Weed grows in NYC's Union Square Park

The locals don't think it is, but the Hightimes guy seemed pretty damn sure. After reading this all I could think of was the "Use of Seed Bombs" thread, and "Which one of you guys did it?" :)

Union Square May Need to Weed the Weed

Union Square is known for many things: the homeless, the homeless performers, the hippies, bohemians, college kids, skateboarders and more homeless people.

And it looks like one more funky thing can be added to that list: Marijuana.

Photos have surfaced on the Internet of what looks like marijuana growing in a garden in Union Square Park.

Witnesses emailed Gothamist to say there's one large sapling along with a few smaller sprouts of the smelly, fan-like plant. To confirm, the blog sent the photos to Senior Cultivation Editor at High Times magazine, Danny Danko, for his expert analysis.

He said "it absolutely is [weed]."

Danko says the plants growing in the public space can either be a protest from the marijuana community, or may have been grown from seeds that were discarded. But he doubts someone expected to harvest an actual marijuana crop.

The science team at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden also believe the plant is Cannabis Sativa, also known as pot, or weed, or marijuana.

But vegetable sellers in the popular Greenmarket in the park don't buy it. One told the blog that the sample he saw had seven leaves, and marijuana is known for being five-leaf plant. But female cannabis plants do often have seven leaves.

There are many plants that can be mistaken for marijuana. Experts say "Spider Legs" look like marijuana leaves, but eventually flower. Water Hemps, Cinquefoils, and Coral Plants also have the characteristic pointed tip leaflets and similar slender stalks seen in marijuana plants.

The Parks Department has not commented on the potential illicit crop, but Danko said they are usually quick about getting rid of those.

from the comments:

Uh, if the the picture depicts the plant in question, I suggest you back off the nitrogen, and give it shot of CalMag. (calcium and magnesium.

if only there was enough quality seeds to toss around and not care bout the price, i mean we could go ahead and toos some shitty bagseed and then were gonna fuck up the genetics, if i had 1000 good quality seeds i would toss at least 500 around in neighboring woods and hope they would pollinate and keep spreading....problem is i dont have that many seeds...maybe one day i will make a batch of seeds and do this ;)

The guy that planted those seeds is real grateful that high times has informed the world of his plot.
Could be natural growth from where someone cleaned their stash or tossed some roaches. Its just that easy outdoors people.

Weed Growing in Union Square

Weed Growing in Union Square

Ha this article is sooo funny! There is a clearly a weed plant growing in union square and the funniest thing someone said is, "“It’s not marijuana,” said one. “Marijuana is a five-leaf plant. This frond has seven leaves. It’s also way too big(HAAA LOL!). So you may think it’s marijuana, but it’s not.” After careful deliberation, we're gonna go with the High Times guy on this."

I used to do that all the time when I was a kid...Johnny Appleseed... I loved driving around town and seeing them growing. It was an inside joke seeing how long they would last before being spotted and ripped up...or taken home to smoke.

Those comments, lol.
How can so many people who have NO CLUE what their talking about post how they're sure it's not weed, like they're experts or something.

why does this come as such a shock to people, is what i dont get.
i mean HOW many million people go thru that park in any given year?
cmon....
theyre acting like someone left a pile of loaded hypodermic needles in the park.
obviously no one expected it to go to harvest.
get a grip!!

"Move along people. Nothing to see here. These arent the droids youre looking for."

why would you only throw "quality seeds" (lol) into the park to grow? its a stabilized line, no diversity. totally defeats the point of throwing seed into the wild to grow. i would throw bagseed everywhere i went, in fact i already do, and you should too. put some seeds in your pocket, randomly toss one here and there through your day whenever you are near dirt and weeds, city planters full of flowers, by the bushes in the park, neighbors lawns, etc. johnny MarySeed.
