yeild question

I am about to try my first grow, indoors in soil. I was wondering how much yeild to expect from a 1200w light and how much room it should cover. Would 2 x 1200w cover a 12 x 12 foot room or would I need 3 of them?

Well, the largest light I've used is a 1000W, which covers approximately 64 square feet. A 12' x 12' room is 144 square feet so two would do the job, but more flowering light, the better the yield. ;) Good luck!

Uhh, hold up. You want at least 50-60 watts per square foot. A 1K covers a 4X4 area well, which is 16 square feet. A 1200w setup should cover a 3X6 area, not much more.

After doing the math with the square footage you provided, I've decided to go with four 1000ws, that should cover 64 square feet. How many plants would be ideal for that size? I know every strain grows differently, I just need somewhere to start.

Sorry I was reading out of the book again "Marijuana New School" and they quote 64 square feet (or an 8' x 8' space) for each 1000W. I know this is very high, and do not agree from personal experience when I used 1K HPS's I could cover about 25 square feet (4' x 5') using a 30" reflector.

With 3: 1200W setups I think you'll have great success in a 12' x 12' room, and still have some space to move around or store equipment. As far as plant numbers, would say something along the lines of 54 - 216 plants. All depends on time in vegetative cycle. Two weeks, a month, etc. How long do you plan to veg for? Are you starting from seed? Clones? How many?

Let us know this information and we can further help you!

Good luck.

So if I went with three 1200s about how many plants could I fit under them?

That would totally depend on the size of container that you plan on using. Do you know what size container you want to use? How big of plants do you want to grow? As for yield, there's even more variables that need to be considered first. IC has a wealth of information if you only look for it. Start reading up and come back with some more specifics and people might be able to give you some more detailed answers. Sorry to not be of more help. :tiphat:

Where are you getting these 1200 watt lights from? Are you calling a pair of 600's a 1200?

I'm sure they exist but I've never seen one specifically for horticulture use. Have you considered using 600's or a 1000watter?

I could be totally in the dark on this though.

A friend of mine has some 1200s, but after looking around I decided it would be too hard to get replacement parts if it ever broke, so I'm going to go with the more common 1000s.

I'm going to make soil beds for the plants, and I think the room is actually 10'x10'. What size and how deep should I make them? I was thinking thinking 8'x8' but I'm really not sure how high to make them.

It depends on whether you're limited by space or wattage. If space, 1000W in a 4x4 is great, but if you have the space you'll get more yield out of a 5x5. 16 sq ft vs 25... its a big difference.

I use two 400w under 2.5 x 5 so about 12.5' squared and 64w/ft squared. I only grow 4 plants in that space with a 1-2 lb yield. I agree with Milehigh, the narrower and longer way is better. This is a very big room so if you wanted to achieve the same w/ft2 as me you would need 9216 watts. That doesn't seem very feasible unless you have lots of money to spend for the electricity. Even the 4000w * 12 hr light * 30 days is 1440kw per mo. and you still don't have the wattage to grow in that space. What I think is use 400w. I know it seems counterproductive but it isn't. Then you could have 10 separate lights which will give you better light penetration(no fluffy popcorn nugs) and you can cover about 2.5 ft squared with each one. This would also make it so the lights are very close instead of farther away like they would be using the 1000w bulbs. You could even go with 16 400w bulbs to get the exact right number but I think you should have enough ambient light to for less than the 10000w it normally would take. Another thing you could do is a vertical grow which would fill the space nicely with plants which would mean the 4000w could go in the middle. The radius of the circle would be 4-6 ft and no light would be wasted.

This is two 1kw lights in the same size room grown in soil (9 plants).

I think that's why people recommend containers instead of boxes inside, the drainage. How the hell do you flush an indoor box? I imagine water pumps would have to be involved, sounds messy.
