I saw Metallica at this same bar when they were doing Ride the Lightning. Kirk was still alive then. Man I'm getting old.

Kirk is still alive, but i think you meant Cliff Burton (RIP 1986)

I liked Dio in his Rainbow days.

I saw him with Black Sabbath in Sydney in about 1981? One of the best shows I've seen. Supported by Rose Tattoo (RIP Pete wells too). I no longer listen to that kind of music but thanks for the memories. RIP.

was never quite as good as ozzy was in his hay day
I completely disagree. Light years better than Ozzy.

Food for thought......

This is what this man was doing 34 years ago....

34 years ago.....(And, to anyone who is a fan but not familiar, vocally, one of the greatest works of his career.....almost the entire 8 minutes are his.........would have put a live version, but, none do it true justice.......)

Ozzy comparison interesting.....but I think equally as interesting how he himself (RJD) changed the entire band/sound/music (Sabbath)....(They became a totally different band/style...)

This was the time I first started listening to him. To be fair the band was the brainchild of Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple guitarist). Dio might have done the vocals but this was very much Ritchies band and had other vocalists after Dio left. There's a double live album which is very good too.

Thanks for posting.:tiphat:

I'm a huge Rainbow fan. Huge Ritchie fan. Many links above. But.....but......without Ronnie?....who knows......and, other vocalists after?...yeah, I'm well aware....because all their renditions quite poor.....

I wouldn't exactly say his "brainchild", as, well......Ronnie wrote it (lyrics) all basically.....and sang it all..... I'm a player, so.....That being said......Ronnie made Rainbow, the Rainbow we know....(I have zero interest in any other vocalist doing the same material....at all...in the least......zero..., and, had a different vocalist been in?,well,as such....different lyrics, which equals a different song(s).....(Different sets of lyrics inspire different musical thoughts, etc....as does a voice, etc.....) Ritchie in the category of brilliant composer when surrounded by other brilliant artists, but, quite boring the majority of the time....

One need only look at post Dio material....(especially Bonnet)......"Since you've been gone" ain't no "Stargazer" :smoke:

(I think good analogy would be would Maiden even come close to who and what they are today without Bruce, but not quite the perfect analogy as Steve Harris a writer also, so....)

That being said,I think Ritchies most recent and current work speaks for itself.... (And the broken hearted guy above should note what love can do to a man :biglaugh:......ie: The singer is his wife. Not sure who's idea to start a traveling minstrel band and wear tights, but, somehow, I doubt was his idea :biglaugh:.....) I'd love to think there were other job offers......:smoke:

Hey I don't want to get too far off topic as this is a Dio thread but have a couple of things to say. The band was called Ritchie Blackmores Rainbow originally, hence I think I'm justified in calling it blackmores brainchild. The writing is credited as Blackmore/Dio. Blackmore the music, Dio the lyrics I'm guessing. I also disagree about Blackmore's music being boring. Listen to his influence on Purple. Rainbow did a great version of Mistreated too. I also happened to like a lot of the Rainbow with Graham Bonnet so each to his own. I also grew out of liking the sort of music Dio went on to do.

He certainly had a huge influence on Black Sabbath. Heaven and Hell is a truly brilliant album.

Fair enough. I consider Dio one of most underrated. Ritchie just seems to live up well to most overrated.:smoke:

Never said music boring. Said brilliant composer when working with others who are such, but, guess he just got tired of being brilliant. :smoke: (When he had stage all to himself was when quite boring....drunk or otherwise.....)

I stand by above though....and certain early Rainbow would never have come to be what i became with another...(certain), much less Bonnet, Joe Lynn Turner and such.

The impact of a specific vocalist/writer cannot even be begun to be explained.....and makes things possible which wouldn't be otherwise.....(I know this aspect...well.....different sets of lyrics in themselves and voices create different ideas......hard to explain......)

"Im coming home"
MY eyes are bleeding

RIP Ronnie... Neon Knights blasting out of my speakers just for you. I sure hope you hear that brother!

Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell is still one of the defining metal recordings. He will be missed.

Without him, it wouldn't have existed :smoke:....

Among the best work of a career spanning 50+/- years....

Any creative force with that degree of input shapes a project in ways many can't imagine...

Without him, early Rainbow would not have been what it was....those albums and songs would never have existed......(I'm certain others in their place, of course....but since those albums and songs some of the most significant in rock history....well....(later work wasn't....:smoke:)

One can also look at post Ozzy Sabbath for examples of change, and how the addition of another, a different creative force, changed each members input and performance....

Such is the value and importance of specific members in collaboration of anything....and all good examples of how the mere input of one, can alter the output and performance of all...

Ronnie was just an amazing singer.

I have so many memories of driving through the desert to Arizona from Cali with the top down and Gypsy blaring over and over again, high off our asses.

Dio will forever be in top 5 bands for life. Holy Diver is timeless.

He put on some bad ass concerts. Saw him at the Mesa Amphitheater and at Compton Terrace in AZ back in the 80s. He slew the dragon with a lazer/neon? sword through the dragon's lazer heart.
Seriously good rock shows.
He'd been around for quite a while then too. Even before Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow he was with Blackmore in ELF. He was rocking for a long time.
you know, Rainbow rocked. Watching the Rainbow vids, you're struck by Dio's strong voice, and backed up with Ritchie's guitar, perfect formula for good rock and roll.

Black Sabbath was not Rainbow.

Ronnie was in Rainbow. Ozzy was in black sabbath.

Then Ozzy left black sabbath... enter Ronnie.

RIP Ronnie.

???? Thats kinda confusing,

Ronnie James Dio (July 10, 1942 – May 16, 2010) was an American heavy metal vocalist and songwriter. He performed with, amongst others, Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, and his own band Dio. Other musical projects include the collective fundraiser Hear 'n Aid. He was widely hailed as one of the most powerful singers in heavy metal,[1] renowned for his consistently powerful voice and for popularizing the "devil's horns" hand gesture in metal culture. Prior to his death, he was collaborating on a project with former Black Sabbath bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice, under the moniker Heaven & Hell, whose first studio album, The Devil You Know, was released on April 28, 2009.[2] Dio died of stomach cancer on May 16, 2010.[3][4]

Chiming in for a moment... Blackmore did continue after Dio left and produced some very solid contributions such as Straight Between the Eyes (The title allegedly came from a phrase from Jeff Beck, describing Jimi Hendrix to Blackmore) which featured Stone Cold, Jealous Lover and Power among others... by the way the vocals were handled by a gent named Joe Lynn Turner who also did vocals on Rainbow's Difficult to Cure, interestingly enough the cover design had previously been put forward as a cover for Black Sabbath's 1978 album, Never Say Die). thanks :D
