Let's talk about Molasses.

I just started using molasses with Blue Mountain Organics and so far loving it. Carbs to feed beneficial microbes and calmag can help R/O water remineralize to some extent. I aim for 1ml/liter (1 tsp/gal). I believe that is what Oshogreen recommended and possibly Jaykush according to another poster.

As Zen Master pointed out make sure it is blackstrap. I bought Grandma's from Walmart and turns out it is not blackstrap. Same amount of carbs but has much less potassium, calcium, magnesium etc but has 20mg sodium. Organic unlsulphured blackstrap is where its at. Wholesome Sweeteners and Plantation are brands that are easily available.

the local garden center cells 25lb bags of dried molasses for use on lawns. this would be good as long as its unsulphured, correct?

I am considering greatly lowering the amount of molasses I am using during the middle weeks of flowering and instead use some solid doses of Sweet from Botanicare during that period instead.

Use it all the way through until flush. Old growers ask me what my secret is for smell and taste. I am amazed more of THEM don't use it...cause it's not really a secret.

Oh...and I use 1 TABLEspoon to each gallon of water.

To be exact...black strapped, unsulphured molasses.

This is the stuff I use:

Tried Plantation...but the above stuff has more trace minerals. Don't like the spout as much. By the time it's empty...the bottle is a fucking mess.

I just got that same stuff Budsworth. Using it at 1ml/liter or a bit less. Amazing how dark it turns the water at such a low amount.

I use it through whole grow but more during flowering. Been doing it for years and it does increase tric/resin production and makes plants/buds smell better. Here's what I use as I get it free. :)

check the SODIUM on that bottle of brer,....

do you really want to be adding salt to your grow?

salt will replace magnesium, calcium, and potassium over time and it doesn't take much

I use 1 tsp per gallon/water of wholesome sweeteners brand organic molasses (same as the pic in the post above) you can find at whole foods (we nickname that store "Whole-Paycheck") 750mg of potassium per tablespoon, ZERO % sodium.

at $7.65 a quart it's the most reasonably priced liquid fertilizer I use. (it's also the ONLY liquid fert I use)

it's even fair trade certified.

now for BAKING, brer rabbit, and grandma's brand rule, simply because that "pinch of salt", really makes the flavors of cookies and breads come out.

but I personally wouldn't add 25mg of sodium per tablespoon to my garden.

now as for bottle mess, why don't people RINSE the top off after dispensing? then you don't end up with a gloppy sticky bug attracting mess,...................my bottle is nearly empty, and clean as the day I got it,.....hot water, 5 seconds, wipe dry, done.

i have used various carb products, and before they changed the formula I liked bud candy, although I think they changed it because the viscosity was too great for hydro. That said I don't like the new one

I have been playing with combinations of molasses, earth juice catalyst and carbo load. I like the carbload and black strap combination. I believe the carbo load has some additional amino acids (it seems like this is one of the backbones of ANs regimes) and the plants seem to really respond well

Once i can by trial or by reverse engineering, discover an organic alternative to those amino acids, I can see catalyst/blackstrap as being the micro heard feed of choice for me

25mg of sodium = 1% ... I use 1 Teaspoon per gallon. No trouble here bro. Did I mention I get it for free?! :) I grow organic with homemade compost .. i don't use chemicals ferts at all. Anyway thanks for the info .. I'll look into and see if I can find some of that of what you mentioned.

Great post. Iam using Wholesome Sweeteners brand as well.

I think molasses is my second favorite cultivation related smell, right after sticking my nose in a jar during the cure.

i've tried adding meridian blackstrap molasses (unsulphured) to my chemical nute res and after a day it had sludge n stuff floating about in it. The plant seemed to really suffer with bad nute lock out. Did i do something wrong? my res run to waste (kind of) had an airstone bubbling in there too.i added 1 tablespoon of molasses to a cup of warm water then added it to my res with 3 gallon of nute solution. Any ideas?

Psuper - Going with the blackstrap molasses is good choice. I don't know where you live but in my area that brand from the hydrostore is expensive, quality blackstrap can be had for 1/2 the price in the grocery store. If you haven't read the 3lbs artical that was linked earlier in the thread, I would suggest reading it. In addition RNDZL's post regarding added amino's is spot on. I've had good results with blackstrap fermented with kefir whey and a dash of Bragg's Liquid Amino's.

Scottyboycx - Can't pin down a cause for sure but I have found blackstrap molasses to be problematic in aerated reservoirs in general. Lowering the dose helps, 1Tbs/3 gals is about 5ml/gal or 1tsp/gal. I would start with 1/2tsp/gal and if that causes any issues I would abandon its use all together.

Molasses has soluble magnesium.... May wanna bag it in late flowering for super clean smoke.... I use it to feed the micro beasties in my organic teas which get fed to my girls daily along with their nutes. I use sweet during flowering, I've read the smells and flavors don't come across in the smoke but I have to call BS... They most definately do.... Using citrus currently.

:watchplant:

You are correct my good man. Who ever says Sweet does not effect taste and flavor does not use it properly.

I used Meridian molasses through flowering at 1 tablespoon, (15gms) per UK Gallon, I swapped from the treacle to a granulated version, still has 100% of everything but is so much simpler to measure and apply, you might find it helps your problem, it stays suspended and doesn't seem to react to certain nutrients as yours seems to have done?, what nutrients did you use at the time of the gunk?
Mr Diviner could be correct about the airstone, sorry missed that :bigeye:

I found Wholesome Sweeteners brand organic blackstrap at a local store for a good price. The 16oz was $6.00 but the 32 oz was only $8.59. At that price it is by far the cheapest blackstrap organic molasses I have seen. Using it at 1tsp/gal it would last me almost 2 years.

Plantation brand offers an organic blackstrap version but the organic one is not available anywhere I have found except online, The organic blackstrap has a lot more nutrients according to the labels.

I noticed someone said to cut the molasses during the flush because of magnesium. What is the consensus on that?

I'm running aero and a buddy of mine had problems running molasses in his system (clogged sprayers, rotting roots), what can I use as an alternative for my setup?
