Now that you have the tech down maybe you should make a new thread where you clearly state all the things you have learned in this thread and how exactly you do what you do in the first post or two this would save people TONS of reading and would be awesomely useful... I apologize in advance if this has been done and im to stoned to find it


I would look at blazeones tutorial that's stickied and do something like that

you're right, i need to do a principles, build, and operating manual.

i'm not quite ready yet as i'm still gaugeing the effect of some of the changes.

for example, at the beginning of this thread i was using a radial pruning technique and turning the plants every day. the first plant grown with one side facing was harvested yesterday. it looks like it yielded more. i won't know until it dries. then i'll have a series of them for a while and record yields before i make a final decision on the efficacy of the technique.

i'm changing to grow buckets that have been drilled to effect air pruning of the roots. one per week. i now have three in flower which means i have 6 weeks to harvest the first one of those. we will find out about those then. i won't know about the effect on yield till then. i can say now that the plants are larger overall at the same stage of growth and the main stems are bigger around. looks promising.

my wife says i will never be done trying to improve growing my favorite plant.

so, i'll start writing something condensed and concise soon.

i recognize that the length of some threads almost defeats the purpose of starting them. there is so much really valuable info buried in the middle of a lot of fluff that it's sometimes difficult to access.

This system is working so good I'm bored.

This system is totally scalable. Adaptable to almost any size grow. A small sog or scrog in a tent or closet. Noiseless sub-irrigation. Also would work great in a warehouse or greenhouse.

Whether you are a brand new grower or a seasoned commercial grower this system offers reliable, low maintenance growing.

Mistress, you make some good points. I prefer it to be in one thread, but I would like new people to have a fast track to run on.

I think I have found a viable compromise.

Maybe a “to date” index to the thread? Posted fresh when significant changes or ideas occur. Edited once in a while.

I read that thread you referred to all the time. The first page is set up well. I've actually made a few posts on it, but don't feel qualified to post much on that technique.

I have been curious about salt buildup in the medium. I have stated that I did not feel that it was occurring.

Today I took a root ball of a plant harvested three weeks ago that has mostly dried.

I cut it into three equal sections like a three layer cake.

Using the 1-1.5 rhp method of measuring salt content and ph of the medium, I took samples from all three sections.

Top, taken from the very top of the medium. 672 ppm @ 5.6

Middle, taken from bottom center of the middle section, representing the area normally associated with the soggy mass syndrome. 715 ppm @ 6.0 btw, this area was also full of fine white roots. No soggy mass.

Bottom, taken from the very bottom center of the root ball, the area right over the sub-irrigating and pwt draining sump. 574 ppm @ 6.0. no flush was done with this plant as ppms never went over about 900 during the grow. I'm not sure a flush is needed with continuous liquid feed if you feed a low dose. I think flushing was absolutely necessary for growing in containers of soil mixes as those would sometimes test extremely high after harvest. Ec 3-5.

this is after 16 weeks of growth and harvest. In coco.

this pretty much supports my theory that i'm getting a unique salt profile from the combination watering technique. And that salts are not accumulating significantly in the medium.

Salts accumulate in the bottom of an exclusively top watered container and in the top of a purely bottom watered container.

This also demonstrates that the sub-irrigation system is doing most of the work.

i forgot to mention that i have figured a dry weight per gallon method for mixing jack's without meters using their 130 oz's jacks and 80 oz's calcium nitrate per 1000 gal figures.

we know that 1/2 tsp each of jacks and calcium nitrate per gallon as recommended for quick mixing of small amounts comes out around 1000 ppm.

but, what if you want to duplicate the 846 ppm jacks commercial recommendation and don't have a meter? you can mix 3.7 grams jack's and 2.3 grams calcium nitrate dry weight per gallon and be very close. new growers are more likely to have a small gram scale than a ppm meter.

this is in ro water but if you are using tap water and it looks like it's not working out just drop the calcium nitrate by a few tenths at a time to compensate until your plants look good.

last piece of business.

i took ppm and ph readings on all 16 plant reservoirs and all were between 836 and 905 ppm and 5.4-6.0 ph.

just wanted to report last week's plant came in at 11.39 oz's. the biggest one yet in a ppk. this was my first plant grown throughout life with one side presented to the lights. it spent the first 4 weeks of veg on flora nova bloom but has been on jack's only since then.

this is just short of my all time record with this plant of 11.47 done in a 10 gal tub of turface.

the photo is my second one grown the same way. just whacked a few minutes ago. it looks just as heavy. report next week.

that's me in the photo, you can tell by the overall disheveled appearance and that freckle on my elbow.

c02? more veg tyme? bigger container? two/more light per plant? >plants?

seems that can be done consist., if that was target, once regime in place & replicable ea cycle...seems d9 in good position to try that bench-mark:), per viney...

