now. Upset our fragile balance a tiny bit, and "civilization" becomes a quaint phrase.

We lose power for a just a few hours and we almost immediately begin going feral :D

Okay, then if the earth is hit by an asteroid,or world wide nuke war, then I hope I go first. I wouldn't want to be around after that. Hell yes, people go nuts easily, look what happened during Katrina.

Crazy Christians are in-charge of the world... they believe the world will end in 2012... .

Christians do not believe this at all. They believe the anti Christ will come first, there will be a period where all will be good, the anti Christ show himself, things get bad, there will be a period of 7 years, the Christians will be raptured out and the sinners left to ruin. So as you can see, 2012 does not leave enough time, year wise, to fulfill what Christians believe.

I reckon it's going to end with "THE SUMMER OF RECOVERY!" or maybe we should call it the "Bummer of a Recovery".

No Economic Recovery, 40 Statistics Confirm the Collapse of the U.S. Economy Market Oracle

Most Americans still appear to be operating under the delusion that the "recession" will soon pass and that things will get back to "normal" very soon. Unfortunately, that is not anywhere close to the truth. What we are now witnessing are the early stages of the complete and total breakdown of the U.S. economic system. The U.S. government, state governments, local governments, businesses and American consumers have collectively piled up debt that is equivalent to approximately 360 percent of GDP. At no point during the Great Depression (or at any other time during our history) did we ever come close to such a figure. We have piled up the biggest mountain of debt that the world has ever seen, and now that gigantic debt bubble is beginning to pop. As this house of cards comes crashing down, the economic pain is going to become almost unimaginable.

Eric Sprott: "We Are Now Paying For The Funeral Of Keynesian Theory"
Zero Hedge
In studying the government debt market, we have inadvertently been led to question the economic theory that most fervently justified recent government spending programs: that of Keynesian economics. The so called "beautiful theory" of Keynesian economics is arguably the most influential economic theory of the 20th Century, shaping the way Western democracies approached the balance between free market capitalism and government initiatives. Like many beautiful theories, however, Keynesianism has ultimately succumbed to the ugly facts. We firmly believe the Keynesian miracle is dead.

U.S. Is Bankrupt and We Don't Even Know It: Laurence Kotlikoff Bloomberg

Let’s get real. The U.S. is bankrupt. Neither spending more nor taxing less will help the country pay its bills.

But delve deeper, and you will find that the IMF has effectively pronounced the U.S. bankrupt. Section 6 of the July 2010 Selected Issues Paper says: “The U.S. fiscal gap associated with today’s federal fiscal policy is huge for plausible discount rates.” It adds that “closing the fiscal gap requires a permanent annual fiscal adjustment equal to about 14 percent of U.S. GDP.”
