Something Nice Happened...

I was driving from one job site to another and i had to take a call...

so i pull over under a bridge to stop in the shade so i could speak on the phone and write down some notes...

not 2 minutes goes by and a Dept. Of Transportation worker knocks on my passenger side window:tiphat:...i roll the window down and say "hi"...the nice guy asks if i need assistance and if i'm ok...

i am shocked!! i respond that all is well, i just wanted to stop for an important call and to write some stuff down...i look in my rear view mirror to see he has arrived with all the lights flashing and has made the shoulder behind me very safe. (in case he needed to work on my car, i guess).

i was not in my home state, where the norm is to blow past the stranded motorists or scrape them off the road after a disaster occurs...

so i would like to say: "Thanks" to that kind stranger who actually stopped to see if i needed anything.

thank you kind sir...keep up the good work that you do.:thank you:

how about you, anything nice happen to you lately?

Yup. Short on the funds to get our 5 dogs their heartworm meds. Another Rescue freind sold some of her crafts she makes and sent me a check for 160.00 to help pay for it. And her name is Angel. I cried because she is so kind. What a nice thread,Sleepy!

While that's nice (kindness from strangers is hard to come by these days)... I always view that from a different angle.

The last thing I want while parked on the shoulder is for someone to stop and ask/poke around. I doubt a gov. employee is going to say "Oh Hi, lemme help you unload those seedlings... Need help hauling that soil back there?" I'm always paranoid as fuck when I stop, am in the process of getting out of my car, and see a truck or two drive by.

good drown

i just saw a turtle crossing the street on a busy 40mph road. there was no place to pull over, so i put my car in the middle of the road, in half of eat lane, stopped, put on my hazard lights, ran out and grabbed it, then ran about 400 yards to the lake he was trying to get to. the road had curbs so even if it would have made it across the street without being hit, it could not have made it up the curb. poor lil guy

That's great!...Yup, they do this routinely on the 5 in SoCal as well, although it's usually the CHP instead of Caltrans...

They figured out that many more accidents and fatalities are caused by idiots on the freeway shoulder trying to change their tires than anything else. Even though it takes them a while to clear an accident out here, they'll usually pull up and offer assistance within 20 minutes of anybody stuck roadside.

In Chicago, they'd just be like get the fuck out the road and quick, bitch. They'd say that through their horn, w/out gettin out of their car and then take off quick with their lights on... lol

Something nice...Lessee...my buddy at work stepped up yesterday and came up with a fabulous on the spot fabrication of why I was not at a mandatory meeting-- He got me completely off the hook. I had spaced it, but he stepped on up. Best part was, he didn't even tell me/didn't even expect a Thank You, I heard that he did this through someone else. Right on brother Ron, I got your back too!

stopped for gas after work. Had a spliff rolled up for the drive home. When I got back on my way, it was nowhere to be found. Searched around my driver's seat a little more after I got back to my place. It was under my seat in a weird spot.
Didn't get to smoke, but was happy not to have lost it.

That, and someone telling me there was some strawberry smelling herb around and tocome take a look.... :joint:

Last two times I had automotive trouble, I was helped in minutes, first time by a state bull, took me to where I could arrange a tow, and we had a nice chat. Xmas day I spun out and got stuck in the snow and mud, by the time I got back up to the road, a car had stopped and took me out of their way to my Dad's house, and we also had a nice chat. And I have paid both forward, but that is a different story.

I smoked someone out for their fist time ever and they had a great experience because it was some fruity frosty & chill tooth. ;)

I had a flat on the interstate. I was wearing a business suit so I took off my jacket, tie, and shirt cause i knew I was going to get filthy. A state truck pulls up and the guy changes my tire for me.

back in the old days (mid 70's) I was running a '72 El Camino and I always carried spare belts & hoses for it along with tools to fix whatever I needed (of my own) while on the road; mostly driving up & down/to & from NYC & the Catskill Mountains almost every weekend.

I must've stopped and fixed 8-10 different strangers cars over the yrs along the NY state thruway by adjusting out their alternator's or a/c pumps to fit the belts I carried for my 350 GM plant, the spare hoses I carried were the corrugated flex universal type and so it was easy to fix a bunch of folks up.

I always charged them the $5.00 to replace the belt or hose which saved them an easy $80-100 from the notorious NYS Hiway services prices. more than once I'd left them with tears of joy & relief in their eyes perhaps the difference of their weekend vacation ruined by (or saved from) time & budget issues of a breakdown.

**my most generous roadside assist was in July of '76 when 3 stranded friends found themselves with a dead car (nothing I could do got it going) in the pouring rain on the Major Deegan Thruway. they lived 130 miles from where I found them (in front of Yankee Stadium) & the chick (about 16/17yrs old) needed to be home by sun up as I could hear her dad screaming at her into the phone I drove them to.

they'd gotten ripped off trying to buy scalped tickets to a Foreigner concert and spent the night bumming instead of partying; the pity in my heart broke me down & I offered to drive them home to Middletown NY, w/out a ride home they'd have been fussing and bitching amongst themselves; these kids needed the lucky break I was offering them. the owner of the car (Roman) would ride back w/me so he could get it repaired later in the day.

Over the years Roman kept in touch w/me and bought me several suppers & drinks in gratitude of my time & efforts that night/day.