Actually, that is dry weight. This is dry to the point of the largest bud stem snapping instead of bending.

All of my reported weight's are dried to this point.

The plant in the photo, which I won't have dry weight for until next week, weighed 5 lbs before trimming. That's stem, branches and buds. Very few fan leaves as it was defoliated 3 weeks before harvest. It looked heavy so I weighed myself on the digital bath scales with and without the plant. This is not something I normally do but the plant really looked heavy and I was curious.

What we are seeing here is a combination of effects kicking in simultaneously.

The growing with one side presented is obviously having a beneficial effect. The plants shape themselves to the lights. Square plants. More bud sites total and a more uniform bud size.

My new flower lighting arrangement hits all plants for weeks 2-9 with 2 1k lights and the first week they get 1k. We are getting into plants that have been under the influence of this longer and longer each week.

Also longer time each week on the jack's regime, which is producing very hard, dense nugs. And a beautiful gold color i've never seen before.

Longer time in flower for the sub-linking and pulse systems to have worked on each weeks plant.

The defoliating seems to be producing larger, more developed, inner buds.

I am encouraging the plants to cascade horizontally into the space between each set of lights. This finishes them in an extremely powerful close range light field. The plant you see me holding in the photo has a hard, crystalline feel to the buds. This is the first time i've observed this in 7 years of growing this same cut.

We still have 6 weeks to whack the first plant with air pruning of roots. They already look large for their ages.

I fully expect to be whacking 12 zips dry per plant per week by then.

I don't know if I can get to a pound with these genetics.

And that's it for light at this location. I have never worked with co2 before and won't be able to here either because of ventilation considerations.

I'm liking very much your lower stress farming. I'm looking to diy your setup when I take down the hydro and have some questions:

The 5 lb plant you harvested was from your original design, correct? Do you think the 10 gallon rubbermaids will hold up under this kind of weight?

Also with your "one-sided" growing are you "vscroging" them, pruning the limbs on the backside or just doing your initial prune and letting the lights draw the leaves?

first, let me say that the 5lb plant was just as you see it in the photo. Stems, branches, buds, and water, lots of water. Wet, wet, wet! I don't want anyone thinking i'm claiming a 5 lb yield.

Yes, that plant was still in my original build, which was designed for turface, a very heavy medium. But I think the rubbermaids will support a lighter substance like perlite or coco. Do you intend to use 5 gal grow containers? How many plants? What kind of lighting? How much space do you have? If you don't intend to grow trees you can get by with smaller containers, both res and grow.

i'm not pruning anything at all now since i've been playing around with defoliation. I'm leaving on all material that has a bud site, no matter where it occurs, knowing I will be defoliating and exposing them. I can't recommend this yet, but it looks good so far.

Here are shots of a couple of plants in flower. The room is very tight and the plants are huge so it's getting difficult to get a shot of a whole plant in there. One is ending the first week and the other is ending week 3 and is about to be defoliated. The tape measure is on the top of the medium and the plant is 44” wide. It is also the first plant with the air pruning holes.

Please get back to me on your specs. I have a keen interest at this point in seeing some new growers try this. For me that is the ultimate test. If someone relatively new can easily build and operate one of these I will feel like I have accomplished something.

prefer turn every 2 wks or so...4-5 total turns per...both work

they really prefer 2k per plant (two sides)... middle of garden seem best, w/ vert bulbs...

water soluble gr##nhous grade dissolve far better than gh maxi series, which may still be un-dissolved matter in bottom of bucket, if dont mix well... found a 5-1#-2# type fert. not jax, but similar. there is also 4-18-38...

thinning train pruning seem always effective...
though, last imaginary cycle, didnt turn plants, didnt prune & only stake when fall over... harvest three tymes. 60-65-70... in layers. maybe 70 day layer of fruit could benefit from beter thin in begin:2cents: thinning also apply to fan leaf, that lose efficiency as age, anyway...

w/ lots air flow, they can get ~3-6" away, for 3-7 days, then like to turn slightly...

they should be larger in same syze container & more fruit...vs. non drill containers. oxygen in root zone seem keep functions proceeding well, over-all:2cents:

there some cultivar only get 45cm wide, even after 10wk veg... other get much larger. some seem have no limits, except room & light...
