2 Types of Carbon???

hey guys.ive been growing for bout 4 yrs.so after mad research i made a carbon filter for my setup using sugarbears method. i bought the carbon from petco in the aquarium section. ok sounds good. when i testd the unit however, things didnt go so well. i sprayed body spray in the lower portion of box, and literally stuck my nose by the fan in the carbon and smelled the body spray. my box is sealed (double checked) then i noticed something...THER ARE OTHER TYPES OF CARBON. thats right - liquid phase carbon, and vapor (air) phase carbon.

My issue is,(sorry for rambling) for as long as ive been a member here, everyone says "carbon is carbon and it doesnt matter ,go get it from the aquarium section. " but wouldnt vapor phase carbon be optimal for this application?? is everyone exxagerating the success of liquid-phase carbon? if so, where would i get air phased carbon from?

thank you i love you all. heres a link that may clear things up a bit : http://www.calgoncarbon.com/carbon_products/index.html

You want carbon for ODOR CONTROL or AIR POLLUTION. It looks like little pellets and NOT like little pieces of coffee grounds (which is what the pet store has.)

Fans can actually push through this type of carbon, whereas the pet store stuff will kill most of your CFM.

When testing, don't spray directly into the carbon, instead spray in the room or light incense.

Thanks for the tip!

For those who are curious after a bit of googling I found this stuff: http://www.buyactivatedcharcoal.com/product/GAC48C-AW
It's supposed to be pretty great for air filters and at $25/5lbs that's fairly inexpensive too!

Also: don't get the 8lb bag, look at the numbers, it costs $.48 more per lb. than the 5lb one. If you're going over 20lbs (3/5 cu. ft of carbon!) then the bulk savings start kicking in.

Granules are more effective for scrubbing than pellets due to their greater surface area. Carbon adsorbs like fly paper. The more surface area, the more contaminates it grabs. Pellets can't hold as much and, because of their regular surfaces make it easier for dirty air to pass through unscrubbed as the air doesn't have to fight it's way out.

thanks for the respnse guys. sry for the confusion, i have 2 stcked rubbermaids and i sprayed into the bottom one. i smelled the spray through the filter which exhausts at the top of the top rubbermaid. i actually have a mix of pelletized and granular becuase i didnt kno which one.
