Difference between HPS bulbs....

How big of a difference is there between a very expensive hps bulb (400w) and the cheap ones I buy from 1000bulbs.com?

The hortilux eye and the super hps ect are SOOO much more expensive....I'm just curious if there is actually a huge difference between them and the cheapies and if so what are they.

Like...has anyone done a side by side and shown huge improvement in yields ect.

I would also like to know.. as long as the lumens are at same level, in my opinion it should be the same tho

I've never done side-by-side grows to test lamps, but I do measure all the lamps I can get my hands on. Solely in terms of lumen output, there's no advantage to agro lamps that I've seen. As you're asking about 400HPS, Sylvanias have had the most consistent output and performance. Plantmax lamps have an even higher output, but I can't vouch for their reliability. Haven't been using them long enough. Sylvanias last seemingly forever. GE and Philips 400 lamps are similar, output-wise, albeit slightly lower than Sylvania lamps and are also very reliable. HTH

normal HPS vs EYE (EYE has a more balanced blue spectrum added and bout 5000-10,000) more lumens then a standard HPS bulb

i.e 50,000 lumens for ge bulb standard 400w
a (eye) bulb 55,000 lumens plus added blue spectrum

FWIW, I bought and tested a brand new Eye 600HPS lamp. Lumen-wise, the Hortilux 600HPS lamp measured lower than a non-agro GE, as an example, and significantly lower than a Grolux. I can look for my notes, but I recall 10-15% respectively.

EYE hortilux is higher in par watts and thats whats important lumens are what we see,par watts are what the plant sees.I use standard metal halides to veg a plant but I wont flower them under HPS underground garage lamps you can bet that.So I say yes it is important in flower to use a horticultural lamp.not so much in veg

I have done a side by side grow my vertical room with 2 cheapo 1000'2 vs the same room with two eye bulbs. The eye bulbs actually resulted in an additional 8% yield. All variables were identical (same strain, same size clones, same mother, same nutrient mix, same sealed room environment, same CO2, nothing but the bulbs changed)

Take from it what you want, I have since started only using eye hortilux, bulbs.

I use one bulb for one harvest. I am now on the hunt to crest the 2.0 grams per watt so new bulbs are a must.

dont waste money on the hps grow bulb scam with there 300 percent mark ups, total b.s

and the enhanced spectrum bulbs give u max output in green, second in yellow,,,,u get my point.

by a the 2000k el cheapo bulbs and put a few blue clfs in , there u just saved over 89 dollars.

i think its funny theres enhanced hps bulbs that put out there peak lumesn in green and there supposed to be specialty light.

It may be more helpful if folks mentioned specific lamps by name/brand/type, rather than just calling them el-cheapos. Same with agro lamps. To me, an el-cheapo is an off-brand Chinese lamp. Relatively inexpensive lamps from GE, Sylvania, and Philips don't fit that mold, so we need to define what it is that we're talking about.
